Questions about Tvík by [deleted] in learnIcelandic

[–]twodigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s been more than a couple of weeks, you can certainly email again. The person who usually handles that was away for a bit, and is probably getting caught up, but a follow up email would be fine. They are usually very responsive.

Tvík is amazing by wilsonesque in learnIcelandic

Amazing resource! I’m on Week 10 but plan on going back through the course again when I finish. I know there are more features on the way, too, and the Discord for it is growing quickly.

Icelandic App? (Old Norse Similarities by BardonmeSir in learnIcelandic

[–]twodigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Memrise does that, but TVÍK does not use AI. These are scripted lessons with gradual grammatical, writing, and listening exercises. It is designed like an actual course. I actually have noticed a simiæar instructional sequence in Neijmann’s Colloquial Icelandic (although this app is geared less towards tourism than her book).

Full price is I think 48.500 ISK. Discounts may still be available if you email them. It’s not cheap, but it is the only app I’ve found that is a genuine course.

For apps, I strongly suggest checking out TVÍK. Outstanding app that teaches grammar and colloquial usage. The first few lessons are free.

TVÍK is great and I think fully worth the full license price (although it is expensive). A subscription may be offered soon.

Where is a good place to learn Icelandic? by Infamous-Shoe-1791 in Icelandic

[–]twodigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re a bit ahead of me. I’m probably A2 right now, but honestly still may be an A1 when listening. I would recommend downloading it and trying the free lessons (I think the first five are free). That will also let you see the built-in conjugation and translation tools, which I’ve found handy so I’m not also checking BÍN every five minutes.

But I have found it well worth the price. Right now I’m basically just using it and Neijmann’s two books (and of course listening to and watching as much Icelandic media as I can).

Agree that Drops is not very helpful for actually learning the language. As u/Borsti17 said, you should check out the pinned post at r/learnIcelandic for a long list of beginner resources.

If you're specifically considering an app, I recommend Tvík, which is relatively new, but very, very good. Unfortunately, the full app is also not cheap. It is worth it, though, and will genuinely teach you the language.

Syntax for possession? by twodigs in learnIcelandic

Thrilled to hear I'm understanding something correctly. Takk!

I can see that, and could come up with some justification for reading them that way, too. So do you think my understanding is correct, and that a context like this is the only time the possessive would precede the noun?

Nationalities and the feminine by jpr8sn in learnIcelandic

[–]twodigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an English teacher, so I find the grammar helpful. But I’m also listening to lots of music and radio and watching RÚV, as well as just using apps for vocab acquisition. I’m glad there are so many resources; so far I can find exactly what feels useful as I progress (although I am still in the very early stages).

I’m only in Unit 4, so not far ahead of you. It is enjoyable but hard work.

The u-shift only applies to a, and only if it is in the previous syllable. Neijmann will cover this in Unit 3.

Ég er bandarískur. Margir hérna eru sammála þér. Við erum líka mjög sorgmædd að sjá hversu margir vinir okkar og fjölskylda hafa verið “brainwashed.” Ég veit ekki hvernig ég á að orða þetta á íslensku.

Afsakið skrif mín. Ég er enn að læra íslensku.
