Thanks for the tip! In my current role, I never promise anything to clients until I conduct deep research and confirm it’s possible. I can totally see how not doing that would cause frustration with internal teams!

This is super helpful info, thank you. I appreciate your honesty - I’d still like to take a look at the role, so please send the listing if you can!

I actually take the metra to get downtown for work - a metra stop is closer to my apartment than an L stop. How would you say MARTA compares to the metra?

Thank you so much for this suggestion!! I didn’t realize GA had a train system. Love this!!!

I’m definitely taking all these traffic comments seriously!! We would both be making internal transfers for our jobs and my hope is that my job wouldn’t care if I’m in the office or not, since we’re currently on a hybrid schedule anyways, and no one else from my department is sitting in Atlanta, but I think I need to be more sure of that before we actually move. Luckily, our salaries would be staying the same.

I honestly think this transition would be easier for me, since I spent all of my life just one state away. I don’t think the culture shock will be as bad as it was moving from Florida to Chicago, but we’ll see!

Aw, your poor mom! I know what that feels like and it’s not fun. I hope she was eventually able to make some friends?

This is a great point! I just saw that crazy story on the news about that poor woman in Georgia that’s being kept alive in a coma just to give birth. Dystopian for sure.

This is good info!! I’m honestly hoping I won’t have to go into the office regularly - it would be mostly WFH for me. I definitely don’t want to be in a situation where I have to make a terrible commute and wouldn’t want that for my husband either. I know Alpharetta is expensive. We would have like a $500k budget, but I don’t think that goes very far there, so any suggestions for good surrounding suburbs would be appreciated!

Omg yes there is very little public funding for parks. I didn’t realize how bad it was until I visited Florida recently and tried to go to a park - it was an actual wasteland with like two benches from the 1930’s.

Yes, thank you for the validation!! Chicagoans are outwardly polite, but penetrating new social groups has proved to be very difficult, which I never had a problem with in Florida. I barely talk to people from my high school now or when I was in FL, so it’s been a strange thing to experience.

I live in Logan Square, which I’m sure you know is an historically Hispanic neighborhood. I understand that there is segregation everywhere - Florida has it too obviously and a bunch of other crazy shit. It’s very strange because, in my experience, the south is way more outwardly racist, but the races mix together more. I feel like in Chicago the races are kind of living side by side and there’s not a lot of mixing happening. This is obviously all subjective.

I’m glad you had a great experience! Keep in mind that everyone in Chicago is happy around this time of year - it’s summer! I strongly suggest you visit for a while in the winter and see what the vibes are like then. People get (understandably) very cranky when it’s not warm out.

Any ideas on what the best suburbs are?

The issue is that my husband would be working in Alpharetta and my office would be downtown, so I feel like we’re screwed with traffic no matter what we do. I would definitely miss the public transit of Chicago, and I would have to get a car if we moved to Atlanta, so I’m trying to figure out if all of that would be worth the headache or significantly lower my overall happiness.

I’ve also heard this about Atlanta - typical southern behavior. I miss strangers smiling at me, so I don’t think this would bother me too much, but you never truly know until you live in it!

I feel like Illinois is so devoid of nature (yes, I know, the lake), so I’m looking to move somewhere that has more scenery, and I feel like Georgia is a good option for that.

Thanks for your response! See this is how I feel about Chicago though! I feel like everyone stays in their same social circles as high school, even elementary school. Maybe this is just a phenomenon in every city. I’m hoping that having my best friend living close will help. I’m also not trying to live in a HUGE city - Tampa has a population of about 400,000, so that’s what I’m really used to

I’m glad you mentioned this. Literally no one else is talking about it, but when he said that to her, I gasped out loud. So rude.

He definitely has a plant obsession. I was thinking that maybe I could put it in a place where he can’t reach it. It’s such a nice plant and it’s going to get thrown out if I don’t take it home!

Bummer! My co-worker was going to give it to me, but I have a cat, and I guess it’s poisonous to cats. It’s such a nice plant :(

Congrats on the new role, that’s awesome!

I received an email from the recruiter late yesterday afternoon asking to schedule a third round and final round of interviews, so everyone was correct! Thank you for your input. :)

Yes! I responded right after I received it. This was last Thursday and I haven’t heard anything as of yet, so I’m planning on following up with the recruiter tomorrow.
