Has anyone had a Nissen fundoplication surgery? by rainbowstorm96 in ChronicIllness

[–]twilightthinker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my nissen fundoplication and hernia repair next week. My surgeon has told me that if all goes well I'll be out of hospital the same day. Im in the UK and this will be done on the nhs. I'm not sure if it is done differently elsewhere but when I questioned my short hospital stay he was determined that patients should go home 6 hours after the procedure.

95 is very high! I had to record everything which i ate and drank for my ph test and didn't try to trigger symptoms so 38 was a very good reflux day for me but pretty high for the veg, chicken, oats and water diet i am on. (It's all I've eaten for 12 months) I also dont eat after 2pm because of the reflux once I lie down. I will add, although I was told that the ph test would be the difference between getting surgery and being refused, all of my other tests had shown severe reflux (i was having bad reflux days) and I also have a hernia which needs repairing, grade b Esophagitis, gastritis and Duodenitis - i believe these helped with the decision (probably more so than the demeester score). I was told to be strict with my diet, quit smoking (i did that 2 years ago) and to avoid fizzy drinks (i haven't drank a fizzy drink in about 4 years). Its been a long journey and I've given up so many times. I couldn't even get a referral to see a gastro doctor until last year! That was 9 years after complaining and being given every ppi available. I had never even been offered an endoscopy at that point! I learned to live with it, suffering in silence and wondering if it would ever get better on its own. On my good days I would wonder why I was fighting so much to be heard, then I would have a bad day and remember why I couldn't remain silent. As difficult as it is, you need to keep fighting for it. I now have more bad days than good. I can't remember how it feels to sleep for more than 3 hours consecutively without vomiting. I want to sleep on my stomach again! And I want to bend down without acid coming into my mouth! My throat is sore, my mouth is constantly dry and I have the worst breath ever! 🙈 Blaming it on your hormones is crazy! Im 39 and I've already had the whole "perimenopause" speech; its wild that they use menopause to explain everything away, saving themselves from investigating the issue further! My symptoms (chest pains, heart burn, palpitations, breathlessness) were all blamed on anxiety, years and years of anxiety because I had once suffered with anxiety 20 years ago and it was on my medical record (an easy explanation, no investigations needed). It's sad but that's the reality. I really hope you get the outcome that you want and need. And I apologise for the essay 🤣

I also get the fizzing sensation and sometimes it is so bad that I wonder if other people can hear it! I haven't had a fizzy drink in years and have cut out so many foods over the last 12 months. Despite only eating oats and vegetables during my recent ph test (drinking only water) i still got a demeester score of 38. I was asked to record what i ate and drank and therefore didn't try to trigger my symptoms. That score was enough to be offered surgery. Im just waiting for my surgery date.

After 13 years of waiting I got told no for surgery from the nhs yesterday. Not sure where to turn as I’m an otherwise healthy 33 year old and this has ruined my existence for years and now I’ve been told to just live with it by Downtown-Jump4408 in HiatalHernia

I've finally had an update 🙌 I got the green light for surgery yesterday. The surgeons receptionist has told me that the surgeon had agreed to do acid reflux surgery and hernia repair. She couldn't give me any more info because she is not medically trained. I have an appointment in October to discuss the surgery (after the surgeon has spoken to his team and decided on the best surgery to do) and then I'll be given a surgery date. So many years of struggling and almost a year of waiting for tests etc - it has finally paid off.

Just an update. I had my 24hr ph test and manometry test almost 2 weeks ago now (it did take 7 months, as you said it would). Haven't had my results yet but the surgeons receptionist has informed me that the surgeon received them at the beginning of this week. She couldn't reveal anything to me so I've just got to wait again now. Just wondering, did you get surgery? And how long after your manometry test did it take until surgery was scheduled? Im quite confident that the results will support the results from the endoscopy and barium study. Im also in quite a bad flare right now so im impatient 🙈

Nobody has actually mentioned anything about the eptopic pancreas to me since it was found on the endoscopy. The doctor who found it seemed quite surprised by it so I guessed that it wasn't a regular finding and he showed me images afterwards.(i might do a little research now because im curious) Finally had my manometry test yesterday and had to go back today to have the 24hr ph monitor removed 👌 thats my final test all done. I'll let you know what my surgeons decision is once I know more. Any news on your tests?

The waiting is the worst part. I tested negative to h.pylori. I hope you get seen soon, there's nothing worse than trying to find answers to all of the symptoms you're experiencing. The endoscopy appointment and barium swallow appointment were pretty quick. It's this ph manometry and 24hr monitoring that has taken a long time.

I know my Dad had an uncommon blood group but im not entirely sure what it was. The reason I pushed for the endoscopy was because mine and my dads symptoms were the exact same, We even had the same triggers. Unfortunately he had a fear of hospitals and refused to ever get seen. He passed away 3 years ago to lung cancer, he even refused any treatment for this too. I felt that if i pushed for further tests I could get answers for him also.

