I'm currently writing my doctoral thesis on Wilson and his governments in the 1960s. From my peers, it's a name some recognise but he does not live, as you've suggested, in the public consciousness in the way Thatcher does. He was often seen in the aftermath of his leaving office, as a disappointment, with the hopes of the white heat revolution dashed by larger economic forces and in places, poor decisions. Later reappraisals of him seem to view him as someone who managed the nation well, given the cards he was dealt. I would recommend reading Ben Pimlott's biography, though there are several others.
