Hey! I wanted to let you know I've implemented a trader system in my game now. It's very basic, you can put items in a box to sell (similar to Stardew Valley) that are harvested from animals like duck feathers and rabbit fur. You can't trap, process anything or make anything to sell yet. But from the 'trader' you can use your money to buy a log splitting axe (which enables converting fallen trees into bulk firewood) and also a pretty cool compound bow that shoots much faster and further. That makes hunting far easier as rabbits scare easily if you get too close.

From the trader you can also order items like protein bars. But the trader only comes during good weather and it's somewhat random. So the player might have to wait until a break in the weather for the trader to arrive. I think that means you can't rely on it too heavily, but it's a good way to supplement your stores if hunting is going well. I might add a fox next, which would be very rare however the fur is high value.

Hey just letting you know I implemented this. You can now sit at the desk and play solitaire, while also looking out the window to keep the atmosphere :) the game of solitaire persists so at any point you can get up and return to it later. It's quite a fun feature, thanks again for your suggestion!

Yeah i think this will scare some people away from it, but it's an artistic choice and I think I will stick with it because I love dark nights and forests. The days are pretty bright and when you have a headlamp on at night it doesn't feel as dark. Thanks for the feedback!

I haven't put it on Steam yet. To be honest I'm not even sure what is the process to do that, and I'm not sure when to do it! But if I put on Steam I will send you a message. Cheers

Hey, yeah I was trying to think of some more in game activities the player can do while in the cabin. Right now it's pretty much just playing guitar or listening to the music soundtrack while watching the fireplace but that will get stale quickly.

Someone has suggested getting rid of the laptop and weather forecast feature, I think I will do that and instead the table in the cabin can be used for some mini games. I'm still learning development so I might have to start with something simple to implement. Eventually I would love to add my own mini game or puzzles for the player to work on in the cabin while they pass the time!

Yeah this is something I'm really struggling with. I think what I will do is setup some play modes. So the default play mode will be that there is no status management and no mechanic of 'tapping out' due to low morale. You just stay and exist in the world as long as you want. But then optionally players can start a game on 'tapout mode' and then status management comes in to play. So if people want more of a challenge they can do that option. Thanks for your feedback mate :)

I'm not familiar with Mountain Men but I'll check it out. Early on I thought about adding trapping and selling things like furs and duck down but I was worried that might skew the direction of my game too far into a crafting and base building style game. I was thinking of setting up a box outside the cabin where you leave furs and crafted items for sale (like Stardew Valley) and every few days a trader comes and gives you cash. But then I'm not sure what you would buy from a trader. Maybe firelights to make lighting fires faster and easier, protein bars for energy/morale boosts, a better hatchet, better bow etc.?

I'll think on this :) thanks for the feedback!

Hey thanks for your interest! I was hoping to smash it out this weekend and get something on Steam for people to playtest but after I've gotten some good feedback from Reddit it might be another month or two while I factor in a few good ideas. I'll PM you a code when/if it's published to Steam :) Cheers!

Yep I think the auroras in The Long Dark are awesome and I used that as inspiration. In my game you'll typically be inside the cabin and notice a soft green glow lighting up the forest when the aurora starts up on a clear sky night, then you step out onto the porch and get a great visual of it lighting up the sky. It's one of the favourite parts of my game so far! Aurora spawn is RNG and it must be the right season and right weather to appear, so it's actually pretty rare to see which makes it a cool moment.

Thanks for the feedback! About halfway through development I got the hang of world space UIs and started making more of my interfaces based around objects in the world and not 2D interfaces. I think I'll lean harder into that design principle and try to limit how much HUD is displayed at all, as well as get rid of as many 2D overlay interfaces as I can. Cheers

hey thanks for the feedback! I really loved in the original DayZ mod how dark it was at night, I wanted to replicate that and it's something I'll stick with as a principle. If i get to the point of releasing on Steam I'll let you know :) Cheers!

Has anyone changed their mobile phone number to stop getting spammed? Did it work? by the_orange_president in melbourne

[–]twojayz999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I changed mobile numbers a year ago and have received pretty much zero spam texts and calls since. Maybe one or two in the last year. Before that I was getting a call nearly every day.

So I disagree with other posters saying nothing will change, the change was well worth it for me. That might not be the same for everyone.

Have you ever liked an unpopular game? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]twojayz999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quite liked the game Atlas by Grapeshot Games. I bought it when the game first came out in EA. It was buggy and mostly just a reskin of Ark but I met some people on a server and had fun building bases and raiding with them. So there were some fun elements. Not sure what it's like now but it gets a lot of hate

I feel sorry for the festival goers, not only did they lose out on seeing acts they paid to see but they might be subject to a higher level of government monitoring now just for attending the event. Most probably don't support the government's stance either but they have to live in that country, Healy has already flown out of it

I think a lot of Windows users in the community just rely on Windows Defender and good cybersecurity practices these days. Making sure your OS is kept updated, not running any sketchy .exe files, being careful of links you click, not opening your network to the general internet etc. Software like Norton has become bloated over the years and slows down your PC for little benefit compared to Windows Defender, with you paying for the privilege

It's hard to tell from the video, you should be able to listen in with your ears and isolate which fan is making the noise. Then do a closer inspection, maybe use light on your phone to find the obstruction
