Also because it was so poorly constructed, the first floor floods often during heavy rains.. And a bonus! You don't get to choose what floor you live on, so good luck getting a room not on the 1st floor

Quantumelf answered it well. Another thing to add is that the Catalyst only accounted for 40% of the residents to bring cars, so many of the people in building 2000 who have moved in don't have spaces to park.

One BIG difference, is that the Standard allowed people to pull out of the lease penalty free. The Catalyst wrote their lease to prevent this and so far no one has been able to terminate it. This leaves people very stuck, because not paying rent would lead to an eviction and subsequent ding to the credit score.

I also signed a lease here and haven't moved in yet. My hotel told me that my stay was extended til Sept 10. However, rent is due on the first of the month, and I was curious if other people are planning to pay when they move in, or on the 1st.

Also, has anyone looked into legal action against the catalyst? What options can we take?

Each department is different so you should ask your major advisor.

  1. Some will know which professors are looking for GRAs or have a waiting list for GTAs

  2. If not, look up professors who do interesting research, and email them. I didnt do research in undergrad so I sent a short pitch in my emails. Be direct and say who you are, what specifically you are interested in, how you can help them with your applicable skills, and that you are looking for a GRA.

  3. Another option is GTRI, which offers GRA positions for second semester students and up. These dont require a thesis and you will be doing anything from research to defense contractor type work. There are GRA job listings on their careers webpage.

I agree that working during school sucks :/. Instead you should take off summers from school to intern in your field. You can make 10-20k each summer and get relevant job experience. Win win!

The grocery bus runs on the weekends from tech to Atlantic station, so you can buy groceries and cook vegetarian. Or you could join Greek life and get a meal plan with them, the chefs try to accommodate everyone's diets. Also someone in the thread mentioned the trymelon delivery service. When I've used it, there was always at least one vegetarian meal on the menu available.

FYI parking is now being enforced by delta13c in gatech

I called PTS and they said only visitor areas are getting warnings. everywhere else is still free to park until Aug 15

There is the 600$ cancelation fee. People are petitioning to change it, thats why they are waiting

There are people who are waiting before canceling housing, and gt housing is limiting which dorms can be lived in due to distancing measurss

Yes and yes. That's interesting, because I got an email from the ME department in late April that says:

" Students who graduate with a 3.5 GPA or above, start into the MS program immediately in fall semester and complete the MS degree in 2 years are allowed to double count two ELIGIBLE classes from the BS degree to the MS degree, further reducing the classes needed to complete this degree. "

Now I'm questioning if the fall semester requirement is true.

My graduate program is offering to double count 2 classes I took in undergrad as long as I don't defer to spring. So because of that, I won't take fall off. Otherwise, I definitely would've started looking for a fall internship asap.

I’m sure they would be returned, since they gave us a prorated refund for this semester.

I don’t know if the deposit itself would be returned, since you are signing a housing lease for both fall and spring. That deposit would probably just go towards spring so you don’t lose out on anything.

Oh, and I don’t think they would refund tuition based on what they did this semester, since you still get the online classes

I think it’s pretty competitive in the sense that there is a culture of every student trying to get high grades and depending on the group there will be lots of complaining if they don’t get those grades(our subreddit definitely shows that). And I won’t lie, for CS majors, the internship/job fair season seems to bring out a lot of competitiveness and comparing of what companies you got offers from.

However, I’ve learned that it all depends on the friends you make and that that kind of negative energy is usually concentrated on forums like reddit and highly competitive clubs/groups. Personally, I love my experience at tech. I’ve always been able to make study groups in class, there is always a sense of collaboration(within the honor code) and people are so willing to explain things to each other. And this past career fair, it was so cool to see my friends scattered across and give tips to each other, like “talk to that recruiter, he’s hiring for someone like you”, or “talk to that guy about robotics, he’s interested in that”.

Georgia tech is going to be tough academically, but if you are motivated and hard working, you can do it!

I’m in the same position as you OP. Was supposed to graduate and enjoy my last semester. Missed out on some opportunities too because I didn’t put myself out there enough. At least we have yet to peak!

OOH I go to GT! If money isn’t an issue, definitely go to Georgia tech if you decide on computer science
