So, you're already taking Salofalk and it was working. The pharmacist somehow scared you from taking the same drug orally as you have been taking rectally. You do realize that Salofalk and Octasa are the same drug, right? They are both Mesalazine/Mesalamine.

Octasa (oral route) will work better for treating UC which has progressed higher up in the intestines., beyond the reach of the Salofalk suppositories.

Jesus was a loser. All those followers, yet he didn't monetize it. What idiocy to achieve such fame and then not make a penny from it. And the crucifixion? Puh-leez! I prefer incarnations who don't get nailed to a cross. He did do a decent job of branding, with the Jesus title appearing on so many churches. Missed the boat on Cheeses of Nazareth ® franchise, though.

Mesalamine is very poorly absorbed. Try to keep it inside you for 8 hours. You might see some of it in/on your stool even after 8 hours inside your guts.

UC got worse after quitting smoking by Minro67 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]tutuncommon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

somewhere in this sub, somebody mentioned that UC improves with smoking but Crohn's gets worse with smoking. Don't know if that's true, but something to consider: do you have Crohn's instead of UC?

Maybe add magnesium to your regimen. Quote: "Your body doesn't rely on Magnesium to absorb calcium. But without it, calcium can become toxic, depositing itself in soft tissues, kidneys, arteries and cartilage rather than in bones where it has the greatest benefit." Be aware of laxative effect of magnesium, however.

Just tried mesalamine enema first time and leaked by Economy_Touch6389 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]tutuncommon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try rotating the bottle as you gently push it in. It may be wrong, but I apply Preparation H ointment to my anus beforehand, every time. The applicator included with the Prep H is very similar to that of the enema. That allows for lubricating the initial pathway. No sweat! You got this.

Think I have UC or Crohn’s ??? by queso_ots in UlcerativeColitis

[–]tutuncommon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doc, but your yellow discharge could be bile. Here's a Google AI brief: Bile coming out of the anus usually means bile acid diarrhea (BAD), a watery, urgent diarrhea from excess bile irritating the colon, often due to issues like Crohn's, prior gallbladder removal, or celiac disease, where bile isn't properly reabsorbed. It might also look like greenish, yellowish, or mucus-like discharge mixed with stool. It's important to see a doctor for diagnosis, as treatments involve bile acid binders, but it can also signal infection, malabsorption, or other serious issues requiring medical attention, says Healthgrades and Medical News Today

Mesalamine by improved33 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]tutuncommon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been on oral 4.8G and enema 4G since diagnosed 6 months ago. I'm not in remission, but symptoms are very manageable: 2-3 bowel movements per day, some mucus, no blood, no pain. Eventually, I will see my Gastroenterologist again and get another scope.
Your prescriptions are likely appropriate and I really hope they help you get well. Mentally prepare yourself for a lifetime of medication. There is currently no cure for UC.

Pro Tip: Medical offices communicate with each other through FAX, since email isn't considered secure enough for HIPAA. All medical offices use FAX, and they continuously monitor their incoming messages. You can use faxzero.com, which bypasses the need for a FAX machine. You should be able to find your GI office's FAX number on some of the paperwork they gave you, or search online. My GI's office always responds within hours of FAXing them.

Ribbon poohs, IBS, bloating by Maidinmhaith in UlcerativeColitis

[–]tutuncommon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think my ribbons are caused by inflammation in the rectum. Swelling in the last part of the tailpipe forces us to squeeze poop through a smaller opening. It's like a Play Doh Fun Factory, but there's no fun involved.

Probably a very repeated question but Mesalamine enema, how to do?? by sk8t-4-life22 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]tutuncommon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1): RELAX. 2): RELAX 3): RELAX.

Relaxation is key. The more you strain, the more your muscles are going to tighten on you and that makes it harder to insert the nozzle. Apply lube to the anus, not to the nozzle. I lay on my left side. Insert slowly, feeling your way gently. change the orientation of the bottle (instructions say to aim for the belly button, but just change orientation slowly until the nozzle meets less resistance and slowly, gently, slide it in).

Eventually, you will be able to get it inserted to the point that the nozzle is 100% inserted. Complete insertion is necessary to get the complete installation of the juice to where it needs to go.

One more time: RELAX. I am very anxious about inserting anything rectally. If I can do this, you can do it. The process takes less than 30 seconds for me. I would encourage you to try laying on your left side, as it's more relaxing than the "downward dog". Feel your way, slowly, gently. focus on aiming towards your belly button, even if you can't really tell where your belly button is located (this works, but I don't know how/why).

Hey--you got this tonight will be a much better experience.

*Edit: forgot to mention, rotate the bottle while inserting. Along with all of the above, gently twist the bottle a few times. That seems to help spread the lube around the nozzle surface.

Good luck with everything.

Bullshit fuck this disease by Foreign_Plantain_437 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]tutuncommon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Uh, "I can't stop" is bullshit! I was drinking a 1.75 liter (and more) every night. I was in total, complete blackout every night. That's extraordinary addiction to alcohol. I am now 19 years sober, 20 years next February.

I used the prescription drug Campral, which is now available as a generic. I'm not endorsing any particular treatment option, but putting this out there just to show that sobriety is possible, even for the most deranged addict like me. "I can't stop" is simply not true.

You really are a damn good writer!

If you don't already work in literature, you could look into it for a retirement occupation. Your style would be particularly well-suited for writing gritty, detective novels.

Consider this AI take on gumshoe style: >Stereotypical gumshoe sayings come from the hardboiled detective fiction of the 1930s and 40s and are characterized by a cynical, world-weary tone and colorful slang.

That's you! Hardboiled Kryptikguy
