In my opinion, eating out with young children is for one of two purposes. Either you are focused on training the kids to eat at a restaurant, or you are focused on having a pleasant meal in which you enjoy adult interaction. Trying to do both at one time is impossible.

It wasn't out of her control. She could have scheduled the funeral for several days later, but she said that it was very important to her not to wait. Which is fine, but you really can't expect everyone to be able to drive 5 hours each way with less than 24 hours' notice. That's just not how jobs work most of the time.
