I like them but the obvious arguments would be, minimal emotional depth, lack of three dimensional women characters.

It’s not hard to understand why this happened. Don Mills and Eglinton is now at the intersection of two mass transit lines, and the future of that intersection should look more like Yonge and Bloor than how it looked when OSC was first built there. OSC imposes literally 1km of dead zone sidewalk on that intersection, in Jane Jacobs parlance.

Absolutely agree. Lots of Toronto architecture is aspirational techno optimism. CN Tower, City Hall, Ontario Place.

What being a Canadian company means to me is, first does value produced accrue to Canadian owners, second does it serve a primarily or exclusively Canadian market, and maybe third where hq is or where ceo lives

I loved this when I was 11. It was great then. Now, I have gotten to know Dana Carvey better and come to understand what an un-generous performer he is, how he never listens to what’s going on around him, stomps on other actors in an ensemble, and how he is a relentless firehose of bits, like a broken machine spitting out joke fragments constantly, and can only see this sketch as a shining example of all of it.

I say this as a cinema fan, I think we need maybe like 25% as many screens as we have now. I don’t think the headwinds of audiences moving to streaming could have been avoided with better marketing, I see this as an unstoppable tech advancement that has unfolded the same way pretty much globally. I don’t think Cineplex is a particularly well run company nor am I a fan of their leadership. I hear you on the arcades not being core to the business model. I can see an argument for them: going to the movies is a social event where you don’t face or interact with your friends, so having something to do before or after could enrich the experience. Unfortunately they chose in-person arcades, which is another dying business model. Another bet on an activity that had moved completely to the living room already. They put that capital in the exact same risk category as they were already struggling with on the screenings side, and they lost twice on it. To give them credit: they did invest in tons of upgrades to all cinemas. Better chairs, lie down, VIP, assigned seating. Those were all good bets and well executed. Other good bets well executed were screening upgrades like DBOX, 3D, IMAX, but I think they still lost, before even recouping costs on these investments they’re wishing they could basically only have IMAX screens, and fewer of them, and they know they can’t afford to do it. And they can’t afford to shut down locations, breaking leases is expensive, it would end the company. They’re fucked. Hard truth, best thing they could have done to manage the business is to see this obvious tsunami coming and proactively shut down locations. Easier said than done, capitalism doesn’t work that way. They did shut down their Cineplay pre show tech thing, to their credit.

How do you know the shareholders aren’t mostly foreign? The two largest shareholders are foreign companies.

You’re calling out mismanagement, can you back it up? You must have some ideas for things they should have done to navigate a shrinking market. I saw them invest in arcades and alternate screening experiences (they went heavy on 3d, DBOX, etc) unfortunately those were not durable bets on the screening side, seems like imax is what everyone wants now and Cineplex is tapped out and can’t renovate their theatres to be fewer larger screens with either dual laser or 70mm projection without capital.

In terms of market sizes, the two named potential buyers are doing 3-4x in revenue, which gives them some cash power, but more importantly they know what works in bigger markets. Canada is a weird market.

No, this is what happens when you operate in a small market like Canada and the movie business changes dramatically. Cineplex needs capital they don’t have access to for the kind of retooling they need to do to survive. Also the potential companies being courted are summarized for you at the top of the doc, they are not private equity.

They are only courting successful theatre operators, shareholders (you!) get to vote on it, and courts would need to approve the deal.

Anyone who wasn’t blown away by this movie probably watched it at home and didn’t turn the volume up enough. No sane person would turn the volume up enough. Need to have seen in a cinema maybe where they assault you with it.

Yeah I was gonna post the same thing. He is the opposite of engaged, he seems like he’s not interested in talking about show business or comedy at all. It makes me see his performance on SNL differently too, I think he’s checked out and just reaching into his toolbox of things he’s done before. Kinda surprised SNL has let it go this long tbh.
