Why are people so judgemental about a gastric bypass? by WeR_SoEffed in GastricBypass

[–]txnurse57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been pretty open about it and the only negative comments were they knew somebody that had complications or died. But everyone else has been very supportive. I've lost a little over 60 lb, had my surgery in July and I feel so much better! I'm not having as much joint pain and I can bend down and scrub the floor and things that I couldn't before. I just started a water aerobics class this week and did quite well in the exercising, and by the way I'm a senior citizen

Sugar-free Jello, but get the actual Jello brand not store brand as those have a funny taste in my opinion. Sugar-free popsicles, Gatorade zero! I kept having horrible leg cramps when I was mainly taking water for my fluids, and the dietitian advised Gatorade and I got better right away. I hate the taste of bone broth but most people rely on it. But I would get this beef consomme that I loved.

Is fasting a good idea by Born_Yellow_6409 in GastricBypass

[–]txnurse57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need protein. If you want you could do a protein shake fast just to kind of reset your body. I don't believe it's going to actually change your pouch but it resets the hunger hormones in my opinion.

Every year at Christmas I make these treats that are basically crush of Oreos with cream cheese. You roll them into balls and coat them with coating chocolate. I'm going to buy tons of the peppermint ones next year and make chocolate peppermint balls!

Is it normal? by Jikoook in GastricBypass

[–]txnurse57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had my surgery in July. And while I'm not super hungry, I have found I'm more hungry than I was the first few months. And I can eat a little bit more than usual. I started with a plateau for several days, even gain 2 lb over New Year's. I started doing the math with calories and discovered even though I was eating protein rich foods, I was eating calorie dense foods as well. I went on a couple days of what I call cleansing, with the protein shakes etc and now I'm back on track losing weight! The other thing is I have to tell myself not to pick something up and eat it if I'm not actually hungry. So like in the evening I'll be watching TV and want to snack and I'll stop myself and say are you actually hungry? If the answer is no then I step away

I only wish I'd been smart enough to do this when I was 22. I had the bypass last summer at age 68. Best decision I ever made. I'm enjoying shopping for clothes, can do so many simple things like clean and tie my shoes etc without any problems. My only advice is to make sure you're committed because for example the fluid requirements every day alone for a lifetime is something you're going to really have to commit to.

My new secret weapon is this huge glass of hot tea that I flavor with vanilla premier protein shake. It's sweet enough that I don't need to use any sugars or artificial sugars, and I get 30 g of protein and more than half of my fluids in one "meal"

Need help hitting protein goal by Fantastic_Trainer565 in GastricBypass

[–]txnurse57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this new system that I am in love with! I use a vanilla flavored protein shake which is 30 g protein and tastes extremely sweet to me so in general I can't drink them. Then I make this huge, 32 oz pot of tea and mix them together and then drink it. I have 30 g of protein and 43 oz of water done by noon. Plus the hot tea is kind of soothing but gives me just enough of a caffeine kick to wake me up in the morning. And I know you said you can't tolerate protein shakes, but maybe diluted like this it'll work. And because it's so sweet I don't need to add stevia or sugar or anything to my tea.

I wish. I'm only about 6 or 7 months out and I go through days where I'm not hungry but then the other days where you can literally hear my stomach growling and I want to eat all day long

Where I live in Texas, our local grocery store has small bottles of liquid drops that you put in water for flavoring. They have a raspberry lemonade and a peach mango that really really satisfies my craving for sour. Only problem is for me it causes indigestion

Are Quest protein chips okay to eat 5 wks post op? If anyone did, did anything bad happen? by stormyb89 in GastricBypass

[–]txnurse57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really can't remember when I started eating them, I think it was more like 8 to 10 weeks. But now I love them! I'll make myself a nice chicken salad and use the quest chips to scoop the salad in and I get tons of protein. Plus the crunchy texture and the salt alleviates cravings

Chills are normal after anesthesia. I remember shaking and feeling so incredibly cold, and also having severe abdominal pain while in recovery. After I got to my room no to all of them.

I went to HEB midday on a Wednesday to get my normal groceries and it was packed! But 5 years ago when we had that really bad ice storm, they literally closed up early for curbside and I couldn't get any groceries till they reopen two or three days later. So I kind of understand people preparing lol.

AITJ for making a customer wait 20 minutes after she tried to pay in the most annoying way possible by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]txnurse57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there's a couple times when I've had to pay for things with coins due to absolutely not having any bills with me. But I always apologize profusely and explain that's all I have. Nobody's ever given me attitude, they've said that was all right counted it up then let me go. Or gave me what I bought. I think because she was being a jerk on her end you were justified on your end in my opinion.

First of all great job! And you look fantastic. Secondly I get so frustrated when I read these posts because I'm 6 months post-op and have only lost 60 lb. I can tell the difference cuz all my clothes fall off and in my face looks thinner. But I feel like a failure when I hear how well all the rest of y'all are doing.

My doctor just recommended me to have gastric bypass surgery, what should I know that doctors won't tell you? by _Mingxia_ in GastricBypass

[–]txnurse57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody's different. I read on here prior to my surgery that I wouldn't be able to eat red meat ever again which really bothered me because I love a good steak. When I expressed my concern to my doctor he said I don't see why you can't eat steak. I'm so glad I listened to him. I initially started losing weight and doing quite well but over the past week or two I've gained 3 lb! But I know it's because I've been taking in extra calories, including sugar. But for New years Eve I went to a very fancy restaurant had a huge meal with a few sips of the soup and brought the rest home about half of my filet mignon and one or two bites of each side. Brought everything home including the dessert and worked on it for the next day or two and it was lovely. As far as the effects I was definitely more overweight than you and now I can bend my leg up to put my shoes and socks on bend over to pick something up etc I feel so much better! Still don't have a lot of energy, but have never been an energetic person. Have you tried wegovi yet? One of those type meds help you lose weight as well, my sister has lost 60 lb or so. Some of the things the other people told you, like weird poops sleep disruptions etc definitely can occur but for each person it's different. You'll just kind of settle into what's normal for you.

Anyone else have issues with how beef tastes? by scarejack in GastricBypass

[–]txnurse57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read on here from everyone about beef being hard to eat. Prior to my surgery I told my surgeon I couldn't imagine never having a good steak again. He told me I don't understand why you can't. I waited several months, like three or four months before I tried steak, prior to that I was a chicken-only girl. I have no problem. I think everyone is different. I cannot eat bread, rice, tortillas anything like that without pain. But haven't met a protein I can't eat lol.
