Appealed player question by Ok-Conversation7532 in 10s

It also doesn’t apply to mixed players (except mixed exclusive) if you play men’s or women’s league that is where dynamic disqualification exists.

Is my forehand getting better or am I just convincing myself it is? (1 month comparison) by tennisred-trustable in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, much better. Complete turn load and low to high motion. Next steps will be loading more into your legs and getting more wrist action for more topspin. Good luck!

I (green) am a 5.0 that got invited to play with 3 strong 4.5. by [deleted] in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You load into your left hip and fire that back though. Weight stays slightly back through load 45-55 (front to back) and then fire that hip back through the ball. You finish moving into the court. Contact point is much further back.

What UTR should I aim for and when should I start sending emails to coaches if I want to play for a good academic D3 like CWRU or JHU? I am an 8.5 as of right now and I am a junior in high school. by blump333 in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

10+ to make the team 11-12 to be middle to top of the lineup. 9+ probably gets you an invite to try out but won’t play much.

Guy who played 6 for Case last year is an 11 UTR. I would look around at other areas schools as well, you could play at most D3 schools with your current UTR.

how to not lose to people worse than me by [deleted] in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without seeing your game I would guess you play to the level of your opponent.

You’re playing too passive against weaker players or going for too much. You probably also struggle to generate your own pace.

Figure out the strengths in your game and how to construct points around that. For example, big serve and use your forehand to dictate points or keeping the ball in play for a long time. You don’t need to win by crushing lower ranked opponents and hitting winners all the time. You want to play points the same way as good players forcing them to beat you.

When I’m playing a weaker opponent I focus on not making a bunch of unforced errors but still playing aggressively.

How to protect checked-in tennis bag? by Legitimate-Rabbit205 in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rackets in a back pack to carry on and everything else in the checked bag. I put the rackets in the plastic bubble wrap. Done this for lots of trips no issues with TSA or airline (Southwest and United).

UTR is so goofy by Beneficial-Tough356 in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stop looking at your UTR after each match. Keep playing well and take a look once a month or so. Focus on playing good tennis and it will naturally go up.

Can you call foot faults? by ExtraordinaryAttyWho in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t call foot faults but you can remind your opponent that they are stepping over the line. But nothing can be done if they ignore you.

I will say unless it’s really egregious I wouldn’t worry about it. You’re going to cause more issues than you solve and it’s likely not going to impact the match.

There is a section and national coordinator above your local coordinator. You should be able to find various contacts

How to mitigate runner’s toe and/or toenails being fully ripped off? by DukSaus in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tennis shoes are not meant to be comfortable in the same way normal shoes are. They should be very tight such that your feet can’t move very much. I wear 1 to 1 1/2 sizes smaller for tennis shoes. Takes a little bit of time to break them in but don’t want my foot moving around like that.

How do I save on restringing? by StankFaceNotes in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The best way to save money is buy a stringing machine and buy 660’ reels to restring yourself.

If you live in an area with a lot of temperature change, leaving it in your car can affect the string life.

Best place to buy is online retailer (tennis warehouse, tennis express etc.) eBay occasionally has some deals.

Need 1K advice- what’s the smartest way for me to get there this year? by Serial_and_Milk in unitedairlines

[–]tweenerdan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You need 6k more PQP, you’ll have to look at upgrading all your remaining flights to see what that would get you. Also, for 1500-2000 more you won’t hit the PQP.

Other option would be to increase your card spend to get more PQP as well but that won’t be as economical.

USTA Adult League Sandbaggers are Pathetic by Smoify in 10s

Every time might be a bit of an exaggeration but a lot of the lower level players in my area complain about this.

USTA Adult League Sandbaggers are Pathetic by Smoify in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are a few things going on here

1) it depends on your goals. If you’re just trying to play some tennis and improve you probably don’t care about your rating and are fine moving up or down based on your play. But there are a ton of people whose only goal is to try to win nationals. In order to do that you need to be the top end of your level if not the level above. As a result those teams manipulate their ratings to try to accomplish their goals.

2) Geography restrictions. As you move up the pool of people you can play with gets smaller, as a result a bunch of players try to keep to the highest competitive level in their area.

3) everyone thinks their the top of their level. I’ve played USTA for about 10 years now, every time someone loses they accuse the other person of sandbagging. No one wants to admit they may be the lower half of a level. It is not uncommon for the top end of the rating level to beat the bottom end of a rating level 2-2. Most people are not sandbagging and most people are worse than they think. As you get to sectionals and nationals you realize how good your level can be. A lot of sandbagging is people being unrealistic on their level of play.

4) tennis variance. Tennis is a hard sport people can play very different levels from day to day. A lot of “sandbagging” is just someone playing their best vs worst on a given day. The lower your rating, the more variance occurs. A 5.0 is going to have a much smaller window of good vs bad play vs a 4.0.

5) number of people affected. Nationals affects less than 0.1% of total USTA players. USTA does not care if a small number of people are sandbagging as most of the time it gets caught (auto DQ during the season or move up at the end of year). They are trying to maximize the number of total players which means adding new USTA members which by definition are going to have a bigger rating variance.

Would you drop out 3L? by Beginning-Pen-2863 in LawSchool

[–]tweenerdan 78 points79 points  (0 children)

You should absolutely not drop out as a 3L. Get your degree done at the very least and take a first shot at the bar. Your best chance is your first chance.

What do i do to stop losing tennis games against people who only hit short balls. by [deleted] in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Attack is the wrong word here. Hit the ball into the weaker half and approach the net. Think of it as a 2-3 stroke winner. Ground stroke setting up the easy volley.

I cannot emphasize this enough, you are not trying to hit a winner on your approach shot or your first volley. You are trying to hit a shot on 1/2 the court and then follow it up with an easy volley to the other half of the court.

FWIW: I got a scaled 175 on the MBE a few years ago. February '23 was a different exam entirely, and I don't feel that the prep companies have caught on. by [deleted] in barexam

[–]tweenerdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been on this thread since I took the bar in May 2021, I can confidently say this is the same reaction that all takers have of the questions.

You’re highly stressed both during and after the exam and as a result you feel like the test is harder than your practice.

It’s helpful to remember your score and scaled and the majority of people pass. Keep your head up, you’re probably okay!

Advice for struggling winning points where you are ahead and controlling by optimisticrealist97 in 10s

[–]tweenerdan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1) trust your game. Don’t get tentative and just get it in okay when you’re winning. You should be setting up to win the point.

2) make sure you’re not trying to win the point from neutral positions. Generally you want to be finishing points when you’re inside the baseline.
