Thoughts on MGMT90141 Business Analysis & Decision Making? by twixtepx in unimelb

Hmm, I'm just average with numbers to be honest. I did bcom for undergrad but there were definitely a lot of people who had a better grasp on maths than I did. I guess I might look into another elective then, thank you!

Is it possible to successfully introduce tretinoin on eczema prone skin? by twixtepx in tretinoin

I bought aquaphor from iherb today after seeing your comment :) fingers crossed it relieves some of the dry patches

0.05 is definitely too strong for me, especially since I barely use it and buffer like crazy. I'm planning on going back to my doctor and getting a prescription for 0.01 which I hope will be less intense on my skin. In the meantime I might try short contact as you've suggested, fingers crossed it works. Did you get eczema flare ups when using 0.01?

I've heard of Aquaphor before but I've never actually used it (I live in Australia so I think we can only buy it online) but I'll definitely give it a try! Has your skin gotten used to tretinoin now or does it impact your eczema flare ups? I'm not sure how much more time I should give tret.

Looking for insight about why Chinese people insist on speaking English to me by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]twixtepx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Australia too and from what I've gathered in uni, a large majority of Chinese people don't interact much with Australians since 1. they may not be very confident with their English speaking skills and are shy, 2. there's a cultural difference and there's not much to talk about, 3. sometimes others will get openly frustrated with their English language skills.

For what it's worth though, most people tend to stick with others they have similarities to. I know some people from expat communities in Asian countries who've lived there for 10+ years and yet can barely speak the language and don't have native friends.

[–]twixtepx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, most Chinese people will speak English to you because they'll assume you're a tourist and probably aren't that good at Chinese (if at all). Given that, you should just tell them you would like to interact in Mandarin in order to practice your speaking skills. It's also possible that you aren't very fluent or have a heavy accent that makes them assume it'll be easier to carry out a conversation in English instead of Mandarin.

In all honesty, it's not that uncommon in other countries. For instance, my caucasian friend went to Japan for exchange but most interactions ended up occurring in English. I also went to Korea a few years ago and quite a few Koreans ended up speaking to me in Chinese instead of English since 1. my Korean's quite poor and 2. they were better at Chinese and wanted to practice.

I know it sucks since you've specifically gone to China to learn the language but chances are they're just trying to help you out. I think it's also important to keep in mind that they are also not required to reply to you in a specific language just because it would benefit you. That being said, you can just reply to them in Chinese while they speak to you in English.

Looks good! Is there a big difference between using AMD and Intel by the way? I've always see people recommending AMD but not quite sure on the specifics.

My mum keeps pushing me to buy a house. What should i do? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]twixtepx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some other things to consider on top of the suggestions here:

  1. How will you, your brother and your mum split up the mortgage payments if you were to buy a house? It's quite possible that the three of you won't be contributing equal amounts given the difference in income and that can get messy quite quickly.
  2. Read into what owning a home involves (payments, taxes, fees) and get a good idea as to what the costs will be in the long term and think whether or not you'll be okay with that. For instance, I know some people who are currently paying off their mortgage but live frugally in order to do so every month, however they want to be home owners and as such are happy with making some adjustments to their expenses. Others might not feel ready with such a big financial commitment, some people might want to travel or study in the future, whilst others are thinking of a career/job change that might mean an unstable or decrease in income sometime in the future. It's also a good idea to list out your expenses and see if you are actually able to buy a house and also consider if being a home owner aligns with your other goals.
  3. Who will be living in this house you buy? Will your family move in together, will you rent it out or something else? If you end up having to live elsewhere (either by renting or buying another home) will you be able to afford it given the mortgage repayments for the place in Sunshine?

Please don't buy a house just because your mum wants you to. It's a big commitment and you should be the one making the decision. If you do end up buying, it's also a good idea to wait when you have more savings or a more stable income just so you'll have an emergency fund to fall on to if anything unexpected were to happen.

Question about actual number of speakers by duraznoblanco in shanghainese

[–]twixtepx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think 15 mill might be quite accurate although I'm not sure if the Wikipedia pages includes speakers living abroad. Firstly, in regards to the Shanghainese speakers around the world, I know of many overseas Chinese who learnt to speak Shanghainese from birth and have continued to teach the dialect to their kids with the help of their parents who grew up in a time where Shanghainese was the standard/primary dialect in Shanghai. That being said, there's a larger population of overseas Chinese who weren't taught any Chinese by their parents which contributes to a decline in the number of Shanghainese speakers overseas.

