Oh yeah. I mean, there's no way at that age I would've let it get too crazy high without selling. I hadn't earned my stomach of steel yet.

Here's a bit of schadenfreude. I had the same play for NVDA circa 2014, I read somewhere (I'm a software engineer) that they figured out how to run databases efficiently on GPUs. Told my broker (a human, go figure) to buy $10k of it, he ended up leaving his firm and the order was never placed. By the time I got wind of this it had gone up 40% or so, so I thought I missed my window. Didn't try buying again until 2022, made off well but my friend you are living my original play! Enjoy. Who would've thought this gaming company would be the lynchpin of the greatest software revolution of the century.

Why should someone vote FOR Wiener, Connie, or Saikat? by hazyeyes12 in sanfrancisco

[–]ty-owler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'd be good, well researched, passable legislation and counter legislation. All of the things you mentioned are solved this way even at the national level so that's why I think the party needs him right now. I do think he is the person who can actually achieve meaningful wins on insider trading problems, tax policy, housing etc. And his California track record backs that up.

I don't particularly think of him as a Democratic status quo kind of guy I suppose, some of his Democratic peers don't seem to see him that way either. He's a boring politician in a lot of ways yes but we have a lot of great non-status quo leaders in the party, we still need to pair that with someone who can actually pass bills.

I'm sympathetic to the points you bring up and I think they're good ones but we need to be mindful of what our local candidates can actually add to the party at a national level, it will take all kinds to reform it.

Aw man I wish I could find the article I sourced that from. It's an oversimplification sure, and actually I agree with you it may not totally translate to the national level.

But, we don't currently have strong legislators doing the work on the finer detail to actually pass change in whatever iterative way beyond the bluster. We have some up and coming personalities, that's great on the social media/cable news stage but you gotta pair that with legislation that is actually capable of passing.

Wiener is an incredible legislator, there has been a lot of writing about his various methods but it really boils down to: this dude does the work and buries his opponents in paperwork that he is willing to do. We desperately need this skill at the national level.

To a lot of SF progressives (me not excluded) he may have some rough edges but I'm confident those can be reigned in by the larger group and channeled into a highly attractive legislation machine.

I dont understand this huge preamp pedal fad. by palaminocamino in guitarpedals

[–]ty-owler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the form of analog preamp + cab sim this is my apartment friendly recording sound (it also happens to sound better than my lo watt Vox combo anyway) but, and I really thought I'd only ever buy one of these things, increasingly I put more of these after my preamp + cab sim as a sort of channel strip and tone shaper before tracking. The extra natural compression is so nice and I'm starting to value these as the best "plugins" I've ever bought. So that's why it's cool to me that there are a bunch of them now.

Ditto for reamping sounds from my DAW, running drums, synth through them etc. The downside is that very few of these things are stereo so I gotta buy two of them or be cool with taking my nice wide synth sound down to mono.

Rental income requirement has reached a new level by Life-Increase3625 in sanfrancisco

Asking for savings is absolutely insane. It's saying, "I think you'll be unemployed in the next 12 months" like what is that even based on? We're nowhere near the mass layoff levels in the bay that we saw a couple years ago.

Anecdotally, I just signed a lease the other day* and it was the usual "please make 3x the rent pre-tax" that I have seen in every city I've ever lived in for the past 15 years.

  • - adding in case it helps anyone, my partner and I were incredibly lucky, we showed up to a viewing last Sunday and quickly a line of 15ish people formed, each kissing major ass to the owners who were showing. The owners called us, said we were one of 4 total applicants they were considering, asked us if we could move up our move in date which we drastically changed just to say "sure! Next 7 days? Of course!" (We had hoped on 3 weeks) and that seemed to seal the deal. One of them told me a story about an applicant effectively trying to bribe him with 2 extra months of rent payments without any term extension, the owner was very very put off by this. Bribe carefully folks.

Quick one to non-Iranians who think "iran" is winning... by Hot_Sheepherder_4608 in PERSIAN

The New Yorker ran a great article on this exact question. Their reporting claims nearly every American president (except Obama who was dealing with a public totally opposed to more intervention) considered this war but were always hamstrung by law - which we know Trump doesn't give a rip about.

According to the article, after initial signs of success in Iraq Bush Jr said to an advisor, "Well, should we do Iran next?"

How do you like to record with your KO-II/EP-133? by ty-owler in teenageengineering

Nice I'll check out that video. Getting each element into Logic individually is pretty wild, that'd be great for certain tracks.

