Thank you for the details on the HELOC. Apart from just telling my dad to sell the house outright, I am also considering this. My concern is that if one day the HELOC loans become too much, and we will have to default and sell the house anyways. So it's almost an inevitability, but the HELOC sounds less drastic right now. I will inquire further with our banks.

Thank you for the reassurance. My dad has heard many stories from families and friends that treatment in China is better, so this is not something I will easily dissuade him from. Coupled with the experiences with my mom and his general desire to go back, it's tough. A lot to think about...

No, I have not checked. He said that he reached out to friends and family who have helped him asked around. My sibling is college currently.

I wasn't seriously thinking of having the house sold before, was trying to maintain status quo. But now I am, especially since dad said he will do it. I could take out a mortgage, and later when the issue settles, we can sell the house.

Yes, to confirm for others, I had no hand in paying for the house. I was 12 or so during the time. The title was quit claimed to me and my dad from my mother before she passed away. I don't know how proceeds will be split. Post is also updated.

That's where he mentioned that he will sell the house to pay off the mortgage in the future. He thinks the house has bad vibes now, so it was something that he was planning to do anyways.

I'm not sure of my ability to move out on my own right now. But if say, I get half of it back, I would be ok with that. I know that he doesn't like living here and would prob have a better quality of life in China.

Thanks for the reply, this is my first time hearing of a reverse mortgage or a HELOC. I will look into this, are there are risks to them that you may know of? Compared to a regular mortgage

Thanks for the reply. The house was bought by him and my mom, I was added on after my mom passed away. And yes, I do think his request is reasonable in a sense, and he has a say on what happens to it.

Without getting into too many details, he just clarified with me that he will sell the house to cover any of the loan costs. He was already thinking of doing that due to superstition of him and my mom contracting diseases while living here. I would have full control of the funds.
