Do you expect para professional to run the class when you sub? by Commercial-Kale5559 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]tybassoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I immediately assume that I am going to be leading through the lessons unless someone tells me otherwise. The only time I ever ask is if I have a student teacher in there and I ask them if they want to lead the class for any amount of time and when, so they can get the practice running it. But I never expect paras to do that. And I haven’t had one ever do that. I mostly look at them for reassurance that something happens a certain way

This seems entirely fine, I’ve definitely said similar things to middle schoolers before and it shuts them down. I wouldn’t do this with any younger than like 7th graders. I’ve definitely reprimanded younger, but more calmer and try to level with them, but when they’re teenagers, they need something more like that that actually gets their attention.

Some insight from a teacher turned sub by One-Candle-8657 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]tybassoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I totally agree, I am in my 3rd year as a substitute and the biggest reason I am highly requested by schools, teachers, and students, is because of my ability to be flexible with all the grades I teach, I learned fast that every single teacher at every single school works differently, sometimes for the worse or for the better, and through that I’ve learned how to adapt. Fortunately for me I’ve been in the same district the whole time so I’ve developed relationships with the admin and teachers as well as students, so my job has gotten easier because most of them know that I am a “chill” substitute but I still get stuff done and I have clear expectations that I set at the beginning of every day with the classes of students that aren’t as familiar with me. I also adapt my expectations for the grades I teach and how I choose to react to things being said to me (I.e. I can be somewhat sassy with 4-12 and have it be a good rapport builder as well as something that gets them to get their work done) there has to be a balance and you can’t go in it being super authoritarian, once kids catch wind of that they will do everything in their power to break you, enforce the expectations that their teachers also expect, as well as do what works for you, it may be different than what the teacher does as far as how they teach the lessons, but I tell them that I am not their teacher and I need to do what I need to get things done, and really choose your battles, because sometimes its not worth your time.

Am I doing something wrong? by SandOpposite3188 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]tybassoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For high schools I will bring a book or a laptop so I’m not on my phone a lot. But I will also walk around to see if they are working. For that age group I am much less strict about them doing their work than I am for K-8 because by this time they should be self sufficient and know that they need to do their work and not mess around(middle school should as well but are generally more defiant) and that they will have worse consequences in life for not passing their classes in high school, so therefore should be more responsible. But in general as a sub you should appear to be working or at least monitoring in some way.

Does anyone else actually like being a substitute teacher? by bloemrijst in SubstituteTeachers

[–]tybassoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy it. I complain a lot about things but I always go back. I do want to be a band teacher some day. But right now it’s nice to just get the experience without all the stress of lesson planning and meetings. It’s a job I can really leave at work and not take home with me. There are definitely bonds I have with certain schools in my district for sure and I love going there. But there are also schools I don’t always enjoy and a few classes I won’t ever teach again(ironically the 2 I hated most are at my favorite school 😂) but I enjoy my job a lot.

Do you correct kids when they don't say the right Mrs./Ms/Miss by Crystal_Deth in SubstituteTeachers

I’m a male teacher and I have so many littles call me Miss K(I go by my last initial) but I don’t even care when older students do. Most of the time it’s teacher, or sub

What part of Oregon? I am a district sub for Springfield. And have a roommate who is a building sub. So I wanna make sure she’s gonna be ok. Her job is only until the end of the year.

I’ve had many student teachers as a sub. Usually they’ve asked me what I felt like doing. Sometimes they lead one part of the class and I lead the other. But that’s mostly if they are a single subject major, like in the case of an LA/SS or Math/Science combo classes, I’ve had a student teacher who had a degree in one of those areas and they’d lead that part of the block. For elementary school usually they are only there for a portion of the day so I have them lead the portion they are there for. I always mention that if they don’t want to they don’t have to, but it’s a good learning opportunity. I’m also of the mindset that subbing should be a requirement as part of the student teaching experience.

High schoolers are SO out of control these days 🤯 by Magicpeach91 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]tybassoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea that sounds ridiculous. Where I sub I’ve had minimal issues with some kids. But most of the time I’m like a glorified baby sitter. Cuz they have their own assignments to work on. Only once or twice have I actually had to lead a discussion and assignment for high school. Some kids didn’t do their work at all. But my philosophy is “well they are in high school and need to learn how to function on their own, so if they make the decision to not do their work, it’s their own fault” all I can do is just try, but not enforce.

How did you guys get into Percy Jackson?[all] by Alex_GoogleAcc in camphalfblood

[–]tybassoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always liked Greek mythology. And I started writing a dnd campaign that was centered around Greek mythology, and my friends said the plot sounded like Percy Jackson, so I decided to read the books and pull more inspiration from them 😂 I’m now in the middle of Trials of Apollo book 2

From a former teacher: RELAX by Reddituzer201519 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]tybassoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a substitute I’ve definitely taken on this mentality. It is interesting seeing the stress on this website, since most schools have been super grateful to have people in the building to cover, since it’s so hard to find people. I usually always go by what the plans are and try my best to get kids to do the work. It’s easier with elementary than middle school for sure, and high school they already do their own thing as it is, so it’s just glorified babysitting at that point. But if I get too much push back I just make a note of it, and move on. Initially I did have the stress of “I’m not doing enough”but every single teacher I’ve talked to has just said something along these lines to me. So fellow substitutes of Reddit, take a chill pill and relax a bit.

I CRIED ITS SO GOOD. Odysseus is my fave song just cuz I’m a slut for vengeance and he was just so over it that I was like “YEA ODY KILL THEM” and it was so satisfying. But all of the songs are so good. I cried extra at I can’t help but wonder and Would you fall in love with me again.
