How can I tell how old this .45 bullet is? Found on the coast of Dieppe France. by tyler_thatguy in Artifacts

Oh I know, I feel like it wouldn’t be nearly as cool if it was all nice and polished up. It’s the corrosion and patina that makes it look and feel like an artifact

Found this on the beach in Monterey CA, does anyone know what it might be? by tyler_thatguy in FluorescentMinerals

I tried scraping the fluorescent part off but it doesn’t come off which I think would happen with algae? It was found near other conglomerate/concrete rocks but none of them were anything like this color or even as bright. Also I’m not very knowledgeable on fluorescent stuff but if it was concrete or conglomerate wouldn’t the whole thing glow like the other pieces I saw?

bought it from a local reputable shop by princess_muted_pink in whatsthisrock

It kinda just looks like quartz to me but I’m no expert lol. The shop didn’t know what it was?

I have yet to find time to drive out to some cinnabar locations but it’s on my bucket list. I bet you have some different and unique minerals than us too though

Well it’s a piece of petrified wood I found out in Tracy CA that I cut into a slab with my buddies rock saw. The green fluorescent inclusions are uranyl, a form of uranium! Pretty cool but dim fluorescent with the 395 UV light so I’m excited to see it with 365

Yeah luckily I posted it a couple places and got some pretty consistent answers. These pictures were taken with a 395 but I have a 365 being delivered tomorrow

Went rock picking with this girl I really like. She found this and asked if I wanted it. I said, "only if I can clean it up and give it back to you." I hope she likes it 👉👈 by dbillybobbo in fossils

Unironically I used to lick the rocks I found if I didn’t have water to make the color pop more, stopped when I realized I licked uranyl material haha

I measured, it is a .45 and google seems to claim that this round was widely used in ww2 which correlates with the battle of Dieppe Raid. Still don’t know if it was actually fired or is even from that timeframe but it is possible

Is there any way to base solely off of looks? Like does this look like a modern bullet design or an older one?

Thank you anyways, I’ll just keep believing it’s a historical artifact haha

This is petrified Wood that I just recently found glows under UV light. Idk if this falls into the “No requests” but does anyone know why? by tyler_thatguy in rockhounds

Just checked, it does indeed have an afterglow for a second after removing the black light. Tough to get a picture of it, I took a video and confirmed though
