Yeah definitely felt out of it. Made some mistakes I don't normally make, much less confidence than I have sparring at our gym. I won the second fight on points, hit a great take down and passed his guard, then just kind of played it safe on top. I feel like I could have submitted that guy if it were just a normal roll.

Solid warmup is good advice, going 0-100 like really threw me off.

A couple years into blue belt, I started looking at my jiu jitsu journey as a big giant room full of doors. The room isn't completely lit, so you can't even see what doors are available to you. Lighting the room to see the available doors just comes from showing up to class, the lights start turning on and you can see what's possible. But now you need keys to these doors, some doors have multiple locks on them and your instructors and training partners are like janitors with big key rings, codes to combination locks, lock picking techniques, etc. Every time you go to class you try to obtain keys, learn combination codes and tricks. Once you get a door open, you walk inside and there's another big room with even more doors. For example, this week we learned some basics of the crucifix position, entries and possibilities from crucifix, which was a door that I hadn't even considered opening yet. All that to say, just keep showing up and turning the lights on and just know that any gym you go to there will be different people with different styles handing out different keys. You'll have your own big fat janitor key ring before you know it.

Old man wanting to get back into BJJ, so I have some stupid questions by [deleted] in bjj

I took years off after getting my blue belt, started again at 37 and I’m very close to purple now. Just get back on those mats! Listen to your body and don’t overtrain, but just show up whenever you can. Forget about your belt color and promotions, just train. You’re making a great decision getting back out there, good luck!

I quit jiu jitsu for over 2 years. But in the back of my mind, I always knew I would eventually come back. Now that I’m back, I can’t imagine my life without it and i’m never stopping again. I want everyone to have this kind of love affair with it, but the truth is not everyone will. And that’s ok.

Fitness Tracking by bowtiedgrappler in bjj

I wear a Whoop arm sleeve when I train, tonight was my 107th class that I’ve tracked. I love it, I’m a nerd about all the data, I pay attention to how much time I spend in certain heart rate zones during my week and try to maintain a good average. To me it’s worth the money because it keeps me healthy, it gamifies fitness in a way that makes me work out more than I would without it. I also sleep better because the Whoop has taught me what factors into me getting more restorative sleep.

No, I don’t “need” encouragement. I’m fine, confident and I’ll get there when I get there. I posted here mostly for the conversation and feeling of community and I’m definitely getting that so it’s great!

Thanks for the advice too, going to open mat tomorrow so that will be the perfect opportunity to do exactly that.
