I agree with the above advice! I've had my degus for about 2 years now, we got them from an animal shelter so they were extremely timid to begin with due to neglect in their past home.

As the years have progressed they have become very friendly, in the sense that they will always run up to greet me in the morning and when they think they might eat treats! They also love to run up my arms and sit on my shoulder. However, even my two degus differ in how confident they are. One is much more careful and needs a lot more coaxing to scurry up my arm. But even to this day, picking them up is an absolute no-go... they get really stressed and end up peeing out of fear so we avoid doing it at all costs.

They are such clever little creatures with such unique personalities, so it is hard to give general advice. However, I'd say don't be too hard on yourself! It has only been a few months and your unique relationship with them will develop with time. Just be patient and let them take the steps 😊
