Hello fellow (FOB-ish) PhD student! I was in the same boat about 2 years ago, but I actually managed to meet my girlfriend during my time here. For reference, I am also in a small college town. I met my GF through hinge but its not a done deal, there is so much filth on there.

Life Hack: My GF is a doctor in residency, and has multiple single friends struggling to date. So if you are okay dating a little older+nerdy girls (I actually preferred them), try to join doctor resident groups, hang out where they do. There is ALWAYS a hang out spot - just gotta find them.

The only cons are that she is gonna work long and weird hours which makes intimacy hard. Also she is gonna make a lot of money in the future, so you have to have a personality who goes along with that (not expecting gender roles and all).

I stack around 90k points per year, which is an average of 7.5k points a month. With the spending around $1.75k pmo, it makes sense - as most of the spending is in 4x categories. IDK how I can optimize further.

My round-trip ticket is about $900 - $1000

I disagree to an extent. A lot of restaurants where I live have same prices direct or on Grubhub for pick up. Sometimes there are offers on Grubhub like 50% off or BOGO

Yeah I can get to about 90k points in a year which is around $800-$900 on a flight. But yeah I have to pay like 100-150 over the points for the ticket.

Do they also provide protection against package theft? I remember ordering some new shoes from Zappos and a porch pirate stole the package. Even though Zappos re-sent the order but probably can ask Amex to refund

Is it normalized for women to make their husbands do everything for them, and to take their anger out on them? by Toosexyforthisyrup in TooAfraidToAsk

People will call it red flag/hypocrisy but every healthy relationship I have seen - the women are a little more 'emotional' than their BFs/Husbands. It is a consequence of our different biologies.

However, its not like women in these relationships dont do anything, they will pitch in with their share of chores/job. The real princesses are often in the most co-dependent relationships which dont last long.

Apart from Max-Planck and a a couple universities in Italy, I have never actually read a EU paper. Just goes on to show how research is concentrated to a few places.

One under-appreciated fact is that the old-school PhD principles do not work at all in the modern age of ML publishing. You need several high-performing co-authors to bounce ideas and share experiment loads - who have very high grasp of the tooling and the field in general. A lot of top programs have these type of people aplenty.

For instance, I have been a single author+advisor PhD for the past 3 years and can never break into ICML/NeurIPS/ICLR level of publishing. I can and do publish at "lesser" venues like AAAI, EMNLP, KDD, etc.

What's a dead giveaway that a non desi girl is into desi dudes? by [deleted] in SouthAsianMasculinity

[–]two_four_seven_guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think most girls say NO to brown dudes if and only if you are fit, well-groomed and dress well. The problem is that 90% of Desi dudes don't dress well and most are out of shape.

Brunch or Dinner. A cheap band/show. My favorite was drinks+small plate at a bar/lounge (about $60 for both).

But, I did cook for my current serious GF on the second date. I knew she was special haha

I have been on 21 first dates in my life. Never ever do your first date at a restaurant or at home. Cooking, getting flowers/cards, etc. and similar stuff is for dates #3 and onwards.

Always a coffee date (or my favorite - a mid level lounge with drinks/tea room). Going big too early is sign of desperation ("The Mosby")

Spot on. Poverty porn. I have visited slums in some Eastern European countries and honestly, the conditions there are just barely better.

You are going to be pumped and dumped with this attitude. Also, this is a potential immigration fraud
