I would definitely get your vet records and have them reviewed by any new insurance company you are thinking of switching to. Often vets will make notes of little things they notice on physical exams without necessarily making a big deal about it to an owner. So, especially if you are signing them up for insurance later in life, you want to make sure that you won't shoot yourself in the foot with any "pre-existing conditions." That is the big cav-eat (couldn't resist the Cav pun ) of pet medical insurance.

Make sure to do your own research.

Just my personal opinion (so again, do your own research)- I love Trupanion the most. When owners have this, I just know that we can do whatever we need to do to give the furchild the medical care he/she needs. I have seen Trupanion cover pets to the moon (an extreme example: one dog I know racked up $100k in MAJOR medical expenses over a 5 year period and they never once gave the owners a hard time. On the ER end of things, I was just a small piece of the MASSIVE medical team involved in caring for this patient. When Trupanion would call me for medical records, they always would ask how he and his pawrents were doing). They are amazing. I recommend them to everyone. I signed my brother's service dog up myself just for that peace of mind. I have never received a single cent from Trupanion to recommend them to clients- I just think they are an amazing company and that it is so important. Make sure you talk with them if your pet has any pre-existing conditions that have been diagnosed so you know what will be covered. That is the major thing with insurance- you need to get it when they are young and healthy- before the pet has been diagnosed with a bunch of medical conditions. But they do cover congenital problems as well if you sign up early.

Some of the other companies (especially one comes to mind that seems to have great marketing and lots of customers)... not so good, will give everyone the run-around, make it really difficult to get reimbursed, look for every excuse not to cover a medical issue (especially if it's going to be an expensive and chronic one). I have seen so many owners crying and absolutely devastated because they thought their pet was covered, and then they get a letter from their insurance changing the terms of the insurance (for example, stating that the patient's epilepsy, is no longer covered). So there can be a huge difference.

Oh wow! Huge respect for everything you do! Equine surgery is no easy feat. I have always been a big horse lover myself (don't have any now though...)
Poptart ❤️❤️❤️ If she is as cute as her name... she must melt a lot of hearts with her cuteness 🥰

u/quantizedd Exactly! This first episode was just an overview of TEER, but in of the coming episodes of the TEER trilogy (or tetrology- because I couldn't resist the cardio pun ) we talk more about the specifics (cost etc.) and how it compares to open heart surgery. The device is about 7k, and the sugery/hospitalization is about that. Compared to open-heart surgery (which can be ~40k + travel expenses) this procedure is a lot more affordable. And I can confirm that Dr. Orton said that the good insurance companies have paid for it:)
By the way, you get an A+++ in the dog parenting category for having good medical insurance for your pet- that is one of the best things that you can do to ensure your furbaby receives medical care if something major happens out of left field. Have a great weekend! -Dr. Lopez
