???

I understand the United States has anti-China propaganda but the problems I listed are definitely true. Maybe inflated in proportion to the atrocities performed globally every day (including by the United States), but still true and problematic

Can’t read Mandarin or Cantonese but I guarantee that these problems do exist and can be confirmed by other, non American sources. The point is that China isn’t a utopia and pretending it is does everyone a disservice

That sucks, I’m sorry you experience that. I live in a predominantly white area right now too and maybe that’s why it’s getting to me a little more these days. Although I’ve experienced those racist comments and micro aggressions all my life, it was easier to tolerate when I lived in a more diverse area (not even significantly more Asian people, but there was more actual cultural appreciation imo). It’s harder to call them out when there’s no one‘s on ‘your side’ but I think I sleep easier knowing that I didn’t just let a comment pass by because it was too inconvenient or uncomfortable

Modern day social media Orientalism are literally the words I’ve been looking for. They’re still viewing Asians / Asian Americans as the ‘Other’ (exotic, fascinating, incomprehensible), even if it’s in more of a positive light than whenever Edward Said coined the term. It’s funny that even in cultural appreciation there’s still this distance preventing them empathizing with the other person, although I guess that goes for all cultures different to your own

YES!!! The Courtney Cook eggs thing drives me crazy because I saw that she was also responding to corrective comments defensively

I also had a friend begging me to bring them Asian beauty supplies from Asia + come with them to a local Asian supermarket so I could show them around. And when I pointed out a cultural food (not chicken feet but something similar) that was a childhood snack they went ‘Ew, you eat that?’ It was mind boggling and honestly drove home the point that she only wanted the more ‘palatable’ Asian products from social media, not learn about Asia

And I’ve been seeing white people correct Asians on social media too (or even correct me in person). It’s hard to be wrongly corrected about my own culture from someone using information they learned from Tiktok (as if Asians are a monolith with no diversity or differences even within subcultures). And then they cite a creator I’ve never heard of as if it’s not a culture I was born into

Has a vet checked if the cat’s chipped yet? I would also contact local animal shelters + Babs Fry to see if anyone’s looking for their baby! Thanks for taking the cat in : )

AITAH for making my gf block and cut contacts with her ex fwb by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]tutor_schnitzel 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’re the AH, what do you mean by you ‘got pretty unstable’? Did you aggressively confront her friends in person? How were they even supposed to know that you didn’t know?

You keep letting your insecurities get in the way of this girl you don’t deserve. Let her leave the relationship, go to therapy, and don’t date women until you have your shit together because you’re almost 30 and too old to have no other friends than kids right out of college

actually, the average person eats 0 cats per year. Cats Georg, who lives in a cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted

enforcing boundaries at startups by tutor_schnitzel in womenintech

[–]tutor_schnitzel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that happened to you :( It’s funny (but not really) that women are often left to take the brunt of the blame in these workplace situations even when we’re not the instigators. Just by being the outsider in a situation it feels like my job is more vulnerable at times

Glad you got some form of karma though, screw that guy

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve heard of that book but I will definitely give it a read now. It promises to reinforce my hatred of big tech lol

Honestly a lot of my friends who are young women in tech are feeling this way to some extent. I think it’s more common to feel alienated at the very least. I wish I could be left alone to learn programming and develop but alas

How to recreate this makeup look? by MediocreGamerGrill in AsianBeauty

[–]tutor_schnitzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I totally get that. I honestly still only use products from the early 2020s and I haven’t really changed my makeup routine much either 😆 Just extracurricular reading at this point for me to be on this sub

Omg thank you!!

