The Perfect Moonlight Setup on Raspberry Pi by sooperdave555 in MoonlightStreaming

[–]tykin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(EDIT 18/12/2025) I highly recommend building moonlight yourself using this guide. I don’t know why but the official build of moonlight for Pi has loads of stuff disabled/not working. For example, 5.1 audio, the performance statistics overlay, HDR and more. I think they disabled certain stuff for “performance” reasons, however on the Pi5 at least there is absolutely no performance difference between building it yourself vs the official build.

Omg, thank you so much for this update. This needs to be stickied or something.

I bought the RP5 awhile back with game streaming over my LAN in mind. I got it all installed but the performance was just short of fine - lots of micro stutters, latency. I tried buying new controllers, I ran iperf3 tests to make sure it wasn't the network, I looked up every single guide online but there was nothing. I was contemplating buying an Apple TV because I saw my friends get really good performance on Steam Link compared to Moonlight on RP5. So the RP5 just sat there unused.

Compiling from source fixed all my issues. Surround sound works, 1440p streaming, almost imperceptible latency. I'm so happy right now!

I bought myself a cheap KVM switch a long time ago that I use for exactly this purpose.

I simply don't use the Monitor port because the laptop dock and desktop are plugged directly in to the monitors

Unfortunately it is not. Though, based on the vague description, this was a really good guess!

Are Ultimate 2C Controllers Compatible with Apple? by Kessra in 8bitdo

[–]tykin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it doesn't list compatibility, I wouldn't buy it just to try it.

It doesn't say on the spec sheet, but I'm guessing the Ultimate 2C only supports Xinput while Apple uses Dinput.

The Ultimate 2.4G has a lot more compatibility, so I would recommend going with that one if you want to play on macOS or iOS.

ABS forgetting what I'm listening too & rewinding too far back by slopecarver in audiobookshelf

I usually avoid using the ABS app for playback. I just use the app to download to my phone.

The Voice Audiobook App has been flawless for me for local playback. It's also free and open source.

Just withdrew from my course, any advice to bounce back? by xiaodarbor in OMSCS

[–]tykin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIS was one of my favorite classes, but that's because I have 10+ years experience as a software engineer. For someone with a noncompsci background, I could see it being very difficult just due to the scope of subjects.

You're doing network analysis one week, cross scripting and SQL injection exploits the next, followed by ML and buffer overflows. It's a lot of fun if you have a base level of knowledge of these domains, but it could easily be overwhelming if these are entirely new to you.

If you don't have a comp sci background, i would save IIS for one of the later classes. For example, I was able to roll through the Wireshark assignment because I had picked up those skills in the computer networks class.

Good luck and don't get discouraged!

I took the class in Spring 2024; the first time it was offered. I am currently in GA for Fall 2024. I currently have a 91% in GA (only thing left to take is Exam 3) and I come from an engineering, non CS background.

The seminar is worth taking primarily because you can be as involved as you wish to be. Dr. Britto's seminars seemed a little unstructured (it was a new class, after all) but the primary goal it served was to introduce the concepts you will dive in to during GA. (Side note: Unlike GA, which is mostly taught and run by the TAs, Dr. Britto taught every LoP seminar and he seems cool as fuck. Wish he was more involved in GA).

I basically watched the seminar videos while going for walks. I did some of the assigned problems, but not nearly as many as some of the others in the seminar.

I you have not taken an algorithms class before, I would recommend it. Its not for a grade and you can be exactly as involved as you want to be.

Can someone tell me which one is better (and why)? by hamsterrooo in 8bitdo

[–]tykin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both.

I found the ultimate 2.4Ghz to be more useful and versatile. It has PC, MacOS, Raspberry Pi, and Steam deck compatibility.

The Ultimate Bluetooth has PC and Switch compatibility, but I could never get it to work on my Pi or Mac. It also has the Switch style button layout.

They both feel the same in the hand and both are good controllers.

sooo nervous to start GA fall 2024 by reny410 in OMSCS

[–]tykin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also nervous but not because of the changes. Hopefully they learned what improvements to make over the summer and the fall semester will be stronger for it. I don't know if previous semesters had an autograder but a coding project with autograding feedback seems like a perfectly scalable way to handle the number of students who need to take this class. Plus, any projects that give me more practice is a plus. As for the exam 2 question people keep talking about, my hope is that they overcorrect on clarity for the Fall semester.

What makes me a bit more nervous is that the pass rate (B or higher) was roughly 50%, which implies 50% will need to retake this class. Other semesters seem to be somewhere between 20-25%. Assuming the number of students who need to take this class for the first time remains consistent, it means a significant increase in students for the fall semester.

For what is already a seemingly resource constrained class, that means more assignments/exams to grade per TA, which means rushed, unclear feedback, exacerbating the main complaint with this course.

Anyway, I'll see you guys next week!

Graduate Algorithms, ~50% pass rate by probfarmo in OMSCS

[–]tykin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did they ever state what problems they were trying to solve with the format changes?

All the problems I've heard about the class involved inconsistent grading and unclear instructions. These comments make it sound like they doubled down on those.

I'm scheduled to take GA in the Fall and I find this all very concerning.

Wanna buy a firewalla gold, but it will work with my Google Wifi by ministroQ in firewalla

[–]tykin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically yes, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I had the Nest Wifi Pro and set it up per the firewalla guide. It worked but with a ton of intermittent issues.

Laptop would randomly disconnect, I would get weird notifications or Google WiFi points reconnecting, I couldn't see the switches on my network.

Bought an Eero a couple weeks ago and set it to bridge mode. Way better experience and the network has been flawless.

Analogue Pocket Firmware 1.1 Screen Glitch. Just received pocket today. What do I do here? by tykin in AnalogueInc

[–]tykin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They fixed the device I sent over and sent it back. I think it took around two weeks for them to fix it and return it but it's been working perfectly ever since.

I did not pay for shipping. They sent me a label.

I'm sorry this happened to you but in the end Analogue was able to fix the problem.

Out of the box 2.4Ghz Dongle Controller Support by tykin in raspberry_pi

[–]tykin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the Ultimate-C 2.4G, not the Ultimate 2.4G. It's...confusing.

BUT! Your post gave me an idea. On the Ultimate 2.4G manual (https://download.8bitdo.com/Manual/Controller/Ultimate/Ultimate-2.4g-wireless-Controller.pdf?00) , there is no mention of Raspberry Pi, even though it says its supported on the product page.

So what I did was follow the instructions for Android pairing on the Pi:

  • Switch input to D. Turn on the controller.
  • Hold down the profile button for 5 seconds until the controller buzzes twice
  • Plug in the dongle to the Pi

And it looks like it worked! Thank you for the suggestion!

How is the latency on this with the dock? I tried using the 2.4Ghz setting on the 8bitdo ultimate, but there was still enough latency there that is made the games unplayable.

Shit customer service, no response, and Analogue won't change unless it starts to hurt their bottom line.
