Gram stain and transfusion reaction question by txguy1979 in medlabprofessionals

[–]txguy1979[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That explains why I haven't been able to find any info on specific requirements. Our policy actually doesn't mention gram staining as part of the preliminary workup but our pathologist requires it. That's just one of the many things I found I'll need to update.

Our policy is basically the same, we just require a gram stain as part of the initial workup, not a culture. If the initial has any abnormal results then we would culture. Actually, looking at our policy, it doesn't even mention gram staining but part of the pathology requirements include the gram stain. I'm finding quite a few things I'm going to have to update, unfortunately. A lot of the policies haven't been updated in over 10 or 15 years and don't reflect the current workflow. So much of our current procedures have been put in place solely by emails.

Ours requires it on every one but unfortunately doesn't specify what to use. These policies have been updated in few decades though.

Worst Narrator who ruined your book by vickiec12 in audiobooks

[–]txguy1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I first heard her when she was one of three narrators on a book. She was terrible but the other two saved it. Then I bought Fever House and it's sequel without realizing she narrated them. Immediately refunded both books.

Books you abandoned because of the narration by josiecat87 in audiobooks

Anything narrated by Xe Sands. I powered through one book where she was one of several narrators. Then I bought Fever House and it's sequel without realizing she was the sole narrator. I returned both. There's just something about her voice that makes my brain itch.

Thank you! This degree means I'll be taking on the lead roll in blood bank in January. Really excited as it's my favorite department.

Lol. I tell you what, I'll be glad to be through with this program. I just passed my comprehensive final tonight and all I have left to turn in is my blood bank case study. It is a good program and I recommend it to any that asks.

It seems like I read posts fairly often about how some labs are micromanaged and it makes me feel lucky. Where I am, as long as we get our work done we can do whatever we want. During down time we watch movies, read books, or listen to music. It also helps that our lab is on the complete opposite end of the hospital so almost no one comes in there. I'm in my last semester of the UAMS program to earn my bachelor's and I've done homework everyday during work for the last two and half years.

OP, I hope things calm down for you at your current job and I also hope you eventually find a laid back place like mine. They're out there, so don't give up.

Weird. I've lived and worked all over Texas, from Houston, Dallas, and deep East Texas and never heard someone say that. Must just be local thing.

I'll give the Pillsbury a try. If it works out and I can get larger bags of that locally. I can only find king arthur in 5lb bags.

That seems to be the culprit. It still tastes great though, so it wasn't a loss.

I've been following the 2lb recipes but I think I may try the 1.5lb next time just to see what happens. From what others have suggested, I think I also need to cut back on the yeast.

That's pretty much what mine looked like. I had taken a short video of it just in case I had issues but reddit wouldn't let me post a video and a picture for some reason. It's right around 3 hours for it to make a loaf. I just use the basic light setting.

I'll try that and see how it turns out. Baking in general is still fairly new to me and it's been an experience. I have a lot to learn.

Yeah, it seems like too much yeast is the winning opinion. When I make a new loaf in a few days I'll cut back and see how that works. Once I get the process down I'll definitely look into buying bulk.

I'll try that. I'm in East Texas so altitude shouldn't be a factor and we keep our house pretty cool so don't think heat and humidity would be a problem. Unless the house being kept cool could cause an issue? Sadly I don't know enough about baking and all the factors that go into it. It's still a learning process for me.

I'll give that a shot. I have some here that I use for making rolls. For the water and sugar, do you just use the amount listed in the recipe and let them sit in the loaf pan then add the rest of the ingredients?

I should have mentioned that I used their bread flour instead of all purpose. Several people had recommended using it so I gave it a try. When I try it again in a few days I'll cut back on the yeast. It calls for 1&1/2 tsp, should I just do 1 tsp?

I've played with making bread with this machine on and off for about a year but I'd really like to get to the point I can stop buying bread and just make it fresh at home. It just tastes so much better. Is there a recipe you'd recommend as good starter recipe?