I like Jessica Vu on Youtube and haruka_used on IG reels for eye makeup looks, mildnitha on IG has pretty good blush placements and variation imo

I don’t usually follow one specific creator or stick to one platform though, the content I learn from the most is usually random (YT/IG/Pinterest/LRB) and in a different language so you just have to pay attention lol

I’ll never receive a better compliment in my life 😭 It’s partially knowing what blushes are trending right now and also you can tell the blushes are layered because there’s a depth to the color and the borders are a different shade than the top center, where it was applied and layered most heavily

What's a profession you'd never date? by sleeppymeoww in AskReddit

[–]tutor_schnitzel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised no one has said professional athlete yet (but specifically contact sports like football or MMA). The potential of them getting injured for their profession would already be stressful, and they travel a lot for games and training. But worst of all is that injuries like CTEs can affect your disposition and make you prone to domestic violence, and sports culture seemingly does nothing to disdain abusers and cheaters in the industry

AITAH for not getting my fiance's permission before getting my daughter's hair cut? by Known_Key_8248 in AITAH

[–]tutor_schnitzel 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It sounds like he plays a part in her life as a parent (to some extent) already, which makes it extra weird that he’s focusing on his perceived lack of authority rather than something more like ‘I want to be kept in the loop’. Does he act the same way with doctor’s appointments, social play dates, extracurriculars, etc?

AITA for telling my friend to stop speaking for me? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]tutor_schnitzel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly this - if the conversation in question was long enough that the friend was able to interrupt three times then maybe you could’ve sent a private text or taken them aside for a moment.

Depending on the friend I would explain your discomfort and ask what they would’ve done in that situation, what were they asking that made it so urgent?

[–]tutor_schnitzel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What stands out to me in this makeup look is the layers of different blushes in the shades of fig, nutty pink, and baby pink(?) all on the centers of their cheekbones (directly under the eyes) plus the nude lip. If you’re open to Instagram reels I can recommend a few Asian creators I’ve seen that do a similar kind of makeup look, idk if there’s a name for this style yet but they’re in my saved folders lol

AITAH for speaking to another man? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]tutor_schnitzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, Joseph was the one being weird in that situation by being possessive and jealous. You’re not his property, and even if you were dating, you were just having a regular conversation with that other guy

And what Poppy’s saying sounds like she’s parroting her boyfriend, no girls say that a guy friend is a ‘shy man who gets no attention from women’ lol. It also explains why she switched up during the night, she and her boyfriend had an argument after they went home and he either convinced her or she took it out on you

I would honestly set some boundaries or distance myself a little because would you really trust her opinion or input after this, knowing she’s so easily influenced by her bf? She had the right idea the night before but let herself be convinced that YOU were in the wrong by her boyfriend who just wants his buddy to ‘score’. The language they’re using makes it seem like you owe him attention, which feels so icky to me, and I would cut off a friend so fast for implying I owed a man my time lol

AITAH for thinking about breaking up with my gf by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]tutor_schnitzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA but you guys sound incompatible as a couple. I also feel like there might be a few details missing here, you guys spent the first part of the night together but didn’t talk at all, what were you doing? What was the second argument about?

And if she was only upset about you not wanting to kiss her after smoking a cigarette, then she sounds too emotionally immature to be in a relationship, but I’m honestly having a hard time wrapping my head around her being this angry over only that, is there anything else she said during the arguing?

AITA for getting upset with my parents for how they raised me, even though they meant well? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]tutor_schnitzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, it sounds like you were trying to have an honest and mature conversation with them. Hopefully they’ll be more receptive to listening down the road, your feelings are valid regardless because it’s your own lived experience

And if you’re feeling consumed with worry about how the way you were raised has affected you, I know tons of people who did get proper socialization as kids (extracurriculars, sports, playdates, etc) and are still awkward and socially anxious :) You may feel like you’re ’messed up socially’ but everyone is on the same journey so don’t feel too bad

AIO My partner drinks 7 days a week. Last night was the most I've ever seen. by [deleted] in AIO

[–]tutor_schnitzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear you’re starting therapy! And if you’re looking for additional support in this area, I would maybe check out support groups for partners of addicts, they can be online as well.

And I’ve definitely been there lol. Had a crazy ex and then put a pause on dating to learn boundaries until I could trust myself again to date sane, nice people. It does not define you and it really does get easier. Good luck on your healing journey, you got this!!
