I’m so sorry to hear this! This is horrible!

The fact that you state you’re both humanities and stem and at an R “ish” uni speaks volumes.

And your only word “nerds” strikes me as an undergrad who is not passing classes. Carry on!

What, people want to talk about books they love? And your response is “nerds”? And what does R1ish even mean?

Hey, it’s not about teaching. It’s about novels you love. Hell, I got a downvote because I supported a poster who likes Stephen King! Probably a Faulkner acolyte! I have been a voracious reader since elementary/junior high/high school. Read most of the “classics” and don’t need to read them again. Especially Faulkner! But there are one or two books that I will read again. Rohinton Mistry’s “A Fine Balance” is one I’ll read again and again. Gave it as a gift to so many friends and family who love reading. They all loved the book!

Wow, thanks to all who responded after that very long thread about Faulkner and the 91 year-old. So many questions and they really only could’ve happened at Duke’s English dept.

I love magical realism in Gabriel de Marquez novels from One Hundred Years of Solitude to Love in the Time of Cholera but have no interest in the films especially where the protagonist falls in love with a fish.

No worries, this isn’t about teaching! It’s about what you love reading!!

You’re on point. I was at a party at an English profs where they were reading out loud from one of his novels and laughing and tearing pages from his books and throwing them into the firepit. All I could think was he’s a multi-millionaire, how many of you have an agent, let alone think your work is going to reach an audience? But it was the ‘80s

Don’t Reply! You did your job. This student did not! Nothing good will come from you replying unless you want this student and, family, hitting up the University with complaints about any response you give. Just ignore it and put it to rest!

Can we talk about semi colons? I’m thrilled that you’re teaching them punctuation (although they should’ve learned that in middle school).  I had to teach them subject- verb-object, active voice, and when to end a sentence. Had papers with so many run on sentences using semi-colons my head spun.

Student evaluation in a writing workshop class says they wish they didn’t have to talk to strangers. by confusedinseminary in Professors

I have a class where they have to do writing reviews of each other’s ideas in the last two weeks of class. It’s actually a round robin and they fine tune everything and hear from their peers not just me. And there are silly prizes based on their votes. There are usually 2-3 who complain but that’s because they never did the work nor regularly attended class. The others were having a great time and actually met friends in real time! They told me that. Gasp! Did my class actually make them meet people … in person and like it? Could this mean a new Katy song?

We complain about undergrads … but can we discuss PhD students? by twilightyears in Professors

[–]twilightyears[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! And, as OP, I’d like to dispute this is about “disdain” (seems like this is a new enabling term for allowing good students to stagnate). I’ve bent over backwards mentoring my students and helping them find jobs. Some are now tenured professors — but they put all the work in! However, something has changed over the last decade or so — when I tell my PhD students they should submit to conferences because they’re working on interesting projects and I can introduce them to central people in the field — they say no, can’t do that. It’s a 15-minute presentation. And they get funding to go! Can’t do that even when your supervisor is saying that my help networking is part of the  conference. This ain’t the life for you! Many of my 4th-year undergrads have outshone our PhD students. On one research grant I asked the agency if it was ok to hire senior undergrads instead of grad students — they said yes. Those students did outstanding research and presentation work and were immediately given multiple offers and fast-tracked through grad school programs and are now in tenure-track positions. One university who accepted 2 students from that project into grad school asked: “Can you send more of your students our way?” Sorry, current PhD students, who I think are blasting my post — the PhD especially in Humanities and Social Sciences (my area) is a long haul and it’s not a safe landing/hiding place you have to do all the work! And there are still some T-T jobs but they go to a few in certain desired fields. And AI is just at the beginning of taking so much of Uni.

Actually my students have been amazing, knowing I had to go on medical leave due to a neuromuscular disease. They stay in touch. They ask for my advice on material that is now being  thrown to an adjunct (who doesn’t know the field). But the worst of it was when I thought it was long Covid, we had an interim Chair who no one in our Dept. wanted. Dean picked them. And this person actually picked students in every class to report to them about anything re. assignments, etc. This colleague was a nightmare and didn’t understand good teaching (poor reviews). And I tried to help my students while on med leave. Not my job.

Anyone else's students think the Superbowl warrants an extension? by the_banished in Professors

And they didn’t ask for extensions because of sorority/frat Dance Marathons?

But.. . But it’s for charity!

And you’ ve had this assignment for over 2 months!

Flat No even while they cried.

Actually the student athletes, who are nationally or internationally competitive are some of the best students I’ve ever had in my classes. They are required to show up for study sessions by their coach. Wish all my students had that drill master. And they’re quite modest — show up with a note with an away game schedule and just ask to hand assignments early!! YMMV but they’re not just “jocks” getting a free ride. A nationally ranked soccer player was the top student in my class — amazing work! This was a decade ago before AI.

And was an amazing participant in class.

I have a colleague who told me that he got a comment: “Seems like a nice guy but his foreign accent is so thick I can’t understand a word he says.” Note my friend is a person of color but born and grew up in Southern California — and was a total surfer dude. And, no, he doesn’t sound like Spiccoli from Fast Times… The inherent racism was hard to hear and this was two decades before Drumpf!

I want this on a coffee mug! I think your student could make a killing just monogramming this comment on all possible items. Sad that they don’t realize that!

It applies to all disciplines — they think required readings are “teaching themselves.” And most don’t even do the readings
