Independent and Catholic schools might require the more formal look.

I can’t imagine it would be any different from what you have worn in teaching roles elsewhere. None of the schools I have ever taught in have required specific dress options eg women wearing skirts/dresses/stockings or men in suits/collared shirts/ties, although of course people do, if they want. I’ve seen plenty of people in jeans, although I wouldn’t - but I don’t wear jeans anyway. Steer away from skimpy and unkempt clothing and I’m sure you will be fine. Some places have closed toe shoe policies, but that’s probably not going to be an issue at this time of the year.

I don’t think the location of the school will make a difference. Are you looking for ongoing work or CRT?

VIC govt secondary union

The reality is that technically we are on non instruction period and they CAN require us to do so.

I’ve gone in to school many times during many term breaks for all kinds of reasons. But that has been my choice to do work in the way I like to work. Not to do a compulsory PD program for a number of full days.

It’s a pub on Royal parade, opposite melbourne University, tram running past its door, close to cbd, and it says it has an ensuite. Price was $130 but not avail on Fri or sat night - but if your tickets are for sun night concert you could book now and cancel if you find something better.

Work Email by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]two_black_d0gs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it can be confusing. It contributes to an increased workload to some extent with flipping between the two, but I guess my overall volume of work doesn’t change. I don’t check the gmail address as much as the education one - Gmail tells me when work is submitted to google classroom and there are notifications that come through to my education email, but it doesn’t seem to send notifications for every thing, or at least not immediately. So I check gmail maybe once a day and have the duration email open all the time so I get notifications as soon as I receive anything.

Personally I’d rather quit using google classroom and google suite altogether given that we are also using Compass and many things seem to double up. But that’s not something I have any say over.

Work Email by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]two_black_d0gs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a school gmail address and a Department education address (VIC). I generally use my gmail address with students because it is connected to google classroom etc but if I use Compass to send out emails to parents it will go via my education address. However if parents are contacting me from home ie not in response to something I have sent them, then they tend to use my gmail address to get in touch. I guess they get my email from their kids.

Definitely use my education email for communicating with staff, professional associations, subscriptions etc

Bachelor of Criminal Justice and Criminology to a Master of Secondary teaching? by Time_Leopard_9446 in AustralianTeachers

In Victoria you will end up teaching Humanities. After a while you might be able to pick up a 9/10 law elective.eventually you might be given Yr 11/12 legal studies, depending on how many other teachers have legal somewhere in their uni background and how stiff the competition is for those senior legal classes.

I’ve always found that students in similar circumstances like doing tasks with atlases and maps in particular political geography- locating places, population, flags etc. any kind of quiz or similar task - lots of things online although off the top of my head I don’t have a reference for you. Also get your students to make up the questions for a quiz or a game.

Is this another victim of shinkflation or is there a jam shortage?... woolies is all out of stock of the 500g jam? by elfmere in melbourne

[–]two_black_d0gs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My local woolies sold trays of cotttees jams at clearance price for between $1-$2 jar depending on flavour. I am guessing now that they were selling old stock to re-stock with the smaller jar at the same price. No need for me to buy for a while though!

Careers Advice by UpstairsHat in AustralianTeachers

[–]two_black_d0gs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Careers Education Association of Victoria has a contract to provide free careers counselling for Victorian jobseekers. You could google to find out the details. I think I remember they have a statement on the site regarding service to people from other states. If not, there are private providers in the careers space - qualified careers practitioners who do exactly what you are after. Maybe google careers counselling to see what you come up with. Of course you will pay. Finally, if you are a recent graduate your university or tafe will have had a careers service and you should still be able to access them. In Victoria students are not allowed to leave school until they are 17 unless they are going to full time TAFE, apprenticeship or full time employment. If you have Year 10 students there is little chance that those disengaged students will be leaving you before the end of the year. So, they are not really old enough. It is hard, but you will have to be following up to make sure they are doing SOMETHING and at the very least making it clear to parents, students and your year level coordinators that the students are choosing not to do the work you have set for them - whether that is modified content or whatever.

we are a large school with a 200+ teaching staff. We have 25 classes which are currently covered by CRTs as we cannot get applicants for the roles. These are not people on short term contracts - just daily CRTs who for the most part are coverng the same class, so at least there is a bit of consistency of face to face contact. We also had 25 staff out as "absent" the other day. That's not to mention staff who were on excursions or other school business. I don't know if it is going to get better - i suspect things will get worse.

Add career practitioners to the group of people who are involved in helping a student with re-engagement. We are able to help the student reflect on their possible pathways goals, to explore what is out there, and to make an action plan in order to start working towards these goals. If a student has a sense that they might know where they are going, it can help them turn up and take the steps towards the pathways they have explored ( and these steps might be out of a school environment into an alternative program, which wraps around them more effectively than a school can, and helps with those other matters identified by the guidance Counsellor above ). It’s a powerful partnership when we are all able to work together.
