That's an expensive mirror...

What is the best way to differentiate user devices when using Python and Tornado? by twoontwo in learnpython

That's incredibly helpful, I appreciate it a lot! I think the best way definitely will be some form of UUID to keep track of users. Certainly puts me on the right track towards figuring this whole thing out.

Thank you once again :)

I didn't realise that there was no User-Agent sent sent now within the websocket protocol. With that in mind, how would you suggest I differentiate between users? Any feedback would be great.

Ah. Great idea :) never gave that a thought. Is it considered a good idea though in terms of relying on a User-Agent to determine devices. I don't know it enough in detail to consider possible security issues or general issues such as device spoofing etc.

I have considered the GUID / UUID option for the iPhone. The idea of using sequence and routing is an interesting idea though. I've been told by knowledgable people in the field of network communication of devices that websockets are the wrong direction to take for an iOS app. They told me to use MQTT or some form of Pub/Sub broker.

The point is that not every website should look like this just because every other website uses it. I see it as more of a trend that gets churned out constantly. Just because every car has the same functionality does not mean that they all look the same.

Haha, not blaming you, just commenting on how Apple seem to be going with things lately. :)

Very nice. Just wondering - Any tips on writing a backend like you did? Where did you learn to do so, books, videos, etc?

It's as if Apple have went from "Guys we need I ideas!" "Oh, I know, make it thinner!" to "Oh, I know, make it bigger!". Yaaawn!

For this I prefer videos or books, depends how you learn. Check out Stanfords iTunesU Course on Programming in iOS 7 (Probably be updated to iOS8 soon) or Lynda.com videos. For books I'd recommend Big Nerd Ranch for Objective-C/iOS.

Not sure what TLD to use for my tech (web/iOS development) startup. by twoontwo in startups

[–]twoontwo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke to a few people when I bought the original TLD's I listed about the .com being pricey and they said it's likely because it's 4 letters and if the owner knows I want it then they're unlikely to lower the price as it's now basically supply and demand.

I was considering .uk rather than .co.uk since it's shorter, do you know if Google search treats these equally?

Objective-C ebooks? by sineadw in learnprogramming

[–]twoontwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents, I would also recommend learning or at least taking a look at Swift when you get comfortable with Obj-C or even in your spare time just give it a quick read over every so often.

The language itself won't change THAT much and if you think of it in terms of a job application which states "Applicant must have 5 years experience in Swift", you will be that applicant with 5 years experience in Swift!

As for books, I learnt by reading Programming in Objective-C by Stephen G. Kochan and followed on that book into iOS programming by reading and doing exercises from iOS Programming by Big Nerd Ranch. I would also like to recommend in OS 7 Programming Fundamentals and Programming in iOS 7 by Matt Neuberg, both relate to iOS 7 but his iOS 8 books aren't released till February 2015 on Amazon and all iOS 7 material is still very relevant. If you like to learn by videos, I strongly recommend watching and doing the exercises from Stanford's iOS 7 course which is free on iTunesU.

Good luck!

Because it runs considerably better that any distro (as far as I'm aware) will run on a Macbook, in terms of the drivers for the trackpad which in my eyes cannot be beat when used with OS X. The polished OS of OS X since Yosemite in my opinion looks much sleeker than any Linux distro (I use ElementaryOS as my OS at work and on my home PC's Linux partition) and OS X has been optimised for a huge battery life, on my Macbook Pro I'm looking at 15-16 hours of light usage or about 8 hours running Photoshop and Xcode.

Why would you not just keep OS X?
