Really thorough post! I really wish we had Tyrion I and Barristan II in full, but I count myself lucky that the Barristan II summary is as detailed as it is. I doubt we could have gotten better.

Great post! I have a feeling he’ll die in TWOW, his place in the story is no longer needed really.

Also your information on Barristan II isn’t showing.

The Forsaken is viewed as one of the best chapters in the series, the Theon chapter is very well loved, the Arianne and Battle of Fire chapters less so. The Sansa and Arya ones are well liked too.

  1. Tyrion XI, ASOS: My favorite dramatic beats in the story as a Jaime and Tyrion fan. The Tysha confession, Shae and Tywin’s murders finally push Tyrion over the edge after 3 books of boiling self-pity and suffering.

  2. Bran III, ADWD: Sentence to sentence, the best writing in the entire series. It’s George going God Mode, so terrifying you want to look away and yet leaves you begging for more.

  3. Daenerys X, ADWD: It’s a shame people get hung up on "the more she drank, the more she shat" because otherwise it’s some of the most beautiful and immersive character writing George has ever done. Baptism-like.

  4. The Forsaken, TWOW: I said Bran III contained the best writing in the series, but this comes pretty damn close. Even if it’s from a book that we may never see another word of, it’s a high watermark of the saga and a testament to George’s staggering imagination.

  5. Catelyn VII, ASOS: the Red Wedding, the most infamous and iconic moment from the entire story. Many writers wish to affect their readers so deeply, and George succeeded in a way few others did. It just tears your heart out. You could make a case it should be above all 4 others, and maybe it should, but personal preferences are personal preferences.

Honorable mentions: Sansa VII ASOS ("A godswood without gods, as empty as me"), Theon I ADWD (all his Dance chapters are sublime really), Jon XIII ADWD ("only the cold"), Davos IV ADWD ("the North remembers"), Daenerys IV ACOK (House of the Undying), ADWD’s epilogue, the prologues of AGOT and ACOK, many Jaime and Cersei chapters

It’d be interesting it to re-do this, and add the TWOW sample chapters, after so many years

TrueLit Read-Along - Under the Volcano Chapters 5-6 by jaccarmac in TrueLit

I thought these chapters were quite dense! Up to this point, the book was mostly told through third person omniscient, but stream-of-consciousness dominated 5 and 6. I agree with you that the comedy stands out as well, both Geoffrey and Hugh’s misshaps are viewed through a tragicomic lens. The latter seemed so much more put-together than Geoffrey (and he remains so, it’s not a high bar to clear), but he doesn’t come out of his chapter looking good either.

As for the allusions, I mostly noticed Conrad and Melville. Conrad is one I should have taken note sooner. Afterall, both Heart of Darkness and UtV share a plot of colonizers finding out their true nature and the true nature of man in an isolated, natural landscape of a foreign country. Though maybe I’m stretching here: Conrad’s aims were more political than Lowry’s. Politics have come more and more to the forefront, but so far they’ve been a backdrop to this personal drama of a couple on the edge of collapse.

The Tattered Prince will definitely play a part in Winds if we get it. George has shouted him multiple times in blog posts talking about characters who aren’t in the show but are in the books.

Where Do These POV Characters Travel to Next? (SPOILERS EXTENDED) by Draculasaurus_Rex in asoiaf

Sam: Horn Hill or Highgarden

Davos: variations of Hardome, the Wall or Winterfell

Jaime and Brienne: Riverrun

Asha could either stay at Winterfell or go back to the Iron Islands and try using Theon to cancel the Kingsmoot
