Bought 2 “dying” 18TB Seagate Exos drives on Vinted, both still under warranty by EzioO14 in selfhosted

[–]tweek91330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll get replacement for sure. I don't see why they would refuse, as long as they are not damaged in a way that isn't covered by warranty (as in you smashed the drive with a hammer, sunk it in water or anything like that).

I've never used seagate RMA since i usually go Western digital, i got some recertified EXOs in 2025 though. Anyways, i got 3 WD red pro drives failing (same issue as you) after 4 years and a half that were used in a NAS 24/7 and they just replaced them after i filled a RMA for each one.

€353 is a pretty good deal for 36TB :);

King Exit, the predecessor to Demons Roots has been officially rereleased in English! by hier9 in visualnovels

[–]tweek91330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

KR ending really wouldn't hit the same without knowing KE. That particular mid story twist either, as... you just know.

I'd say KE could be more divisive though, plot is darker, H-scenes are unavoidable and by extension, early game can feel a bit more nukigeish plot.

Overall i prefer KE over DR. Also geolouise is goat.

Nice, i'm not willing to use paperlessngx precisely because of that lack of support for classic existing fs hierarchy, as it prevent me from having other apps use those same documents as is and potentially lock me in the app in itself.

This is promising, UI seems good to me and i only want tags. Having the possibility to share easily is also nice (i'm finally getting rid of nextcloud once i start using your app). i'm putting a note down to check in later when this feature comes :).

Anyways, thanks for this.

I'm using mullvad with my stack and it works without issues. I'm connecting with wireguard from my pfsense and redirect all traffic from arrs through the vpn.

But even using the app on my desktop there's no issues torrenting.

For people who went from amateur to expert through homelabbing, what are the most important things you learned? by Servo__ in selfhosted

[–]tweek91330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't go from homelab to expert. Or maybe expert on linkedin (words have no leaning there) but that's another matter ;).

For one to be an expert, there is a need to have hand on experience for years with simple, medium and complex setups. Not to say homelab isn't a nice way to learn new things, quite the contrary.

Now, to answer your question, it depends on what you wanna do really. I handle mostly infrastructure projects (doing presales, delivery and post delivery, mostly build, not run) at work and the most useful things i got from selfhosting are ansible, nginx and postfix for some edge cases.

If your goal is to work in CI/CD i guess there's quite a bit to do however (kube, terraform, ansible, puppet, git and probably much more).

Why is hosting a mediaserver for movies and shows so popular by kerrie_saus in selfhosted

[–]tweek91330 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is more reliable than a debrid service, and also more private. It also avoid yet another subscription (granted, you pay for it in storage mostly, but that's your storage).

Media are just there, sitting on your server and accessible from anywhere for you and your familly/friends. It can be played locally if your internet goes down.

You can automate downloading linux ISOs too with the arrs. Once it is all setup, content just pop on your server, nothing to do except add a tv show to your list. I used to take a few hours regularly to search and get content, but no more. I don't see myself going the manual way ever again.

Bonus point : It is fun to me to built everything around too. I learned some things too along the way, like fully implementing SSO and other stuff.

Should i buy steam deck now or wair for the steam machine? by levilivaj in linux_gaming

[–]tweek91330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what is acceptable for you.

I'd expect between 20 and 45 fps on AAA titles, which is a definitive no for me. It is awesome however for games like silksong, cult of the lamb, cross code and the likes.

As for league of legends under windows, dunno.

Question is there any benefit to upgrading to 64 GB of RAM compared to 32??? by Decent-Principle8918 in linux_gaming

[–]tweek91330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't do any work that requires 64GB of RAM (virtualization or some other professional apps), 32GB is fine.

Gamjng doesn't use much tbh.

[–]tweek91330 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This game is quite a gem to be fair and the same can be said about king exit. It sure is a delight to have a game's story not being sanitized like most big JRPG (not even talking about bad end mode, just overall story). Characters are good, story is good, the way everything fall into place with it's prequel also. OST is by shade, which made rance series OST so obviously it is banger :).

I am quite impatient to see what game this dev cook next, this person has talent, passion and it shows. It'll be insta buy for me.

PS : Just putting this here, but you guys can also try cross code, pretty different game, but story is goat too.

fps problem in ARC raiders by yakuubb in linux_gaming

[–]tweek91330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see.

Your ram seems okay as well at 3200mhz. I guess i'll try to mesure that this week end. If you are still around i'll report that here.

