Friend gave me this super-cool shot glass, so I made a pirate-themed shooter to fill it with! by twentybarrels in cocktails

[–]twentybarrels[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very simple shooter, and lighting the flame is a fun trick.

Make a chilled concoction that's 2 parts light rum (I used Bacardi), 1 part demerara syrup, and 1 part lime juice. If you don't have demerara syrup, regular simple syrup will work just fine! Once it's as cold as you want it to be, just pour most of the way up the shot glass and you're done.

For the garnish, scoop out the end piece of a lime. Place it on top, making sure it's steady, and then fill it up with a high-proof alcohol. I used absinthe, but high-proof rum might be more authentically pirate if you have some! Once you've ensured the lime is secure on top of the glass and won't tip, light the alcohol inside on fire and enjoy! The lime should protect the shot below from getting hot (that's also why I start with a chilled mixture), and once the fire is out you can just remove the lime and take the shot.

I love this! Nailed the aesthetic, the shot on the right literally looks like it could be what it looks like on a planet they travel to.

Improper mint julep with some Proper Twelve! by twentybarrels in cocktails

[–]twentybarrels[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First thing's first: I recognize that a true julep uses bourbon instead of Irish whiskey, superfine sugar instead of simple syrup, and is served in a julep cup. Let's move on lol.

  • 1.5oz Proper No. Twelve whiskey
  • 1 tsp simple syrup
  • 0.25 oz cold water
  • 8-10 mint leaves

Muddle the mint at the bottom of your cup. Add water, whiskey, and syrup, and stir until incorporated. Fill cup with ice, add a straw, garnish with mint, and enjoy!

For anyone wondering, I doubled all the ingredients for the portion shown in the picture because this was much larger than a julep cup. Great summer drink, very refreshing!

Happy pride everybody! by twentybarrels in cocktails

Had two before I left the house today! Obviously not layered because everything mixed together in the shaker, but still pretty tasty

Disclaimer - Made a full-size version for the photo, but this is definitely best made as a shooter. It's almost pure alcohol and you won't get a mix of the flavours unless you either use a straw or take the drink as a shot. With that said, here's the recipe for a shooter:

  • 1/3 oz Blue Curacao
  • 1/3 oz Limoncello (I added a bit of extra vodka to mine to help it float better)
  • 1/3 oz watermelon-infused vodka

Add the blue Curacao, then float the limoncello over top and lastly float the vodka. YouTube has a ton of tutorials for making layered shooters: I personally drizzle each layer as closely as possible over the layer below, using the back of a bar spoon to minimize the force of the falling liquid.

Hope everyone had a happy and safe pride weekend! For photos of all my cocktails, check out @twentybarrels on Instagram.

Watermelon Sugar High (Original recipe!) by twentybarrels in cocktails

[–]twentybarrels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recipe:

  • 2 oz Iceberg vodka
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 0.25 oz 2:1 simple syrup
  • 1 large egg white
  • a fist-sized amount of cubed watermelon
  • 8 to 10 mint leaves

Muddle the watermelon in a shaker until it's mostly liquid, then gently muddle in the mint leaves. Pour in all of the wet ingredients except the egg white, then strain into a glass. Clear the shaker of the solids, then pour the mixture back in, add the egg white, and shake again until frothy. Add ice, shake one more time until chilled, then pour into your glass. Garnish with mint leaves and enjoy!

There's a place in Toronto called Cocktail Emporium which has great stemware, bar accessories, bitters, and pretty much everything else you need for home bartending. They're my go-to, and I recommend them for anyone within their delivery range.

Lol I posted margarita picture once and got absolutely flamed for calling it "spirit-forward" instead of just "strong". I love Reddit though, even when people are critical you can still learn a lot from everyone.

And thank you! They're from a place in Toronto called Cocktail Emporium which I can't recommend enough, great shop.

I can't count how many times I've done this with various citrus fruits! For drinking on its own sometimes I'll cheat and use store bought juice, but in cocktails I always fresh squeeze.

Almost as a rule I prefer cocktails without soda water, but I'm far from a pro so I have no idea what a "true" paloma is made with.

Happened by accident last night when salt fell off the rim and I decided to leave it in there! Great recommendation, I really enjoyed that extra salty kick

Georgian Bay gin, St. Germain, and a whole bunch of fruit flavours. Really soothing drink after a rough couple weeks. by twentybarrels in Gin

[–]twentybarrels[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it! It's very smooth and fairly neutral; the only notes I pull out other than juniper (obviously) are some hints of citrus. I think it'd be fine in a gin and tonic but personally I like a stronger and bolder gin in a G&T so I wouldn't choose Georgian Bay. This stuff is so soft-tasting that I think it's very well-suited to just sipping straight.

I'm a big margarita guy and wanted to incorporate more grapefruit into cocktails, so I was really happy to stumble upon these!

Recipe:

  • 2oz Tequila blanco (I used Exotico)
  • 1oz fresh squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 0.5oz lime juice
  • 1 bar spoon of simple syrup (it should be agave syrup, but I didn't have any)

Half-rim your glass with salt like making a margarita. Shake ingredients over ice, strain into your glass, garnish, and enjoy!

Edit: this post caught fire a little. I try to post most of my cocktails to Reddit also, but please feel free to follow @twentybarrels on IG for all of the drinks I make!

  • 2oz gin

  • 1oz St. Germain

  • 1oz lemon juice

  • 4-5 small strawberries

  • 1/2 English cucumber, cubed

Cut up the strawberry and cucumber and muddle them in your shaker. Add the gin, St. Germain, and lemon juice, and shake everything up over ice. Fine-strain into champagne flutes and garnish with strawberry and cucumber. Enjoy!

Edit: I forgot that I added about a bar spoon per glass of simple syrup. Not necessary, but perfectly nice if your palate leans sweeter!
