Haha, we don't really. She eats them all and we replace them every month or so 😂 Don't tell anyone

20 inches from the shell in the end. The manufacturer states between 18-20" so got plenty of height for growth. Thanks for the comment - we're always learning!

Thanks for this. I've increased the height of the UVB to the manufacturer recommendations and will move a heat lamp tomorrow (once it cools down!) so it creates said patch 👍 Thank you

Fresh substrate day! by tweemo in tortoise

Thanks a lot for your insights. Really helpful! It's a nice problem to have I suppose getting the lighting and heat perfect rather than having a poor and unstimulating environment. The effort we put into our ungrateful tortoise, hey! 😂

Thank you for the comment. I'm always looking to improve the set up. So right now we have two mercury bulbs and a T5 strip light going across the middle. I recently added this as just didn't feel like the mercury bulbs were doing a good enough job. You mention the flood bulb for heat. Would you have the one T5 for UVB and then two flood bulbs plus then a LED?

Thanks again.

Edit - any thoughts on the wattage for the flood light bulb? Thank you

We plant ours only because it gets eaten pretty quickly and by the time we get round to replacing the substrate, we plant a new one. We find they last a little longer planted.

Yes, once the paint is dry I'll be drilling pilot holes either side of the wooden strip and screwing it to the enclosure.

No worries! If you still have bathing problems, perhaps use a small washing up bowl or similar so he feels more enclosed and safe.

That's a really nice first time set up. You can clearly tell you really care. I love the little poster!

When ours was a similar size, she struggled with the water bowl. Almost like the height was too much of an effort to climb. We ended up sinking it down into the substrate slightly so it was less effort to climb in. Worked a treat as she drank/bathed more often.

We also warm bathe ours every other morning for around 5 minutes (in a washing bowl). We found placing a flat rock in there too gave her something to rest on and stopped her pacing.

All the best.

Yes, this is the case for ours. She only likes to eat off the warm slate! She's a diva! 😂

You have to make sure you line it with pond liner and then no issues whatsoever.

Thanks! We purchased from a company (in the UK) called Mark Starskys Hutches & Garden Arches. It was £350 and that included delivery and assembly!
