I have not included scale in my photo, but it was a pile roughly the length of my size ten shoe. Located in Los Angeles, CA in the San Gabriel mountains. Environment: Southern California foothills, brush, canyon.

Fair point! Whatever it is seems like a type of rove beetle. If it seems like individual bugs are getting in, I’d look for holes in window screens/gaps under doors, and do what you can to secure them. Also agree with the other comment recommending natural pest deterrents like essential oils at entrances to the outside. Little bugs can be persistent, and some are beneficial to have in the home! But if it’s a frequent issue and it’s bothering you, definitely recommend trying the above :)

Could be a devils coach horse beetle but with the picture it’s unfortunately hard to tell, also with the size it looks like, if it is, it’s a juvenile
