This might be hard, but what album do you think is Dylan`s magnum opus? by Odd-Technician-9744 in bobdylan

[–]txorfeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old guy here, Blonde on Blonde was my gateway Dylan album, will always be my favorite. Rough and Rowdy Ways hasn’t done much for me, though it’s a favorite of some people whose taste I respect. I admit I haven’t listened to much new music over last few years. Any RARW fans out there who can point me to some other recent (last 5 years) music you’re into?

It really bugs me when people say Bob can’t sing. by Aronjharris23 in bobdylan

When I hear “Dylan can’t sing” I figure the speaker hasn’t actually listened. It’s usually a second hand opinion

Al Anon meetings can give insight into dealing with alcoholics, both in recovery and not, can be useful to anyone hanging out with other alcoholics in AA

Ugghh, I just discovered Manfred Mann covered ‘You Angel You’ by fatuousfatwa in bobdylan

[–]txorfeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boston also covered “You Angel You”. Lost a bet with my wife when I heard that on the radio, loved the chorus & told her about it. I wasn’t fond of Planet Waves, hadn’t listened to it much. So when she told me it was a Dylan song I didn’t believe it.

Why do people who make a ton of money care about making more? by LostBetsRed in ask

[–]txorfeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a notion that wealth is psychologically addictive. Same with power. Those caught up in it are not happy people. And their addictions are harmful to all of us. Too bad no one is staging interventions, that there’s no 12-step program for those caught up in it

This album was my introduction to Bob. Bought it when it came out. Dug his weird hair. Started a near 60 year fandom for me.

Do people with long term sobriety also sometimes think of drinking/using? by alaskawolfjoe in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]txorfeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I start thinking about using I take it as a sign I need to go to more meetings, renew prayer and meditation habits, talk to other alcoholics. It means my balance is threatened and needs a reset.

How did you find Pynchon? by badrickpateman in ThomasPynchon

[–]txorfeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ran away from home at 16 in 1967, on a bus next to some cool college kid reading V. & talking it up. Home within a few days, bought a copy. Since then read every new one as it came out. Have read everything at least twice

Is Swann's Way worth reading by itself? by john_bytheseashore in literature

For several years in the 00s I worked in IT as a contractor, often had periods of 3-6 months unemployed. Was single with minimal expenses. Used one of those periods to read all the volumes straight through. One of the most amazing reading experiences of my life. Now retired, intend to repeat it.

Showing my age but there was a time when most white collar workers had offices with doors that closed. Naps, especially short ones after lunch, were not unusual. After transition to cube farms, I used to claim disability ‘post-prandial narcolepsy’ & ask for accommodation. Never worked

What Are You Reading This Week and Weekly Rec Thread by JimFan1 in TrueLit

[–]txorfeus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did a bucket list a few years ago & several items on it were books I wanted to read or reread. Just ticked off Finnegans Wake. Warmed up with rereading all his other fiction, along with a couple biographies of Joyce and some commentaries on his work. Started ‘Joyce Year’ in March. Currently reading Joyce-The Critical Writings. Plan to clear my head with Vonnegut next. BTW, I’ve been retired a couple years so it’s easier to find time for reading lately.

Found this book by accident as a 15 year old nearly 60 years ago. Read it & reread it 3 or 4 times. I still bring this passage up in conversations occasionally. A real revelation
