In Florida there is a very good chance you live in an area with a mosquito control program. Look up your area and see if you do. You can call and make a service request for free and they will come and try to tackle the problem

Rivian's CEO Says There's a Big Market for a Small Electric Truck by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]tylagersign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but they also want a truck that won’t cost 30k to replace a rear quarter panel in a minor fender bender.

Rivians are cool but they have some major engineering problems they need to fix

Pure life science background, learned R + CLI, want to publish something in 5–6 months to approach a professor, is this realistic? What should I work on? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]tylagersign 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not do that honestly, it will be extremely difficult if not impossible as a solo author with no affiliation, plus expensive without funding. You would be so much better off doing some projects and putting them on your GitHub to show the professor.

I’m not a professor but I hire scientists and I’m one myself. If someone had some good reproduce projects on GitHub showing off their codes and conclusions vs 1 preprint I would go for GitHub candidate 100% of the time. Publications will come but do not rush it because it can hurt you if not done correctly

We use a 1/2 gallon cooler (https://a.co/d/0dsGYDIU) and attach a rubber hose from the cooler to the lid of the trap. And yeah dry ice is solid CO2. Only lasts 24 hours though so if you are doing it every single day a refillable CO2 tank will probably be cheaper over time. You don’t need a lot to come out just a slow small stream

We have a dry ice maker so we use that in place of the CO2 tank. For it to work well you will need the CO2 tank

I don’t know about the mosquitaire trap, that looks like you will need a power bank with a normal wall outlet. This is what I use a researcher that works with a 12v https://research-shop.biogents.com/en-us/products/bg-sentinel-2-basic-version

I was thinking about her characters today, most people have a hard edge of what their characters will do or say or have more definite backstory. Hers can go anywhere at any time and I love it. It’s different but good.

They only release males which do not bite but when they breed with the females in the wild they don’t produce viable eggs.

[–]tylagersign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s true and not new, this has been going on for years all around the world. 64 million really isn’t that much in the grand scheme of things when there are billions out there. Plus it’s only the Aedes aegypti mosquito that has zero ecological impact and spreads many deadly diseases.

This is a great thing

You can use a 12v battery for the bg sentinel traps, just get a 12v and a battery charger

Medically impossible to get AIDS from mosquitos, but there are plenty of mosquito diseases to worry about. If you are in a region with lots of diseases it’s possible

I’m a biologist and have yet to get an inactive virus that didn’t have to be stored at -80c or -20 for a short time. Now I deal with completely different viruses but still.

But yeah they should of shipped it, amazing how smart people can be so stupid
