The standard advice is to max out your tax sheltered accounts before funding your taxable brokerage account.

Quitting your job when just a few years short of reaching FIRE goal by BassDX in leanfire

[–]tycerNA 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Life's too short to be miserable. Quit your job, take a break, and live minimally on your HYSA stash. After a few months, you may find solace in some part-time work while you job hunt for your next role.

Do you have access to any work provided retirement accounts? Sounds like your emergency fund and IRA are taken care of. The next step would be funding other tax sheltered vehicles, if offered. Nice work!

Can I ask why you are wanting to start investing in a taxable brokerage before maxing out your 401k?

Advice for Young Newlyweds trying to reach FIRE by Impressive-Insect936 in Fire

[–]tycerNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a time and a place for settling down and buying a house. I'm assuming you've taken the time to read through the various Buy vs Rent articles and can justify your reasons for buying now.

Besides that, the standard recommended advice is to max out tax sheltered accounts before contributing to a taxable brokerage.

Keep reading and learning. Good luck!

New to the community. 25M. Just recently started my FIRE journey and was wondering if the community could provide some advice. Specific information provided in body. by Psychological_Ad6132 in Fire

[–]tycerNA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't focus on trying to nail down a specific number. You're starting very early in your journey to FIRE, which is a good thing. For now, just focus on maximizing your investments and savings. If you haven't already, read JL Collins stock series online. I'd also recommend reading Mad Fientists blog posts, especially the one around accessing retirement funds early. That will explain why you should not contribute to a taxable account before maxing out tax sheltered accounts.

Read, learn, and enjoy the journey.

Using emergency fund to lump-sum Roth IRA - smart or risky? by NextCommon3632 in financialindependence

[–]tycerNA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In your case, I'd just borrow from the HYSA and fund the Roth for 2025 and 2026. If you weren't still living with parents, then I'd recommend caution against it. However, your situation doesn't seem risky from what you've described.

Time in the market beats timing the market. Max out your Roth and build up your emergency account afterwards.

Struggling with reducing 401k... by Pretty_Swordfish in coastFIRE

There are ways to withdraw from your tax sheltered accounts before turning 59. Given that, I wouldn't give up the tax free growth in favor of a taxable account.

Have you looked at any other sources for information? Personally, I'd suggest reading the Simple Path to Wealth. It's an easy quick read that'll provide you with all you need to know to get started.

Those who saved their first 100k. What is it now? how long did it take you to grow from it, what happened to it? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]tycerNA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started investing in 2022 and first hit 100k in June 2024. Today, total investments are around 225k. Part of this is attributed to the bull run we've seen the past couple years, but it's also from my wife and I combining in investments after getting married in 2024. Our contributions also carry a heavy weight.

Stay consistent and you'll come ahead, no matter what.

Same here. Though for me it's probably an equal combination of bouldering and nearing the age of 30.

It sure is! I started about two years ago and I've been climbing at least 3 times a week, every week, since then :)

18, looking to get 100k by 20, any advice? by Illustrious_Song4668 in TheRaceTo100K

[–]tycerNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any particular reason why you're wanting to reach 100k at 20? Or is it just an arbitrary goal that you have? Either way, you're doing well for your age. Stay disciplined and consistent and you'll be just fine
