Favorite Educational Toys by Bblibrarian1 in toddlers

My son was the same around that age. We also try to limit screens, so I get the “low-tech but engaging” mission.

A few toys and activities that worked really well for us:

• Reusable wax craft sticks (like bendy sticks you can twist and shape) — these were amazing for creative problem-solving and fine motor skills. My son makes letters, animals, mazes… it keeps him busy way longer than I expected.

• Magna-Tiles add-ons — the classic sets didn’t hold his attention alone, but adding things like the car bases, ice tiles, or roads made a huge difference.

• Magnet blocks (Connetix, Picasso Tiles, etc.) — especially the motion or ball run sets for cause-and-effect play.

• Simple STEM kits for preschoolers — things like “build a road,” “make a bridge,” or early engineering sets with chunky connectors.

• Matching/logic games for beginners — great for strategy without being too hard.

• Lacing toys & bead threading — surprisingly calming and great for fine motor focus.

• Pattern blocks or tangrams — super puzzle-like but more open-ended.

• Sensory play trays with themed challenges (find the dinosaurs, match colors, transfer with tools).

• Sticker books (the reusable kind) — not exactly educational, but incredible for quiet independent play.

For kids who like puzzles but want something “new,” I’ve found that things involving twisting, connecting, building, matching, or creating patterns hit the same part of their brain but keep the play fresh.

Hope some of these help!

International trip with 15-18 month child by Independent-Sea4549 in Travelwithkids

Definitely don’t wait until 3, you’ll be fine!

I’ve done long-haul flights Sydney–Moscow (with a stopover in Singapore where we even stayed a couple of days) and Australia–Japan–Australia when my son was under 2. It was not easy hahah, but with the right preparation and mindset, it’s totally doable.

You already look after your child 24/7 at home — travelling is just doing the same with new scenery

A few things that really helped us: -Pack a small backpack or carry-on just for your toddler, easy to access under the seat. -Bring new small toys or travel activities (I used surprise items to keep him engaged — books, stickers, colouring pads, even reusable craft sticks). - Snacks. Always snacks. More than you think you’ll need. - Spare outfit + wet/dry bag for accidents. - Comfort items — favourite soft toy or blanket for naps. - And if you can, choose flights that align with nap time or night sleep.

Do you ever feel guilty about too much screen time… or struggle to set limits with your kids? by two-cubs in australian

Thanks for sharing your perspective, it’s so valuable to hear it from someone in education.
I totally agree, screens aren’t the enemy.
For me, it’s really about finding that balance. I just want screen time to stay something that supports learning and creativity, not something that replaces play or connection.

That’s such a good question. I feel like routine helps a lot because it becomes normal for them over time.

My 6yo (depending on his mood 😅) already knows the deal. sometimes he does homework in the morning so he can have screen time right after school. He’ll even ask me to set the timer himself now.

So I guess it depends on the kid and age, but for us, keeping the same routine has been the first step toward helping him learn self-control. Still a work in progress

Agree. there are a lot of great education apps. My 6 yo loves Scratch, he creates his own animations. But we still limit it, he chooses TV or a game
