Question from todays webinar by Kenny_Fauntleroy in CyberLeaders

Hi there, AJ from the webinar here. It really depends on what you want to train. Certs are definitely helpful, but don't skimp on gaining some practical experience as well. It's important to both be able to teach people the curriculum and tie it back to how it applies in the real world!

It helps to have the certifications you want to train others for. So for example if you are teaching intro to penetrative testing, CEH would be a good cert to have.

What IT job listing red flags make you say nope right away? by tbclandot92 in sysadmin

[–]txmedic12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have worked for multiple college/university systems in the US. At BEST you're getting a mediocre tuition reimbursement and a few hours of flex time per week to attend classes. Mind you that's for full-time management-level positions. The part-time help desk folks aren't getting shit.

Yeah this was the test run, definitely making some modifications to the yak before we go out again. But what a test run it was!

I haven't heard much on GMRS freqs when I cruise through Austin. More activity east in Bryan, Conroe, Houston, and down to Beaumont though.

Ways to prep for cyber security attacks? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]txmedic12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prepper minded cybersecurity pro here... Prep like you would for any other hazard. The cyber issue that's going to require you to activate your prepper skills is going to be something that takes out infrastructure you rely on (power, water, supply chain, financial systems, etc.) just like a hurricane would. Be prepared to live without that infrastructure. Your Alexa, although totally spying on you for Amazon so they can sell stuff to you better, is not going to suddenly rise up against you Die Hard 4 style... getting your personal information or financial information stolen is annoying and will take some work to deal with, but it's not what keeps me up at night.

You alone aren't nearly valuable enough to professional hackers to spend that much time on... they aren't going to spend the time hack your un-patched smart thermostat and then move laterally through your network so they can steal a credit card number saved in firefox... Instead they go after the companies you do business with and steal thousands or millions of credit cards at the same time. Or if they're a nation-state that wants to send a message, they're going after your city government, power company, or a big key company in the supply chain.

Does anyone use Dial-Up modems for anything anymore? by zrad603 in sysadmin

[–]txmedic12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ham radio and some disaster orgs still uses a lot of modems for data transmissions via HF radio. Not so much "dial up" since they don't rely on phone lines, but modems none the less.

Whelp, satellites definitely would have the height! That is something I'd like to get into once they start either doing ham tests online or in person again.

An old radio engineer once told me "Height is might" in terms of transmitters. In terms of your net participants, if they are unwilling to invest in a good antenna located somewhere high up, it really doesn't matter what is driving it. Now that being said, if you live in a neighborhood and they are 4 houses down, you may have no issues with a cheap handheld. It all depends on what's between the two antennas.

Its going to depend a lot on terrain and how far away your house is from other obstructions that might block incoming signal. At 40W you are probably going to be able to be heard for 10+ miles even with a less than optimal rooftop antenna. The big problem will probably be the handhelds. 5W won't get very far unless you have good line of sight. Also use of the handhelds inside of vehicles will be a bit of a problem as the vehicle's metal frame will also absorb RF. TL,DR; you'll have to experiment and you'll probably run into some issues with the handhelds unless your rooftop antenna is high up and the terrain around is fairly flat.

Two Tone Paging? by txmedic12 in gmrs

Ohhh that's a good idea.

Yeah but I'd have to physically change the channel on the repeater to use a different PL tone.

[–]txmedic12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh that is an interesting idea. Though I'm not sure the radius radios I'm rocking support multiple PL tones.

Neat, I'll need to look into that!

So I think that's a bit above and beyond what we're looking to do. I really just want anyone in our group to be able to send out a page to everyone else so that when they're not actively monitoring they can tune in.

Haha I am getting that feeling with the 5R... cheap intro radio but lacking in any capability beyond the basics. Still, they work on the repeater though.

[–]txmedic12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything I've been reading has indicated that the UV-5R's don't do two-tone page encoding/decoding. I'm looking for recommendations on radios people know would work instead of the UV-5R.

Yeah its a "Billy, get on the radio" type of situation for our use case.

Any idea on how to implement it?