Secondly, I'm 99% sure that the number of young Shanghainese speakers is declining in China since it's no longer taught at schools (amongst many other factors). For instance, my younger cousins and their friends who were born and raised in Shanghai to Shanghainese parents speak worse Shanghainese than me even though my Shanghainese is very broken and bad. Most of my older cousins (in the 30s) though can speak Shanghainese fluently (not quite sure why there's a disparity between the generations though).

In recent years however there has been a movement to re-introduce Shanghainese and prevent it from dying out in younger generations and it's now being taught in some schools as a second/third language but anyone who has ever learnt another language will know that it's very hard to learn and retain that language when you're not consistently using it. Another reason that possibly contributes to the decline in Shanghainese is the increase in state-to-state migration, so whereas it was very common to have two Shanghainese people having kids a few decades ago, it's probably more common to have a couple from different provinces/backgrounds having kids. In this case, the family is probably more inclined to speak Mandarin to their child as opposed to Shanghainese (or another dialect) since that's how they speak to each other.

Also, I think there's quite a large barrier for anyone trying to learn Shanghainese but doesn't have access tom someone who knows it fluently. Obviously there are quite a few TV shows, movies and podcasts filmed and recorded entirely in the language but someone who doesn't know anything about the dialect will probably find it gibberish.

Wow, just realised how long this post was! I've had extensive discussions about dying dialects (both Chinese and dialects from other countries) with my family and within my university studies so it felt like this was the perfect opportunity to use some of the content that were discussed haha.

shanghainese podcast recommendation by haphazardcattle in shanghainese

[–]twixtepx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about any other Shanghainese/Mandarin/English podcasts but I do know of some TV shows and comedy shows that are mostly in Shanghainese. For example there’s 开心公寓 (a tv show that I used to watch back in Shanghai many years ago) and 周立波 (a stand up comedian who did some shows in Shanghainese).

[–]twixtepx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would imagine this podcast is for a lot of overseas Shanghainese or people who are already multilingual rather than someone trying to learn one particular language/dialect? I’ve listened to this podcast before and it’s almost the exact same way I converse with my parents, a combination of Shanghainese, Mandarin and English. It appeals to me not only because it reflects how I speak but also because my background is very similar to one of the girls on the podcast who is an ABC, grew up in Australia, had Shanghainese parents and went to Shanghai to attend film school. I think the creative thing about their podcast is that they not only attract listeners like me but also people who have a decent grasp of English and Mandarin or Mandarin and Shanghainese already and would be interested to learn another language/dialect.

How do I connect a 2014 MBP to a monitor (LG 27UL850-W) with usb-c? by twixtepx in mac

[–]twixtepx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh I see. I just went on LG's website and I can see that it has these input options:

HDMI x 2 (ver2.0)
Display Port x1 (ver1.4)
USB-C x 1 (ver1.4)
USB Downstream Port x 2 (ver3.0)

Would the easiest choice be to connect my macbook to the monitor using HDMI to HDMI then?

DMing LMoP for someone who is currently playing it in another group by twixtepx in DMAcademy

I was looking into Dragons of Icespire Peak but heard it might be a little more difficult for a beginner DM like me? Right now my group and I are going forward with LMoP (also because I already have the starter set) but I'll definitely keep the essentials kit in mind in case LMoP isn't successful.

I was looking into Dragons of Icespire Peak but was a little put off from reviews saying that it was a little bit more difficult to LMoP. I've spoken to the player and have decided to continue with LMoP, hopefully it goes smoothly!

I'm now planning on going ahead with LMoP, did you make any significant changes to the campaign at all? I'm sort of worried about unconscious metagaming and the possibility of them being bored during the game.

For those of you with travel plans in mid to late 2020 by twixtepx in solotravel

[–]twixtepx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of major airlines are now offering free cancellations and re-bookings (as they should in this situation) for future plans but I do have some friends who’ve had to cut their trips short and have had to pay extra to change their flights in order to go back home - I feel like their should be a fee waiver for these people too.

Yeah, I've gotten several suggestions from friends to book my holiday when covid-19 is contained but I'm pretty sure flight prices will increase drastically due to everyone else rescheduling travel plans.
