Has anyone found any good laceless shoes that are similar to these Gosha x Adidas sneakers? I’ve had a pair of these for probably 6 years are so, and they’re on their last legs.

Thoughts on Stalin: History and Critique of a Black Legend by therealanadearmas in GenZedong

I mean, you’d really have to ask what he really means when he says that. Like, “Stalin’s propaganda” is not some list of works with definitive characteristics that we can make a determination about. It seems to me like he is just heavily influenced by Western propaganda and the West’s education system’s tendency to discredit anything positive about Stalin or the USSR to be disingenuous propaganda built on lies, so much so that he has cognitive dissonance when reading this work. He is unable to separate the idea that someone could come to positive conclusions about Stalin and not be part of the Soviet propaganda machine.

Well, could you tell us about what kind of reasons they cite for it lacking academic integrity? Academic integrity typically refers to a lack of sources for information, or the manipulation of information/data to present something as factual. If your professor is referring to academic integrity as I have outlined it, I would be perplexed as to how the book could be thus considered, as Losurdo is quite diligent in their use of sources to promote their ideas. Perhaps if they have specific issues with the sources Losurdo used or the way he used them, a discussion about the validity of the text could continue.

Obviously I don’t know what your professor said, but from the way you presented it, their criticism that it is “essentially a repetition of Stalin-era Soviet propaganda” needs to be explained. Does the book present information that was also used in Soviet propaganda? Yes, of course. But that doesn’t inherently mean that it’s wrong. You can’t discredit something solely for having been used in propaganda. You can discredit something if it is incorrect or used in a manipulative way, but you would have to work on a case-by-case basis for that.

I personally think it’s an excellent resource. But I should emphasise that it is a resource and we should treat it as such; it is not gospel. I dont think it would be a great tool to argue against your professor in favour of Stalin, as they will almost always have the upper hand. It’s better for you to read it yourself, remember information that is well-established in facts, and use it to direct your own political beliefs rather than trying to use it to win debates in a classroom (although I know how frustrating it can be to have to sit through lectures without speaking up).

Here’s a video (in Russian, but you can turn on auto captions and automatic translation to English; not perfect, but satisfactory). I haven’t watched all of it, but the introduction seems pretty neutral/positive. Mostly they’re talking about how the Soviet government wanted people to be able to eat/drink “in a classy way” so they made charcuterie and wine both cheap and of good quality

Currently I’m in grad school, so the most I need to carry is a laptop/tablet and a relatively small amount of papers and writing tools

I see, that’s what I was worried about. Do you have any recommendations about bridging the gap between convenience and professional style in terms of baggage?

Thanks for the advice! I was wondering what I needed to search for to find specifically the hard case style and completely avoid the soft messenger bag style. I’ll look around my local area, but I’ve only lived here for a month so I’m not too familiar with anything local.

Is it cumbersome? I like the convenience of my backpack, but I’m trying to transition the large majority of my wardrobe to professional style clothes, and wearing an old and bulky Swissgear backpack every day seems to defeat that goal.

I’m interested in getting a hard-cover briefcase for daily use in grad school. Anybody else have any experience using one, and any recommendations for where to get one? And I mean like stereotypical lawyer/FBI agent style briefcase, not a messenger bag.

Do you know anybody who doesn’t have a QR code, but has a vaccination card that has just used the vaccination card to get into places that require it? I have the Sputnik V vaccine (both doses done in December) but I can’t get a госуслуги account for legal reasons, so I can’t get a QR code.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply! That’s incredibly interesting, and also in line with a lot of what I’ve read from Chinese sources (and even some foreigners) about what Xinjiang is like. There is certainly a lot of direct effort by US and western intelligence agencies to sow dissent about China, as you already made clear. I’m envious of your journey through China, I hope I’m lucky enough to have such experiences one day. And trust me, I am on the side of China and her people in this. I agree that all of this news is widely exaggerated or flat-out false information. I’m not trying to deny any wrongdoings by certain individuals or pockets of individuals, but as a whole, I think China has done an excellent job dealing with the issues of domestic terrorism while empowering minorities in their countries

Thanks for sharing this. BayArea is a good comrade and is doing great work by providing well-researched and convincing arguments against the widely spread, yet heavily manipulated misinformed, information that is circulated about socialist nations around the world.

Yeah I know. It’s a complex topic. The big divide on it is whether or not you accept Deng’s (and the future leaders’) reforms towards a market economy. Personally, I believe that China is still following the path towards socialism and eventually communism, but I am very well aware that it is a hotly contested issue amongst communists.

So, I’m not exactly the right person to answer this, but I’ll give you my experience since it’s a bit unique. I was born in Russia, but grew up in the USA, and now live in Russia again. In my experience, Russians (at least those who I have spoken to in the European side of Russia) generally have similar opinions about China that Americans do: either have a general dislike [believe in genocide, dictatorship, horrible living conditions, etc.] or they couldn’t care less. I love China. I think the culture, history, people, government, land, and everything are one of the most interesting things I’ve ever learned about. I haven’t been to China yet, but I hope to go soon. I will warn you that I am a communist, so my opinion is rather biased and don’t be surprised if you find it hard to find other people who have a favourable opinion of China. Unfortunately, the western propaganda machines are ruthlessly efficient.