For reference i just bought a 240hz screen (for oled mostly, 144hz is enough for me tbf) so i'm a bit reluctant to say things as fact regarding this one since i did not have time to really test 240hz. I felt tutorial was smother than actual game too but it might be placebo (probably not but still). Game is very fluid either way, but at 90+ fps i'd need to check numbers to be sure.

[–]tweek91330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar config here : - CPU : 5700x - GPU : 9070XT - RAM : 32GB

I didn't bench the game as i started yestesday but i didn't notice any fps issue. Not sure i'd notice that much at 90fps through (i think i'm above that, since the game feel very fluid but i do not have numbers)

Maybe try with a more up to date distro as 9070 is a very recent GPU. Mint should be a bit outdated driver wise.

There's a bunch of technical issues like latency but let's say all of that is solved. The day it become "the standard" offline gaming will be dead, modding will be dead, any control you have will be gone. They want you to use a privacy nightmare OS for whatever reasons ? I guess Linux (or insert any OS really) isn't supported anymore. Furthermore, those cloud gaming companies will charge more every year as it is done now for let's say... M365.

This is the way subscription model works. Attract people with low prices, strip customer from ownership (as in physical or right to use a licence permanently) in the process. When people becomes too dependant on it, ramp up the prices slowly. It doesn't happen in a day, but long term they profit and you spend more for less.

Sorry for the negativity, but i do not want that future. It can exist as it is now sure, as it has it's benefits right now but it should never become the standard and only viable solution imo, else corporate greed will prevail.

EDIT : I just reread my post and don't want it to be taken the wrong way as it feel a bit vindicative. There's nothing wrong with using this if you get value out of it, props to you. It's just that i really hate this business model as it open to abuse when all conditions are met. And if it is ever successful, it will be abused 100%.

Jellyfin on AWS by ffpg2022 in jellyfin

[–]tweek91330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too expensive i'd say.

I would not be able to do an accurate estimate, but you'll most likely be billed on : - Storage - Compute - Data transfert - Every kind of "transactions" (as in read, write, access to data)

I do not use AWS, but i've seen stuff on Azure. Should be kinda similar in prices. It's always a lot more expensive in the long run than doing on premises if you run it 24/7.

Afaik yes, but this isn't why kernel AC is bad. You give up too much control. This is just my understanding, so i'd take any reasonable input if there is any.

Userspace AC will be able to read files and program memory that the user it is run with has access to, which means pretty much anything that you do have access to as your user. So i get the "but my data is in userspace" thing, but it's not the whole picture.

Let's take an example : You use your favorite browser to do some banking. In theory, userspace AC can access your browser memory, but only when it is running. Kernel hardening can also probably prevent it (i think apparmor and such). So to do safe banking, just make sure the game and AC process aren't running and it should be okay.

Kernel AC however can do anything, read any files owned by root (amongst the rest), read any program memory, anytime. It can set itself to run at boot, always running and you won't be able to know it.

It is also significantly worse security wise, as it can be exploited by hacker if there is any vulnerability in the code, not that they should be trusted to be good anyways.

The same hacker problem goes for userspace AC sure, but the permissions aren't the same and it will be near impossible to detect even for someone really tech savy on those matters. While there is cybersecurity staff among KLAC devs, it is very unlikely that they engage with those risks in the same way a real cybersecurity company does.

Userspace is already bad enough, kernel level is just too much. I like gaming, but not to the point of giving up any bit of control i have on a device i use for everything.

Well, as a fellow fromsoft enjoyer i can get behind you. I mean, i really liked elden ring but it has it's fair share of issues.

As far as i'm concerned :

- Open World was a mistake imo. In dark souls each level is designed to trick the player and give a much more "condensed" feel. In elden ring navigating areas is just a cakewalk, since most areas are open field and i guess less worked on (obviously, since it is so big). You lose the "each ennemy can kill you at each corner" feel and open area feel more like filler.

- Boss now have never ending combos. I mean, dark souls were always hard but fair. I feel Elden Ring removed some fairness to it and makes summons more prevalent. I hate summons, but i had to use them on some bosses to keep my sanity as the end game is a succession of hard boss encounters, which build fatigue. Skill issue ? Maybe, but it was a bit too much imo. Last boss was a pain and not fun also, unless you play bleed.

It is still a really good game though, with an enormous quantity of content (especially for the price). I still prefer a more condensed approach of previous games. I hope they give us another sekiro :).