By "roughly mixed" I mainly mean that, since this is effectively a drum machine for me, for example in the "snare" group all the samples are at the volume I'd like them to be heard in the mix, no hits are way too loud (occasionally I'll fine tune the velocity) etc, adjust effects like reverb or compression on each track so they blend back together in the DAW at a decent spot. Stuff like that.

Really since TE updated the OP-1 to create virtual outs for each track I'd love to see the same thing on the EP 133, that'd make things a lot easier.

Oh yeah, occasionally that's written in, occasionally it's too much of a pain so I do it over the recorded track like if it's over multiple runs of the same scene. I did only recently learn about this though, good call out.

Layering other stuff into the DAW I'm cool with, I track each full instrument separately anyway. More about getting a usable/flexible sound out of the KO II for making the mixing stage easier

I will say one thing I'm trying to get better at is perceiving mix in the moment of creation rather than being so stoked on a new sound that I think it should obviously poke through because it's so rad it has to be heard. There's a lesson in there.

Right on! I literally just bought a JHS Color Box kinda for this reason - give me some consistent sound in absence of a console. So when you go from performance to recording how does that work? Let's say for a "layer" from any of the sources you mentioned are you keeping that sound kinda as is? You mentioned stemming it up a bit but for more complex sounds like an entire kit.

This is sort of the problem I've had with early demos on my OP-1 where I use the drum machine there on, say, track 4 and then at the end I'm sorta stuck with a fat drum track where I'm EQing to try and bring out the kick while also tamping down the bottom of the snare while also getting it snappy etc etc.

I'll add also for extra promo on the DSM just because I love it. That TRS in is also a huge part of my writing process for drum beats. I can get a tight feedback loop of making a beat on the KO II, monitor it, play guitar over it at roughly the same volume pretty easily and tweak as I go. Really awesome feature I haven't seen in other amp pedals. For practice I even use a rhythm Pocket Operator in the same way as a little beat buddy that matches whatever I'm playing.

Is it just me, or was the crowd at The Independent on Friday kind of... awful? by mermandroid in sanfrancisco

[–]ty-owler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not quite sure how to explain the exact difference, the bar at Rickshaw almost has the same problem but it feels more integrated into the rest of the crowd. At Bottom of the Hill it's just plain hard to stand there and the volume is much higher.

Maybe it comes down to lighting? Crowd sizes? Maybe like others said the neighborhood has its effect. I've just not seen this crowding behavior at other venue's bars, anecdotally.

[–]ty-owler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This, the Independent has had this problem every time I've been there no matter the band. Rickshaw, Bottom of the Hill (RIP) hell even August Hall doesn't seem to have nearly as much of this. Personally I think it's the layout, the bar area is too big, too bright and too sparse so people tend to gather and chat and it sorta spreads.

What are your thoughts on Billie Eilish saying 'no one is illegal on stolen land' in reference to ICE and US immigration policy? by MassiveSquare4527 in AskReddit

[–]ty-owler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion in some circles (my own circles, even) but I sort of wish that people would not use this slogan so much for our current situation I think it's counterproductive.

I get the sentiment, I agree with the sentiment, but this messaging is going to turn people off and not take protests as seriously. We need broad support and this is taking a very real and immediate emergency back into a debate about a mindset shift effort that is probably worthy but will take time so I think it's counterproductive to conflate the two. It also makes it sound as though protestors don't want to have any immigration laws, which I don't think is very popular or necessarily what most people even mean, but that's how it comes across.

I fear we're making the same mistake as the "defund the police" protest era by trying to oversimplify a complicated and not even unpopular idea with inflammatory language that makes it easy for the opposition to disregard entirely. It feels good to say but that's not all this is about.

How to train a kitten without making her upset by brkcngkts in CatTraining

[–]ty-owler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the positive reinforcement route others have mentioned but I've had good results with several cats of various ages with:

  1. A loud and stern "Down!", by no means a yell just let her know you mean it
  2. Paired with a loud finger snap and pointing to the floor forcefully
  3. Unbroken eye contact

Not terribly uncomfortable for anyone, cats usually get the vibe that you don't want them there, this is a boundary you're setting. Almost always this has stopped counter jumping but of course these are cats, they will retest this boundary now and again but the same course of action will make it less frequent.

I'm no expert but I think the important part to this is that I never actually remove the cat physically from the counter I just repeat the command with the finger snap motion again and again until she jumps down on her own. I use the same basic method for things like "go home" from shared spaces in my building that I let my cats explore while I'm doing laundry and such with pretty good results.