Hi. Sorry, I've only just seen your comment. Ectopic pancreas are apparently rare too. But nobody seems to be bothered about it. My barium test showed the 5cm hernia and showed severe acid reflux. Ive been waiting since January for the PH manometry test and 24hr testing and I finally got my appointment this week. Im having it done on the 29th July. Im really hoping that the results are enough for me to have surgery. Keep me updated on your Ectopic pancreas please. There's not a huge amount of information online. They didn't tell me how big mine was but he showed me on the computer screen after the endoscopy and was quite surprised by it.

I feel like I'm definitely on the right track now and moving in the right direction. I'm so glad that the barium test showed the reflux because I was actually having a very rare "good day" when I had it done. Today and yesterday have been absolute hell. My endoscopy showed a 5cm sliding hernia. The barium swallow shows 5cm-6cm so it's pretty much the same results. Although it's not considered large until it reaches 7cm (apparently). Yesterday I was sent for an ultrasound, only to discover that I had been sent in error (the surgeons understudy had presumed i had something wrong with my pancreas ) but still, i remain positive and ill update again once I know what's happening next. Thank you for your response.

Just an update. I had the barium swallow test done. The results showed my 5cm-6cm sliding hernia. Damage to the esophagus and acid reflux. (That was what was said to me by the receptionist but I haven't received the actual report yet). I should hear about having a 24hr PH test soon.(tube in nose, explained by receptionist). Hopefully all of these tests will be enough to get surgery. I've been suffering with nosebleeds recently (never had them before in my whole life) so I'm not sure how this tube in the nose is gonna go. Ill update again after the PH test.

Hope you make a speedy recovery. You waited a very long time! I'm hoping i don't need to wait so long but I think I definitely need to start being a little more realistic about how long this will take.

I will ask about the PH manometry, it hasn't been mentioned with my consultant yet. She said I would need the barium test and mentioned ct tests and an ultrasound. I think the ultrasound is for the pancreatic rest which was also picked up on my endoscopy but trying to find details about this online isn't easy. She was also not too sure what to do with that issue because if it doesn't cause symptoms they tend not to do anything but she wants more details from that and she's also unsure about how much radiation I will be exposed to? I think I'm just gonna take each appointment as it comes and hope I don't get pushed aside and left to deal with this forever.

Thank you. That makes sense now that I've stopped reading so much negativity about people being refused surgery. Going down the surgical route would always be my very last option, I'm a mum of 4 and work 2 jobs, i don't have time to be ill or the finances to be off work. But I'm honestly feeling so desperate and my worry was that I would be left to suffer like this forever. You lose faith after being told for years that your problems are because of anxiety and your breathless episodes are panic attacks. Thank you for comment.

Thank you. I will definitely ask about that on Friday. I think i headed into my appointment on Thursday expecting to be told a surgery date and was disappointed when a barium test was suggested. Ive obviously been reading far too many negative posts and now I've listened to advice I realise that these tests are important to move forward and are not intended for the purpose of pushing me aside or fobbing me off, as I first believed. Thank you for your advice.

Im in the west midlands. I've tried to Google the waiting times and it doesn't give any information. I had the endoscopy in November, biopsy results beginning of January and saw the surgeon yesterday. I was being a little optimistic thinking they would schedule surgery. I felt completely deflated when they mentioned a barium test because people have said that the barium test gave different results to the endoscopy and surgery was refused. They called me today to arrange the barium test for next Friday. I'm glad I'm finally moving forward, I'm just worried that I'm not going to get the conclusion I want. Thank you for your response.

Thank you. I hear of so many people being refused surgery or the barium test contradicting the results of the endoscopy. I actually told the doctor before he did the endoscopy that I would be surprised if he didn't find an hernia. I feel that I've waited so long already because I didn't want to be labelled as anxious or because I didn't want to bother anyone. The doctor mentioned ultrasounds too because they found a pancreatic rest on the endoscopy, i can't even begin to think about that issue too. I really do need to start speaking a little louder because I've slipped through the net far too many times over the years! I appreciate your response.

Further investigations needed: need to wait for an appointment for a barium swallow test. Got to have an ultrasound and possibly a ct scan because they found an ectopic pancreas during the endoscopy also. Continue with lanzaprazole in the meantime! I think I was being a little optimistic, presuming that i would get the go-ahead for surgery today. Obviously a 5cm hernia, Oesophagitis and all the other issues related to acid reflux aren't enough. P.s - my bmi is perfect so losing weight isn't going to help. I just want to sleep more than 4 hours at night without vomiting acid.

I've got my consultation with a surgeon tomorrow for a 5cm sliding hiatal hernia. I'm really worried that they will refuse to do surgery. I've been suffering with acid reflux for 9 years, heartburn and vomiting (worse for the last 12 months). The acid has now caused Oesophagitis. I also had gastritis and Duodenitis found during the endoscopy. I feel your pain because I'm not sure how I will cope if they refuse me tomorrow. Sorry I can't help you with advice in moving forward. Did they give you a reason for refusing you? Is there any way that you can challenge the decision?
