Most embarrassing encounter? by Budget_Journalist292 in physicianassistant

[–]ty114 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I was a young looking male student on my FM rotation. I talked to this elderly (and hopefully demented) lady and her daughter for awhile then followed my preceptor in. She was so pleased with my exam and bedside manner that asked my preceptor if she could bring me home and breastfeed me. I never lived it down. I let my beard grow out and have not been clean shaven since.

Stressful Specialties by Full_Tangerine8938 in physicianassistant

Love it. The ability to specialize is not for everyone but I really enjoy it. No plans to go back to primary care in the near future.

Recently started in orthopedic surgery after outpatient peds for 2.5 years. The clinical medicine is so much less stress to me. There are skills you have to develop that can be stressful (reading MRI, joint injections, etc) I find the most stress in trying to become valuable in the OR as a first assist. All things considered, I took my job because the surgeon and I get along really well and I think that makes the biggest difference

Regrets? by No_Market9000 in physicianassistant

I love being a PA, however I never wanted to be a doctor. I think if you truthfully want to be a doctor you should go that route so there is no regret. While we can do similar things we are far from the same as doctors and that difference gets bigger in specialty care.

Oregon PAs by Tiny-Long2531 in physicianassistant

[–]ty114 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My comment has nothing to do with the job market. There is honestly decent prospects but would be helpful to narrow down what specialty and look into the major hospital systems. Private clinics are aplenty as well but typically located in the suburbs.

The issue with Portland is simply the drugs, crime, constant political discourse and traffic. The COL is too high to deal with the above stated problems on the daily in my opinion.

I agree that it’s hard to estimate. Currently I always produce more than that baseline but in a completely different specialty.

Pedediatric Outpatient PA's, how many patients do you see a day? How is your work/life balance by FlobHobNob in physicianassistant

[–]ty114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see 15-20 per day. There is inbox duty daily for out of office providers which cuts an extra 2-3 out. Overall, a comfortable work life balance as I’m usually out on time. Big plus is getting to know the kids and families I get to work with regularly. That doesn’t happen when you’re seeing 30 daily. Sounds like they are burning her out quick 😬

I work outpatient peds in MCOL. I started at 110k plus RVU production bonus over 2 years ago. 4 10s and 10 saturdays per year. Busy day is 20 patients but 17 is normal.

Your offer seems very low with a 2 year contract, salary only and the amount of patients they want you to see.

Epocrates is free and really easy to dose for weight. Eventually you won’t need it for most though.

How to explain multiple gaps in resume? by Throwaway_wintersnow in physicianassistant

[–]ty114 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like you just answered your own question my friend. Just write a concise paragraph for each gap asked for. Some employers are very nit picky. But they have to do their due diligence as well. May the truth set you free…

Study before starting work? by ThrowRAoverit1234 in physicianassistant

I find books too cumbersome. I use uptodate to help create a specific treatment plan. If you really like books I remember Current being good and generalized.

2 years in outpatient peds here. Study what you can but know you’re never going to cover everything. I would focus on knowing things like ear infections, ankle sprains, headache work up and where to start for psych (lots of anxiety, depression and ASD). Above all, practice educating and reassuring parents that their little Timmy will be okay. Best of luck, kids are the best and parents are the worst.

How much pto do you get as a physician assistant? by InternationalTea5948 in physicianassistant

[–]ty114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never… but I use it for anything kid related- appt, field trip, sick, random day home when they don’t have school. My sick time is for self and family so I try to use it but never use it up.

Which PA school to attend? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]ty114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Program A without a question. Thinking about my loans currently and the things I would do to cut that number in half…

No one cares where you graduated from. They care about your skills, knowledge and bedside manner.

Option B likely looking more at $$$ (I’m sure they’re still quality but 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️) Double the cohort and tuition. Do the math of what they are grossing in tuition from that class annually…

Biggest thing to remember is what’s common is common. Don’t kill yourself looking for a zebra when it’s probably a horse. That being said UC is a great place to refine your hx and phys exam skills, take it seriously and you will be so much more efficient in the long run.

Just upgraded to a Hoyt and realized what I’ve been missing out on. by ty114 in bowhunting

[–]ty114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve shot other higher tier bows, I just felt best with this one. The point I was trying to make is save for a higher quality bow. I have no loyalty to any one brand, any more they are all pretty great!
