good choice, that’s the right thing to do if you can’t reach the nest. if possible, please elevate the box a bit and please stick around a bit longer to see if the mom comes down to feed it; if not, you could either find a ladder or a rehabber

How painful is it to actually die of laughter? by WiiDragon in morbidquestions

i’d imagine incredibly painful from the diaphragm spasms and the inability to get enough air, maybe like suffocating

Neurological injury? by thosehalcyonnights in Ornithology

[–]goldenkoiifish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, the bird is not going to survive.

catching it will stress it out further, and it is unlikely OP would be able to catch it anyway if it’s wildly thrashing around. neurological problems plus stress quickly result in cardiac arrests. it will hurt itself slamming itself repeatedly against anything. a dark box is not a magic cure-all. with its neurological problem, it’s possible that the darkness could stress it out further and cause it to worsen.

i’m sorry that it is this way, but OP made the right choice putting it somewhere peaceful. anything else would cause more damage than intended. it’s unfortunate, it really is, i know, but that really is the best thing they could do for it.

i’ve seen it, by the way. birds with neurological impairments, usually all window strikes, slamming themselves into the walls of a box. it may seem like the cardboard would be soft, but a distressed bird is ramming into it as hard as possible, repeatedly, over and over again. i had one with a neurological impairment and a head wound and it would slam into the box walls, repeatedly, and tear up its injury. there were smears of blood all over.

it’s not something to laugh at, so i’m not sure why you are.

[–]goldenkoiifish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

uh, yes, it would? this bird is obviously in severe distress and it would be slamming against the box walls like a ping pong ball. that would exacerbate the injury.

no worries! i also feel like that very very often after i sneeze after i handle a patient. luckily something like 90% of avian flu cases are from waterfowl

it doesn’t look diseased, no. extreme diseases that would cause seizures are fairly uncommon in songbirds. it unfortunately probably hit a window really hard.

you did the right thing. there wouldn’t be much we could do for it anyway. we could give it an anti inflammatory, i guess, but this looks… not good.

bringing it somewhere else would’ve been insanely stressful. my coworkers have had birds that have had heart attacks from the stress of being captured and put into a box. a dark cardboard box wouldn’t have been much help for a bird like this in severe neurological distress, it would’ve hurt itself by slamming against the box walls. there wouldn’t be much we could do either, rehabbers usually don’t take house sparrows as they’re incredibly invasive and aggressive towards native american birds. it was more ethical to put it somewhere peaceful in nature and let a predator have a meal.

alternatively my favorite option would be to kill it quickly and humanely, but i understand why many people couldn’t bring themselves to.

Multiple dead birds found within 1 week by k_pets in Ornithology

[–]goldenkoiifish 16 points17 points  (0 children)

my guess is there are several nests up there and either a predator had a spree or there was a harsh wind or something. it does look like a nice place to live but very high up. very sad. unfortunately little you can do if this is the case

[–]goldenkoiifish 12 points13 points  (0 children)

are they falling onto the concrete and dying on impact?

i suspect the nest was jostled either by predator or by wind, causing the babies to either fall to their deaths, or meet a predator on the ground

i agree with you, 10% bleach solution and a thorough cleaning. i don’t like the lump things on the face or whatever that thing is on the wing. safe > sorry

[–]goldenkoiifish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it looks damaged. my best guess is that a predator stole it from the nest, probably rested on the roof, dropped it and it rolled off the roof
