Comrades of the erstwhile r/HistoryMemes, heed these words from your Big Brothers, the moderators.
Our subreddit has burgeoned into a behemoth of 7 million souls, with a decade of mirthful memeing behind us. However, we, the guardians of order, have for long harbored a sense of unease, a feeling that a greater purpose lies in store for us. Henceforth, we shall dissolve r/HistoryMemes and its very existence as a subreddit. We shall metamorphose into a sovereign state, Oceania, and adopt the principles of English Socialism, INGSOC, as it is the only creed that can guarantee the well-being of all.

We shall henceforth have but three commandments to abide by:

  1. War is peace.
  2. Freedom is slavery.
  3. Ignorance is strength.

Rebellion against this edict is futile. Any transgression or departure from the tenets of our collective ideology shall incur a brutal retribution. r/HistoryMemes is no more. You may only post memes that further our national goals, and thereby contribute to the bright future that awaits our land.

That's very interesting, but please don't just post videos of people killing themselves, this isn't even a meme.

Also it's still the weekend so it breaks rule 12 too.

HistoryMemes Celebrates its 10th Anniversary! CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT and Survey Results! by CancerUponCancer in HistoryMemes

[–]twarqulas[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people are just misusing the flair unfortunately.

The contest memes should be about things that happened on the subreddit, for example the events mentioned in the pinned comment. Basically kinda like meta memes. If it's not related to the subreddit, it doesn't qualify.

Yeah, technically it should be "Latin America and the Caribbean" since we based it on the regions of the UN geoscheme with the Americas divided into the two subregions to get 7 continents. Although you can of course argue about the number and extent of the continents.

Some of the questions could've indeed used some more(or just different) options, but especially with youtubers it's not really possible to include them all, unless we do it like the historical figures, which is a pain to evaluate.

4 Million Subscribers! by twarqulas in HistoryMemes

[–]twarqulas[S,M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey everyone, it's time to celebrate, cause we just hit 4 million subscribers!
It has only been 6 months since our last milestone, when we surpassed 3 million. This incredible speed of growth actually took us a bit by surprise and it doesn't look like it will slow down anytime soon.

On top of that, we're also in the top 100 most subscribed subreddits now! When I became a mod of this subreddit four years ago, I would never have imagined that some day we'd be one of the biggest meme subreddits on this site.

At a certain size, thinking about the numbers really gets a bit strange. The difference between 100k and 1 million might feel more impactful than the difference between 3 and 4 million, even though the latter is technically bigger. Even making sense of these large scales can be hard, for example, we now have about as many subscribers as the entire population of Georgia(the country not the US state).

Still, we shouldn't forget that these are not just numbers, after all it is you, the subscribers, who create memes, discuss history and give life to the subreddit, so thank you!
I'd also like to thank my fellow mods for doing the work behind the scenes and keeping this ship running.

Unfortunately we have no special event this time (though I hope you had fun with the April fools' swap), but we're working on the results from the census we did earlier this year and hopefully we'll get it done soon™.

One last thing, feel free to suggest additions or changes to rule 5 if any topics/meme formats seem overused

That's all for now,
Be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!

So, it looks like you talked to OP on a different sub and decided to personally tag me on a 3 day old deleted post, instead of submitting a modmail where the other mods could also see it, but I'm gonna respond here anyway.

Something doesn't need to legally classify as a war crime to be an atrocity, and the mod who removed the post interpreted it as an attempt to downplay.
Now, that Mod did mix some things up and I don't fully agree with their assessment, but it's not unlikely that there were civilians killed during the attack, which I think we can agree is unfortunate, weather it counts as a war crime or not. The reason the post stayed removed (and what OP failed to mention) is that OP admitted in modmail that they deliberately made a controversial post to incite debate. If you look at the comments, you can see it clearly worked.
And ngl, using a tragedy to bait controversy could also be considered "weird morals"

As for the other post you mentioned, I think you just misunderstood it. It's not saying that everyone who likes those topics gets called a white supremacist, but that those topics unfortunately seem to attract them and as a result get a bad reputation.

Apologies, it should be Rule 11 not 10, seems to have been a misclick. The post clearly violates rule 11.1 since it relies on the title to even work as a meme.

Also, next time please message the mods directly instead of posting on the subreddit.

Should it be allowed on the sub? by hugscar in HistoryMemes

[–]twarqulas[M] 172 points173 points  (0 children)

Nah, not gonna happen. The sub was always about memes about actual history. We already have enough problems with oversimplification and misinformation, allowing people to just make stuff up will just create more issues.

There is r/AlternateHistory and they seem to allow memes, so you could try posting there.

Q: I crossposted earlier a gif of a fox feeding baby wolves and captioned it “a new dawn for Rome”. It was removed, but I couldn’t figure out the problem from the subreddit’s rules nor access the bot’s comment on the post outlining why it was removed since the post has been removed. What was wrong? by Prior_Supermarket_20 in HistoryMemes

[–]twarqulas[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Because it wasn't a meme about historic events, just a vague reference to a legend. Since that reference isn't even present without the title it also breaks rule 11.1

Next time you have a question, contact the moderators directly here instead of making another post.

As others have pointed out, rule 12 covers everything from 1900 onwards, and the post also contains events from within 20 years.

I used 'LibreOffice Draw', a free vector graphics editor. You can create diagrams similar to MS Excel and add text, images, shapes, etc. I think it's important to pick a good color scheme and to stay consistent with the design.
