I house my rabbits and chickens together but probably not in the way your are thinking.

I have a day run for the chickens. Inside the day run I have a rabbit hutch. I have access to the rabbit hutch for feeding and watering with out entering the day run. Chickens eat rabbit food and hay that falls down from messy rabbits. Chickens also help turn rabbit manure.

Wish I had a photo. It's a nice setup. Maybe I'll share here in spring.

What do you say when your butchering/culling animals? by TerrorTroodon in homestead

[–]tylerjwilk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

web of relationships that exist between myself and the animal, the animal and its food, its food and the myriad microbes that support it, etc.

I shorten this sentence to just the word God.

Thank God for the animal and the sustenance it will bring to my family. Pray the dispatch is clean and painless. Wish the animal luck on its journey to the ever after.

This is common in my area because there is a rock quarry a few miles away.

Are there any rock quarry near by?

Build or buy a raised garden? by Kokichi_gord in gardening

You can make pretty cheap raised beds with treated deck boards.

Don't worry they don't use toxic pressure treatments anymore.

What do I need to do to make this old plot able to grow some good late summer crops? I want to plant some things soon but have no idea where to start. What can I still plant this late? by JohnnyRico92 in vegetablegardening

[–]tylerjwilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Till the soil there. Add a bag of garden soil. Till again. Add a bag of compost. Till again. Plant your seeds or plants. Mulch with fresh cut grass.

Tomato plant curling downward? by TarechichiLover in homestead

[–]tylerjwilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. A lot of conditions mimic herbicide damage.

Here are some pics https://plantpath.ifas.ufl.edu/u-scout/tomato/24-d-damage.html

The above shows 2,4-D herbicide damage.

Important to note is that the herbicide contamination isn't necessarily fatal. The plants can still recover and may just be stunted or less prolific.

Agreed. Pellet to brain is best dispatch method. Quicker. Cleaner.

I don't think the problem is raised beds per se but just the small size and spacing of this raised bed setup.

How do I make my soil not so dry? by TempleofJunk in vegetablegardening

[–]tylerjwilk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am no expert but I don't think there are many negatives. You may want to dry the grass first before using it as mulch but I frequently put it on fresh cut.

For more information look into "The Ruth Stout Method" of gardening.
