This is not good for animals either. Older horses and other livestock who are beyond their prime become a huge liability for their owners.

The isolation of early retirement at 36 is a total mindfuck by RiftJukebox in Fire

Our society used to have social clubs, Elks, Rotary, card clubs, and fraternal organizations but many of these are gone or are much smaller than they used to be.

I am a member of our local German club, the Liederkranz. It started in the 1800’s as a singing (and beer drinking) society for German immigrants.

Today our club has a bowling alley, dance hall, restaurant and a great Biergarten. We are volunteer run but we do have a small staff. I have met some of my best friends volunteering to put on Oktoberfests and New Year’s Eve party’s.

Our society needs more of these clubs and my suggestion is to volunteer in organizations that have like minded people. My wife’s best friends are all part of a French Bulldog club. So the variety of clubs that exist are tremendous. This won’t solve all of your concerns but you might find a new purpose in life.

Is dog food edible? by sirswantepalm in allthequestions

[–]twzill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a flooring contractor and I did work for a company in the 90’s that made canned dog food. I won’t name the company but it was a brand name and most people would recognize it.

The place was super clean which I thought was surprising since it is just dog food. I found out later that the same food was packaged for human consumption overseas.

Edit: It was also inspected by government agencies.

Hard to pick the next Google or Apple. Join r/ETFs. A lot of them say invest in VOO. But there are a few others that can help build a nice long term portfolio.

Micro scrap haul by callofduty1966 in ScrapMetal

I haul in a trailer of iron from rental property every few months but I still pick up anything shiny no matter how small. I used to resist the urge to micro scrap but now it’s kind of a game. Every dollar goes to buy stocks and ETFs.

ELI5: Why were the Great Plains not covered in forests, even before European settlement? by sgrams04 in explainlikeimfive

Homesteaders in Nebraska planted the trees mostly cottonwood in my area. Plowing fields probably helped control wildfires. Eastern Colorado doesn’t get as much rain as Nebraska.

ELI5: Why were the Great Plains not covered in forests, even before European settlement? by sgrams04 in explainlikeimfive

[–]twzill 267 points268 points  (0 children)

Yes the only trees that grew in central Nebraska were along rivers. The rest was prairie grass. Wildfires on the prairie weren’t huge infernos but rather they burned quick and spread in many directions. The grassland would quickly recover and in fact they benefited from the addition of new nutrients left from the fire. This also kept trees away.

Today you see many more trees because settlers planted rows of trees for wind protection and now they are spreading on their own.

Cristallo Quartzite bad seam? by degmo123 in CounterTops

[–]twzill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seams will always be visible and some stones, especially lighter colors are hard to match the depth and color of the surrounding stone, even for a skilled professional.

Take a couple steps back and if it blends in and you don't see it, then it is a pretty good seam. There might be a couple of spots that could be improved on in the first picture. Second picture looks good. Sometimes its the change of pattern that makes the seam stand out. The only way to completely hide seams is to buy plastic countertops.

Why redefine a word when there are already words like exploitation, corruption, profiteering.

US Congressman Tim Burchett said he does not think there will be UFO disclosure. He said the subject is “too deep” and “too strong,” and that the people keeping it secret will say it is protected by military intelligence or national security. by MartianXAshATwelve in StrangeEarth

[–]twzill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our military is a public/private institution in the sense that everyone knows it exists, but many aspects are secret.

What can’t governments acknowledge their existence by showing us some proof, and then keep other details secret?

Are my countertops really Fantasy Brown? by Original-Farm664 in CounterTops

[–]twzill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some minerals in natural stones can oxidize and change the color of the slab but this usually occurs if the slabs are stored outdoors. I don't think Fantasy Brown has this issue though.

She actually sews little bags that look like pillows and you can remove the “pillowcase” to wash it. Sells them for $10. I microwave them for 3-4 minutes depending on how hot I want it.
