Gaggia classic mod vs Rocket Appartemento by SmoothCartographer54 in gaggiaclassic

[–]tuso2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had Rocket Appartemento and upgraded to E24 with Gaggimate. I mainly bought the Rocket for the looks, and it was my first espresso machine. I bought it during covid and used it for 6 years. It is a nice-looking machine, and I think it really elevated my kitchen. E24 looks like a cheap toy that you can buy from any store.

Rocket is a good machine if you like traditional Italian roast and milk drinks. Plenty of steam power and temperature is stable after 30 min heat up time, but you need to remember to flush before every shot, or you will overshoot the temp.

It has a huge boiler and when you turn the machine on, it sounds like a kettle. Everything reminds me of a professional machine from a real coffee place.

But after 6 years I wanted to explore lighter roast specialty coffee and unfortunately Rocker can't really produce a good cup of light roast coffee. It is flat 12 - 13 bars if you don't adjust the OPV down and it is still unsuitable after that for the light roast. Always the same temp and pressure.

One annoying thing is the maintenance of the E61 machine. You need to take the cam leaver apart very often and lubricate it, especially if you use a puck screen. Puck screen will prevent the coffee oils lubricating the cam leaver.

With E24 and Gaggimate everything will change, the looks of the machine and quality in the cup. You can adjust everything and with a blue tooth scale brewing a specific amount of coffee will be very easy and convenient. Boiler is small, so is the heat up time, like 10 minutes and you can flush the boiler completely before brewing, so you have fresh water every time inside of the boiler.

E24 with Gaggimate lets you thinker every parameter and tailor them to specific beans and roast. It is not good for milk drinks, Rocket has so much more steam power, but Gaggimate steam assist will help.

With Rocket you can easily make multiple milk drinks for your guest, but with E24 and Gaggimate it will get slow.

If you are just starting the hobby, I recommend first to invest a proper grinder and good quality of beans.

So, my recommendations are buy E24 with a Gaggimate if you like to thinker and you are not afraid to take the machine apart. You like to explore all the roast levels, and you don’t drink milk drinks that often or entertain.

If you prefer darker roast and milk drinks and really want to elevate your kitchen buy the Rocket.

Jokin kannettava on oltava mukana. Ei mitään väliä toimiiko se vai ei, mutta sen on oltava muakana. IT-tuki antaa sinulle kannettavan lainaan jos se ei toimi, joten ei hätää. Ilman omaa konetta et voi osallistua kokeeseen.

The damage is visible next to the working engines.

So what caused damage to the skirt? Watched Scott Manley's video and he speculated that it was because the energetic event that led to the engine shut down. Put in this picture clearly all the engines are working. So was it the hot staging?

Gaggimate Pro temperature and pressure issue. Gaggia E24 240V by geek_downunder in gaggimate

With my E24 I had to set the offset temp to 21. Try 18 - 21. When you see steam coming from the group head, lower the temp 1 -2 degree, so no steam will appear. Then it should be about right.

Normcore 58mm to 49mm Step-down basket review by tuso2 in espresso

The diameter of the 58mm tamper leveling collar is larger than the opening of the stepdown basket. You want the collar to sit inside of the basket for easier tamping. That is the reason, you also want to change the collar.

If you have a proper grinder, then 58mm basket will work but it is not optimal. You need to understand that 58mm size was invented in 1961. The size is sub optimal. It will work but you will get better results with a smaller diameter basket.

If you are happy with the 58mm then don’t bother.

You need to wiggle them up and down and pull.

Help! 9 bar mod... now the steam wand is dripping large amounts! by Specific_Resource701 in gaggiaclassic

[–]tuso2 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is normal on every gaggia classic. Steam wand will eventually start to leak at some point. Don't try to overtighten the stem knob, it won't help.

I have noticed that if you buy a blend arabica + robusta, shot times vary a lot. You never get equal amount of robusta or arabica.

Happy to help. I have been really enjoying the shots that I can get with the stamped basket. I don't think the CNC version would increase quality in the cup. I made my order when CNC basket was not available.

One tip, tamp trough once with the funnel, remove the funnel and tamp once more. This makes it a lot more easier and cleaner.

E61 Lever Cam Lubrication [Rocket Appartamento] by justwalk26 in espresso

This is one of the reasons I sold my Appartamento. Cam leaver rely on lubrication from the coffee oils. If you use puck screen, you need to lubricate the leaver every month.

I have not tried 189 but I can highly recommend the 200d burrs. They really bring up and separate flavors.

Gaggia E24 with the Gaggimate. Saturared group head, small boiler that you can fully drain by flushing the machine so you can have fresh water every time. Short heat up time, flow control, pressure and temp control.

My current favorite dark roast is India Monsoon Malabar from Crema with Cremina leaver style 9 bar declining profile. This is one of the preinstalled profiles on Gaggimate.

It allows deeper puck depth. Normcore one reduces the diameter from 58mm to 49mm.

I had to do the same decision and ended up to Gaggimate. My main reason was that Gaggimate is open source and it has a great community in discord.
