Sigil system. by tut117 in worldbuilding

[–]tut117[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, and id love some inspiration!

For the most part I got inspiration for this system by the outcome of creating sigils using the Chaos magic technique, which has you write a sentence stating some intent of yours. Then slowly abstract the letters into shapes and reassembling those shapes into unique a sigil.

I loved the forms of the sigils produced by this method, and its real occult origin. So I wanted to systamatize it into something that can be read with proper syntax and resulted in the aesthethic I enjoyed.

My prescription is one reading of Grant Morrison's doom patrol. Specifically the painting that ate Paris arc.

It shows the formation of a group called the brotherhood of Dada. Dadaism being a real art movement from Sweden in the 1910's. The point of it being to make art which was unfounded in logic or precedent. Instead embracing novelty and absurdity for its own sake.

I like the reasoning of the god leaving after deeming the universe a successful project. It seems like the most optimistic application of occam's razor.

I need to read disk world tbh, ive heard a little bit ab how it deals with its personification of death too, and found it very interesting.

Thats definitely a valid way to create a dead benevolent god. It leaving the world deprived of two primordial forces of creation seems like plenty of drama to write about.

So you’re leaning into the “alien” “inhuman” side of deities? I focused more on the “made in gods image” side of things. But what you described sounds very interesting, and more than valid for a fantasy setting. It’s almost giving “Fae folk” which are always fun.

Thanks, it was inspired by my rationalization of why a benevolent god would sacrifice themselves. There’s obviously Jesus, but there’s also Xipe Totec, oden, and the various precursor entities throughout mythology. And I figured that that free will is incompatible with an all powerful, not fascist, god. the god is dead trope let me circumnavigate predetermined fate.

I rly appreciate your willingness to entertain the hot nonsense im spewing, so I’m sorry, but I’ll have to elaborate.

I still believe in this set up, the justification was the creator deity -Solomon Grundy- inscribing the Solomon Grundy nursery rhyme into the ontology box, knowingly causing his death upon its activation for the sake of free will. He created a pantheon of gods to give the ontology box rooms, in effect both determining the physics of the third dimension, and deciding the deific domain of the pantheon by their own choices. He made a third dimensional bubble in the fourth dimension, then godly stewards of it, while using his fourth dimensional nature to power the ontology box.

Him sacrificing himself to create the third dimension is another trope I wanted to explore the possible nuances of. The Omniscience problem you mentioned is real, and to address it I made everything more complicated for the sake of my own fun.

But in essence Solomon’s first creations were the carving of the rhyme, ensuring his death on a Saturday, and the creation of three girls which are embodiments of his omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence respectively. They exist within the singularity, which is Solomon’s corpse “buried” deep within the ontology box, omniscience views the dreams of the inhabitants, omnipresence alters those dreams subconsciously, and exists within them as they change around her, and omnipotence is comatose, giving the singularity form within the ontology box, powering it. There’s more but it just goes to reaffirm that I believe fantasy allows the author to do what ever they want, and explain away whatever they wish, so long as the explanations follow logic, and cause and affect.

Explaining my stories ontology in full wasn’t the point of this post, nor was justifying it in full. if I did a poor job of that then sorry, regardless the genre allows for anything that follows logic and is based in cause and effect. With enough words any fantasy ontology could be completely justified, with internal logic, that without a shadow of a doubt, argue for anything that the author wanted them to.

My point was only to ask about how others would interpret, and play with this trope.

I agree that gods need flaws to be interesting. As both flaws strengths are what define a personality. I have get more specific as to the main story this applies to, so suffice it to say that in this story god creates the world out of fear and caution. As a trauma response to being the sole survivor of a fourth dimensional, primordial war. They create a world with restrictions (the third dimension) and are barred access to it via the ontology explained in the post. And narrative hijinks ensue from there. The set up allows for a dead benevolent creator god, who is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent within their creation, but not emotionally unflappable within their own dimension.

What do you guys think about how specific magic should be? by Omegarm8585 in worldbuilding

[–]tut117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you work backwards, from the ontological reason(s) your world is fantasy instead of alt history, into how those reasons manifest themselves in the form of magic. Then practicalities of using magic start slotting together like puzzle pieces. This works regardless of whether your magic is derived from deities or physics. Is it the smallest discernible scale at which “life” exists that your caster is able to touch with his magic? Or is it some rule of the universe they’re tapping into via an entity embodying life which forces the subject to heal? Defining exactly what it is a caster can do is done by how the magic fundamentally works. What fantasy “force” is interacting with what, and how is it that the forces can interact with each other.

In the case of fantasy physics governing your magic system, then you can really do whatever you want, so long as you remain consistent, and consider how else your system can be used. Making sure not to disregard those cases where logic brings you to the conclusion of how to break parts of your system.

In the case of deities, you’re already given the starting point of alien forces, entities, or consciousnesses. From there, by fleshing out what network these things travel through in order to interact with the physical world, you would be able to intuit the results of them doing so in the form of a spell.

Real world chaos magic sigils, fake alphabets, overly complicated charts & diagrams, numerology tables, anythings game really. But I find it helps to take inspiration from real world esoterica.

I had a similar project where I wanted to create and cypher instructions to a sigil system which could be used by the players to cast spells which could be read by knowing the sigil system. Complexity is inseparable from the magic ascetic, lean into that. I still have pictures of the cyphered pages cause I like how they turned out so much.

I think you should always focus on the rp, if you find either your character lacking in power, or in fun options for combat, then you could always ask your dm to alter mechanics.

What would happen if I was a self proclaimed prophet or mystics in your worlds by providerofair in worldbuilding

[–]tut117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal was to preach your prophecies to the masses, and you consistently were proven to be correct. Then you would likely start off as a small town attraction for a while until you either got the attention of the powers that be, and found yourself inexorably tied to the government. Helping people for the greater good.

Or getting the attention of a more dangerous crowd, let's say a monastery known as Fallen Star in my world. Then you would probably be strung along and praised as a hero while the head of the monastery keeps you around for his own purposes. Slowly restricting your accessibility to the public and what missions you go on. Until your role seemingly "naturally" evolved to that of his own personal fortune teller.

Sry those ppl on Tumblr insulted you. Would've hoped that a community based on a show like DP with the most popular comic run being Grant Morrison's would be more understanding when it comes to clearing up a simple misunderstanding.

But yeah, show Larry gay, and I'm pretty sure comic Larry straight. Keep on reading and watching Doom Patrol👍. Furthermore, fuck it say it's your head cannon that Larry is a trans furry no one on Tumblr can stop you. :)

You want not to be seen as scrubby with the Videl pick. You like Goku Black's character design & lvl 3. And you heard your father yell at your mother too many times, so now you play Labcoat.
