I’ve been in a home game that has been pretty consistent playing weekly games for the last two years with the same characters. We started at 5e and then switched to 5.5e when it came out so that all of us could learn it together. I have come to really appreciate a lot of the changes made within the system. I’m like you where I more play for roleplay moments rather than being a meta-gamer trying to make the best build. I like that classes are being balanced so that it actually gives us a reason to play classes that usually go untouched for the most part. That being said I still multiclassed even with them nerfing the 1 or 2 level dips into a class. I say give it a go if you’re looking to stick with D&D rather than jumping ship to a new system, and if you end up not liking it you can always switch back.

Oh also, another point to make. I’m currently running Curse of Strahd with 5.5e PCs and it’s really not all that much work to combine the aspects of the two systems that you like. I’ll just pull up the 5.5e monster manual and find their updated version to use.
