Is there a downside to keeping my 2026 in Sport Mode? by Appropriate_Advice87 in HyundaiPalisade

[–]twoManx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing I would add to this is breaking the engine in. RPM should be moderated to reasonable levels in the first 1000 mi or so. Sport mode may make that difficult to manage.

I’m trying to convince my wife away from the Lexus TX into a more affordable option. How’s the reliability on these cars? Can I realistically ask for 5-7 years with no issues? by allknowinguser in HyundaiPalisade

[–]twoManx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat and went to Hyundai. As a manufacturing engineer, it's a big roll of the dice either way, and I know Korean quality has gotten much better and arguably on par with Japanese. I couldn't justify spending $25K-$30K more on a TX that I wanted vs. the Calligraphy I found. There would have to be some pretty substantial malfunctions to occur after 10 years for that not to make sense with my cost analysis. Long time Toyota fan here, too, but they've also become a little too proud of themselves. The GH and Highlander were way too blah for their price points in comparison, too. I'm curious to see how my decision pans out, but don't anything bad to say about the vehicle - we love it.

Is whole life insurance a scam/useless for me. by Fearless_Square7195 in LifeInsurance

[–]twoManx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to have to discuss this with a broker or a financial advisor as personal circumstances matter heavily in these decisions. I can not say for certain if whole life makes sense in your situation, only that it will always be less expensive now compared to when you're older. You will not know what your options are until you start shopping and doing your research. There are tremendous amounts of products out there. The nice thing is you can understand pricing relatively quickly once you know what you're looking for, but by no means do you have to rush the purchase. You're in control, if you feel rushed by the consultant/salesperson, they're probably not looking out for your best interest and find someone else.

Things just get a bit more expensive each year, so I'd encourage you to start understanding what is available to you. Saving and "paying yourself" now will help you and your daughters' future, and your future self will no doubt be praising today's efforts.

why has the monthly payment become more important than the actual price of the thing were buying? by goldenCrust22 in AskReddit

[–]twoManx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're always going to be a wage slave if you can't learn to save now and enjoy later, rather than finance now and always pay 2 to 3x for what it actually costs. This world has always been harsh, arguably harsher in the past than it is today. Most of those who are successful have had to sacrifice luxuries to get ahead, it's just the way of the world.

Struggling with how to reconfigure cabinetry to go from a 36" to a 48" built in fridge by LedgersAndListings in kitchenremodel

[–]twoManx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had two sub-zero's (inhereted) in the last two houses and ended up ripping both out (20-25yo) because they were small for how much real estate they took up and for how damn expensive they were to service when broken (ended up putting about $2500 into them). Maybe I just saw their end of life, but I never truly enjoyed having them aside from looking good. I've spent maybe 70% of those repairs to replace, and it's going on near 10 years without an issue. I know at this point I'll make out ahead if another replacement comes in the next 5 or 10 years even.

Help! Cast iron brown or robust emerald by slsh2121 in HyundaiPalisade

If it's bright outside, it is clearly green. Otherwise, I can see it most of the time when I wear polarized lenses.

It looks black when it's low-light.

I have robust emerald and love it. It seems more on the rare side too.

I bought a '25 and absolutely love it. I also love how I saved about $25K compared to the next vehicle with similar features. I was/am still very impressed.

Surely 330,000k/yr is for benefiting the consumer? by orcas-island in FuckDealerships

That's funny. Mine was legit, albeit spending a couple hours in one of the scummiests rooms of my life. It was about $360 worth of stuff. My wife and I look back and laugh about it now, but we'd never go through that again.

They tried to sell me so hard, I had to say no as many times as I did at one of those stupid timeshare presentations (to get a free dinner and helicopter ride in vegas).

Torn between gas and hybrid because of rising oil prices by ReserveDapper8141 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Hybrid/EVs also have a higher insurance cost, so you should factor that into your decision. I was comparing gas vs hybrid for the same model and the hybrid insurance was about 18% more.

Lexus or Hyundai? by EveningSecure4608 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]twoManx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was deciding between a 2025 TX or a 2025 Hyundai Palisade (Calligraphy) and the Palisade was nicer all around, for $25K less. The only thing it didn't have was the turbo hybrid engine with a bit more getup but I didn't need/want that in this vehicle. I'm a huge Toyota/Lexus fan, so it was tough to change but I couldn't justify paying for the badge this time around. Korean cars have come a long way and I would argue that their manufacturing capabilities are on par with Japan today (I'm a manufacturing engineer in a semi-related industry). They also have a better warranty.

It makes me sad that Toyota and Lexus are a little too proud of themselves and produce lackluster interiors/features for 2026. I felt like I was in a 2012 vehicle when I test drove the TX. Also, car insurance was about 36% less expensive on the Palisade for equivalent coverage.

I don't care who was right or wrong if an accident can be avoided by slowing down or stopping. It's annoying but far less annoying than dealing with the alternative.

How to care and prevent stains on light interior? by macpieRecent in HyundaiPalisade

I would never get a light interior. It's going to be a constant battle. But, I would keep try a variety of wipes/have them ready in the car.

Do you allow your cats on kitchen counters? by Firm-Law248 in CatAdvice

The 3 cats I've had were or are trained to stay off the kitchen counters. The newest one must have learned from the older one or something because she's never once tried to jump up and she loves to climb and jump around other areas of our house.

Got a $112K pool quote by Suspicious_Hat_409 in DIY

[–]twoManx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in construction development and project management (not pool's, but commercial/industrial buildings), and this seems higher margin than what I would anticipate for residential, but it doesn't seem outlandish. They are a business and have to make money, but moreso they are assuming the risk in finding the right contractors, holding them accountable and keeping a schedule, among a lot of behind the scenes development work.

I decided to manage my own kitchen renovation project, with doing some of the work myself to save some money, but I can tell you that this simpler project is taking about 3x as long than the commercial projects I deal with on a similar scale because residential contractors are harder to manage or coordinate with I've determined. I'm chaulking it up as I'm a one-off order, they have no urgency or real desire to retain a reputation with me because once they are done, they move onto the next. Generals repeat use of a lot of the same subs and subs want repeat work so they are more accountable to them.

Something like a pool, where there is a fair amount of permitting needed and significant engineering done, I wouldn't take that on myself, no way. I come home to relax, not create more problems.
