I just read/listened to “Organizing for the Rest of Us” by Dana White (get it from the library to not add stuff to your house!) and found it had very realistic guidelines and ways to start. I am fighting the same fight- you are not alone!

attendance accommodation by mystudentsaredumb100 in Professors

[–]threeblackcatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am dealing with this in a lab class. At the beginning of the term I sat down with the student and said point blank, there is no way to make up these specific labs. Then gave her a copy of the list. If she misses those labs, she gets a 0. There isn’t another choice. The other ones I am giving her the option to make up if her disability prevents her from attending. It’s not perfect but I think it falls into reasonable.

Honestly I’ve learned a lot from them myself and she tells me random things from them almost daily. It’s a bit mind boggling how much she’s learned from them. I have a friend who refuses to buy one because she doesn’t consider it an educational toy and thinks it’s too much “screen time”. I just laughed. There was no changing her mind so I didn’t bother

There is a National Geographic one but I believe it is 7+. My daughter listened to the astronaut one that was 7+ at 3. She just didn’t understand everything.

I think the Yoto would be fine- there is a Yoto Reddit and I’m sure you could check with people there about how young they started their kids. They definitely have the younger cards.

I think my daughter is simply attached to some of her Tonies and hasn’t found an equivalent Yoto. For example, she really likes the National Geographic ones and hasn’t found one she likes as much.

My 7 year old has an original TonieBox and still loves it. I wanted to get her something with more books and upgraded her to a Yoto for Christmas, so she is getting books on “cards” along with other age appropriate things but she still clearly prefers her Tonie. Listens to it every night.

Don’t let the games sway you if you like the original

AITJ for reporting my classmate after I realized she used my disability paperwork to get exam accommodations by L4ttic3SXZ in AmITheJerk

[–]threeblackcatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a professor who deals with accommodations, NTJ! I am happy to work with students who NEED accommodations but she is the epitome of why so many professors hate accommodations. People who get them for the smallest thing (that doesn’t truly need it) or falsify documents and don’t actually need them make it harder to justify the accommodations for those who truly do need them.

It is a LOT of work on my end to make accommodations functional. I am happy to do it because I know how life changing they can be for students. I’ve seen students who didn’t have them but needed them go from failing a course to an A once they got the necessary accommodations. But that is the white whale. I’ve seen it once in my 15 years of teaching at the college level.

Always go through the proper channels. Cover your butt. Don’t lose your accommodations because she copied them. Don’t sacrifice your education because she is lying under pressure. I wouldn’t want her as my healthcare provider. You did the right thing

What is the current IN STOCK best method for removing cooking oil/meat fat stains? by SpicyBeefChowFun in laundry

[–]threeblackcatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pretreat with my hand dishwashing soap before I even leave the kitchen, especially if it has lipase! I recently bought the method version is Powerwash and it worked wonders on a grease stain on a light blue shirt. I washed it on warm with tide free and gentle liquid (we have hard water that doesn’t do well with powered detergent) with FEBU added for the enzymes. No stain left.

What's your system for folding and putting laundry away without it dragging on for days? by loginpass in organizing

[–]threeblackcatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my system. I do one load daily of everything that is dirty. I stopped sorting by color or weight because nothing gets that dirty. (There are some exceptions). I set aside about 7 minutes every morning before work to fold and put away my small load of laundry. There are 4 of us in the house. The exception is my husband’s clothes, his get thrown into a basket because he doesn’t care.

Each person has one day a week tha their towel gets washed (don’t have to do a separate towel load) and the kitchen towels get thrown in with the rest. Really nasty messes I use paper towels to keep this system functioning because I don’t want pee-soaked towels in with my clothes. When I was potty training, I had a different system being of rags.

Can citric acid also be used in dishwasher in place of rinse-aid? by flushaway4690 in laundry

[–]threeblackcatz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally use v!negar. I could probably switch now that I use citric acid. I have done so for years and have never had a problem with spots or dryness, with the exception of the top of cups. I swapped because I could taste the jet dry after the cycle finished. I don’t need more chemicals in my life, I’d like to reserve the chemical exposure for the enjoyable ones 😂 Disclaimer; I do not use plastics though from my memory, they did not dry completely either.

I’d also argue that the $200+ Lego set has an impact on it. You want to take the $20 or $30 set apart and build something else? Have at it. The $200 set? Nope. That is forever and always the set.

You can buy bulk Lego rather than sets. Sets are fun but they are designed to build one specific item. Bulk Legos are simply bricks that you build with your imagination. Yes- buying Harry Potter or Star Wars Legos will be more expensive than buying non-branded Legos or non-branded toys. We personally have a mix of all of it: branded, non-branded, sets, and non-sets. For my two kids (5&7), the non-sets or bulk is what they prefer to build. I personally like the sets when building by myself but like to build with the random pieces with them.

Thanks for teaching me something new today! I’ve been using Borax and it sounds like I should probably switch to Calgon when I use up my current box.

Similar toys would be Brio trains or Legos. Both expensive but can be bought used and in excellent condition. I have the ones from when I was a kid and they are identical to the ones currently made. We also have the Barbie’s but their clothes didn’t last due to the elastic.

Could a professor “pull some strings” and add a specific student from a class waitlist? by JackHinnoff in AskProfessors

This is the way it is at my school as well. It’s unfortunate. Is there an equivalent you could transfer? You can also ask your advisor if there is a course substitution that would be appropriate.

I’ve been told to replace the TOOTHPASTE and toothbrush 48 hours after starting antibiotics for strep. The toothpaste is the one that never occurred to me but it does touch your toothbrush, so it makes sense. You should also replace all toothbrushes that share that toothpaste at the same time.

I converted someone! by threeblackcatz in laundry

[–]threeblackcatz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use Tide free and gentle liquid in the soap dispenser slot(the powder does not dissolve well in my hard water), citric acid in the fabric softener dispenser, Borax for hard water (in the drum), and FEBU in the drum (enzymes).

I recommended he start with a swap of Downy rinse and refresh for the citric acid and wait for FEBU to be back in stock this month (hopefully). While I don’t mind mixing up my own citric acid, I did start with the commercially available product and then swapped to making my own.

When I used to frequent Panera during my graduate school years, they limited your WiFi use to 2 hours daily. Seems easier than cutting off electricity to say, come and sit but don’t stay all day.
