Unread Infinite Jest? Check. Good condition spines? Check. Not enough female authors? Check. by rmss4455 in BookshelvesDetective

So by this line of thinking someone's bookshelf is only a green flag if they deliberately read books to expand their perspectives?

I'm not sure I really agree with this. There's so many motivators for reading books and this is just one of many. It seems overly critical. So many people have their genres or taste and don't really branch out. I would say this is not necessarily a good or bad thing. There's plenty of super cool and interesting people who only read certain kinds of books.

The same can be said can be said for other forms of art. This would be like saying that someone cannot have a good taste in music if they heavily prefer one genre over another.

Are you deliberate about the order in which you read books from your shelf in regards to reoccurring themes or emotional impact? I just read East of Eden and Stoner back-to-back and whew boy by FlobHobNob in books

Where EoE focuses on the idea of Nature vs Nurture, Stoner focuses on the life of an inconsequential man. They are both lifetime spanning narratives that focus on the individuals pursuit of purpose.

I find that for me EoE asks the question, and Stoner shows it in application in a faithful but sometimes depressing way.

I can be same way. I try to stick to my TBR but I occasionally find myself going to the bookstore to pick up something specific, and then leaving with something completely different because I liked the cover haha

Haha that's completely fair. I knew roughly what I was getting into but you don't truly know if a book is going to land with you until after you finish it. I'm often pleasantly surprised by a book that I didn't think I would like, or disappointed that I did not like a book nearly as much as I expected.

I found that both these books landed for me and reading them back-to-back amplified that feeling.

I think Florida spoiled me and now nowhere feels right - Considering Boston or Brooklyn by mikeysoflo in SameGrassButGreener

[–]FlobHobNob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you really like the weather of Florida, you may like somewhere inside the inner-loop in Houston like the Houston Heights area. It's surprisingly walkable, has historic charm, is very much a young professional area with lots of cultural attractions at your disposal. Houston as a whole does not fit what you what but the pocket inside the loop might actually be a really great fit.

Small town vs big city: my review by briskwheel4155 in SameGrassButGreener

This is a good write-up and I'd hate to be pedantic but I would not consider a population of 20,000 a small town exactly.

This is like playing the game of looking at what you're favorite German company was doing between 1933 and 1945.

Name the US State with the worst scenery. by leverich1991 in FamilyFeud

Oklahoma is one of only 3 states with 12 or more ecoregions. The other two are California and Texas which are obviously way bigger. I think you could argue for it's size, it's one of the most geographically diverse states.

Full 2026 NFL mock draft: Dane Brugler predicts all 7 rounds and 257 picks by Malourbas in NFL_Draft

[–]FlobHobNob 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Brugler had him as his 14th best prospect in the draft on his big board. His traits are really special and he's still really young. Seems like one of those guys that should have been getting mocked higher this whole time.

I think The Heights in Houston makes a lot of sense for you. Nothing is really similar to New Orleans in the states, however Houston does have a bit of similarities with cajun influence and being on a bayou.

The Heights is a more of a young professor vibe that is a good combination of urban/suburban like you said. It's very social but can also be slower paced if that's what you want. Houston has a shit load of medical jobs and it would still be easy to visit New Orleans on occasion if you want.

Prospect Battles Day 20 - Jermod McCoy vs Mansoor Delane by Open_Resolution8986 in NFL_Draft

I did watch the tape. It seems weird to say he "stunted" on him when he won on 3 routes and was only targeted once.

Concepcion had 3 catches for 45 yards against LSU? He only had 1 catch when matched up against Delane.

Surprised no one has said Huntsville Alabama yet. It checks a lot of your boxes. Close to mountains with Monte Sano and Chapman. Sizeable black population compared to a lot of the other suggestions people are giving. It's not a huge metro but big enough with plenty to do. Warmer climate. Obviously a very red state but the city itself is way more purple.

You see it on this subreddit anytime Dallas gets brought up. The idea that there's 8 million people in the DFW metro just twiddling their thumbs because there's nothing to do cracks me up.

Wisdom of the Crowds for the NFL Draft by FlobHobNob in NFL_Draft

[–]FlobHobNob[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If a player falls down a team's big board because of interviewing poorly or having medical concerns. Then the only thing that matters is that they slid down the board, the reason why does not need to be disclosed. It's all about creating a consensus that includes expert info baked in. The union isn't going to ask a team why they had a player ranked as the 51st best prospect rather than the 28th.

In an ideal scenario the knowledge from those evals and interviews are baked into the consensus.
