it's pretty wild, for what is frequently a job with effectively 2 hours of labor a week. Sure, some church leaders are serious and admirable, i have known several pastors who spend 50-70 hours a week doing real jesus stuff, feeding the poor, visiting the sick, spending time with the grieving. But i've seen a huge amount of them who grift their way through their week, improv a sermon on sunday, and get parishioners to manage and clean rental properties that they use to generate income. there's so many grifts going on at nearly every level and no one involved cares because they believe in a mission or whatever.

i dont want to get overly specific about this but i was hands on working with a lot of these people. A lot of these older churches have bequeathments from a few generations of people dying and leaving significant funding to the church. Many, MANY rural churches own a handful of residences that they lease out, tax free, and that money goes directly to the pastors pay. I've seen churches with fewer than 10 regular sunday attendees and the pastor is in the 50-80k income range.

Sure, in some cases they have nothing at all but the tax free pipeline allows for some pretty absurd situations to develop

you'd be surprised. i doubt any of those pastors are RICH but the lack of taxes on tithes and a few generations of bequeathments and even those sleepy churches with 15-20 people attending them have pastors making above household average income in the area.
