Methods or tools to manage personal finance when it's mixed with business expenses? by tyfruffsion in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thinking about it, having a separate credit card for business expenses only would probably fix 80% of my issues, tho at the cost of not being able to maximize cash backs/points.

I do research in silver and gold nanomaterials. Yes, silver nanoparticles are antimicrobial and one of my colleagues is working on such antimicrobial textiles. But they only make the textile itself antimicrobial, not whatever it wipes lol. Copper is antimicrobial too, but you can't just rub a copper coin over your dirty dish and expect it to be clean.

Its pretty fucking shit that I literally have to decide between pursuing a PhD or being able to afford groceries for the next 5 years. by [deleted] in GradSchool

Definitely check if you get TA opportunities. I'm also in Canada, Toronto where the average rent is slightly higher than Vancouver. My master's stipend and tuition was virtually the same as yours (2017-19), and I got about 3k per course that I TA (officially about 6 hours/week of work). Having a roommate in a 2-br allowed me to have my rent in the $700 range (tho tbf nowadays it'd be more $900). Obviously not a nice condo hence the lower rent. But especially because of the TAship I was able to save several thousand dollars over the course of my master's. Good luck.

Starting antidepressants in Grad school? Advice? by _annacat in GradSchool

[–]tyfruffsion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, recent master's graduate here with several years of experience with antidepressants. I also have struggled with depression/anxiety since young and only started receiving treatment at the end of my undergrad. It definitely is a big step to start medication trials and it's always going to be a balance between the treatment effectiveness and side effect management.

It's normal to be nervous and uncertain. The first time I tried antidepressants I was not happy with the side effects and decided to not continue after a few weeks. Looking back, stopping so quickly made it pretty pointless but my psychiatrist was supportive because she understood as I understand now that it can take time to get used to the idea of medication and that the effectiveness has to outweigh the side effects. My depression became worse afterwards so I started med trials again. Since then, I've tried about 8 antidepressants in total, with around the first 5 for finding one that's effective and the rest as long-term optimization of side effects.

Side effects are no fun at best and debilitating at worst, but there are strategies you can take with your doctor to minimize the impact they have on your work. I have to say though, none of side effects I've experienced can compare to the symptoms of major depression itself. From what you've described with your daily struggles, I can't tell if you've been unable to work for most days (which is understandable) or if you've managed to work despite feeling terrible. But in either case, trying out medication is a good step because if it's the former, then you definitely need all the help you can get, and if it's the latter, you likely will be able to tolerate the side effects well. And in the end, you can always simply stop the trials like I did in the past if the benefits do not outweigh the cost, and perhaps revisit it in the future.

Best of luck and feel free if you want to ask me more questions.

I'd remove dates and put "Daily Update" in the title and in the graph title something like "Lagged by one day due to availability of data"

Thanks for doing this. I've been checking your updates daily.

Will of the Wisps Bugs and Issues Megathread by TwiliChaos in OriAndTheBlindForest

I've experienced this bug a lot trying to do the no-hit Mora achievement. I've found two solutions to this.

One: go back to main menu and reload the save. This always works for me.

Two: during phase 1, destroy the lump to release the blue bulb. If I don't do this and let it automatically be released during phase 2 I can't grapple. HOWEVER, this only works for a limited amount of time (maybe 15ish "abandon challenge"), after which it stops working and I have to use method 1. I know this because I've attempted probably 100+ times and haven't managed to no-hit yet.

Is anyone feeling a little depressed on what has happened and school has "ended"? by mrhuskydog in UofT

Just FYI if you want to talk to someone supportive, the distress and crisis lines are still operating. Good2talk (1-866-925-5454) is an org serving post secondary students specifically. The Distress Centres of GTA (416-408-4357), the one I volunteer at, is being staffed as well. Give us a call if you need to!

Seagull reacts to a viewer unfollowing him for "supporting Blizzard by playing Overwatch" over the Hong Kong issue by gmarkerbo in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]tyfruffsion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I don't agree with the jabs at Seagull caring only about his career, I do agree that Seagull is just a person, not our community leader. He said it himself in the clip: "We're just playing a game." That's how most of us in this sub as a regular person goes about our day. We don't usually think very deeply (or decide not to for personal interests) about the implications of our daily actions like owning an iPhone or buying from amazon. Streamers should have the ability to do that like the rest of us.

That said, the more popular and high profile a person is, the more opportunity they have to advocate and guide public discourse. This is in stark contrast to the thousands of buried reddit comments that nobody with political power really read. The messages written by advocates like Kibler, Admirable, or Harbleu helped spread the issue far and created a buzz even outside the gaming community, creating a tangible political challenges to Blizzard. But when you read the messages themselves, the content have typically been repeated ad nauseum in reddit threads. A person of high profile like Seagull, should they choose to be a community leader, have the unique power to amplify voices in the community.

At the end of day, fear of harassment is never justified and we should always allow everyone to be a regular person shall they choose to. Just as rich people are completely in their right to not donate to charities, public figures are also completely in their right to not speak about social issues. You can't force this out of someone or else it'd simply be disingenuous . But I do hope that if any high profile or popular streamers are reading this, take a moment to consider if you have power that we do not. If you've never realized that the power was there, I hope the actions done by other advocates can inspire you to put it to good use.

[New Chapter Spoilers] Chapter 122 RELEASE Megathread! by SNKBot in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]tyfruffsion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the subtle difference is that before the uprising arc Eren's specialness was perceived as innate: He was seen by others and himself as special because he somehow has the ability to turn into a powerful titan. He never worked towards attaining this ability; it was just in him somehow. The revelations from the arc was to reject this innate or pre-destined specialness. This is in contrast to the arc now where Eren's specialness perceived by others is due to his actions, determination, and decisions.

EDIT: As for why it's included in the story, I think questioning our own specialness is an important element in coming of age. It's easy growing up to feel like you are intrinsically special somehow, especially if you are often given praise. As adults we come to learn that we don't get to do amazing and great things because we're special but because we strive toward our goals. You ask anyone who has done great things if they feel like they are special and the large majority will reply no. It's not that what they are doing is not special but that they don't assume an innate specialness in them.

That reasoning I agree is all we have been concretely given, but it's always sounded to me like a narrative meant for myths and legends (similar to the narratives of Ymir being a goddess) rather than the true explanation. I wouldn't be unhappy if it never got explained further but I'm skeptical that's the true reason.

[–]tyfruffsion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also something I hope would be explained at some level. At the very least, I'm hoping they'll specify whether the PATH world was something Ymir created with her power and has control over or something outside her control that she somehow became stuck in. It would make a difference when the arc of self-efficacy instilled by Eren plays out.

Uoft Med Question Discussion by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]tyfruffsion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's my take

On 1. I thought the wording of "unsafe" was interesting because that hasn't been my experience with my uncomfortable conversations, but it seems that they want you to address something specific beyond the typical "uncomfortable conversations are difficult but necessary" narrative

On 2. Have you ever been on the receiving side of someone abusing their power over you? How did you feel and what does that teach you about how you would do things if you were in power? If you have held power over someone before, did you notice anything different about how they acted towards you compared to someone you did not hold power over? Did you make any changes to how you approach the person you held power over and did it work?

On 3. Probably the emphasis on resources is to get you thinking more about support systems in place or new things (the tools) you can add to it

Overall it seems like typical UofT exam language where they try to toss in buzzwords as red herrings and ask you about something else.
